What can I do with an information systems degree?

Serious answers only please.
>>

be a fag.

But cry because you'll never be half the fag he was.
>>
>>1172640
High school IT guy that everyone makes fun of.
>>
>>1172640
Literally nothing, the trade route is an IT degree, the professional route is a CS degree. You chose the vague "I got computer skills" route.
>>
>>1172640
Apparently nothing. You are good at nothing.
>>
>>1172684
>>1172681

Thank you for the useful suggestions supported by evidence.
>>
>>1172687
Evidence? Just look at any similar threads about IS. According to /g/ and /biz/ IS is completely useless degree and you have wasted your time.
>>
>>1172692

Again thank you for the useful advice.
>>
>>1172640
Don't listen to these guys, but I can't really help you as I'm a 20 yo oil worker without much knowledge in this field. Google is your best friend when it comes to shit like this, man. Or reddit, even if you like the personal feedback thing. 4chan is mostly memes and hatred
>>
>>1172699

There are sometimes well-informed discussions on here, which is why I'm posting, but it is frustrating to just get the "LOL there's no jerbs 4 u kill yourself fagt :^)" tier responses like in >>1172692
>>1172684
>>1172681
>>1172678
>>1172643

I know people that have done IS and then database administration or business analysis and made good money, but I'm willing to hear other views as long as they're useful.
>>
>>1172704
Yeah that's what I'm saying bud, Good opinions are much rarer than shitty ones on here. I think most people here are unsuccessful/ depressed or just generally shitty, so they're unlikely to help you even if they could. Like you said database admin would be the go to, sort of obvious choice, just my worthless two cents. Good luck and i give you another bump
>>
>>1172704
I'm not really related to the study, but I guess you can do a lot of things since your degree covers so much. So I would just do something you like.

If you like to code, I would look into algoritms, automation, databases or AI.
If you like business, you could go for something like analyst.
You probably could even get work as a manager or leader, because companies need people who are technical and social.
>>
>>1172640

Entry level phone tech support - up to $12.00 hourly
>>
>>1172744

Well I'm already making $30/hr and I haven't even finished the degree yet so... (OP here btw)
>>
>>1172746

Then why does this thread exist doc?
>>
>>1172640

It's a start in the IT industry. The biggest problem with IT is that it's just about turned into the haves and have nots. First five years of your career will be you being treated like shit and ragged on. Next five years will be you actually putting the shit you learned into practice and start earning some good money. Once you hit the ten year mark, you'll be doing good and getting some damn good offers for money. After that, shits starts going down hill. You'll be thought of as too old, you'll have to get into things you really don't like the idea of but it'll keep your standard of living up.
>>
>>1172747

Because I want to know what I can do with an information systems degree. I know people that have done far more with it than "entry level phone tech support" memes that you're posting, but I just wanted to get more suggestions about what's out there. What the fuck is a business analyst? What the fuck is a database administrator? What the fuck is a security consultant.
>>
>>1172751

I know that but what specific roles should I go for?

Btw I'm doing information systems not IT. IS is different from IT and I'm trying to get into IS, not IT.
>>
>>1172640

As others have stated, an IS degree is a monkey degree relative to a CS or engineering degree.

That said, it means that you should (and must) get a very high GPA. It should be *a lot* easier to get a high GPA in IS than the harder STEM majors. Once you get the high GPA, corporations and most professional schools are too stupid to realize the difference between a 3.8 in IS versus a 3.2 in engineering so you're relatively golden for jobs that don't require too much knowledge of theory.

If your IS program is similar to the one at my alma mater's, you should also be taking a lot of business classes: accounting, finance, marketing, etc. Be serious about those classes because they will give you domain knowledge that the purely technical people most likely will not have. That knowledge and the easier-to-get high GPA should be your edge over them.

I say this as a person with a bachelors and masters degree in EE and 10+ years of industry experience.
>>
You can get a data mining position somewhere. Probably around the $30-35k range.
>>
>>1172753
Are you a freshman? How can you not know what those things are?

Database administrator - At the very least, you maintain databases (Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, DB2, etc.) You will also be responsible for designing the database through indices or partitioning to optimize performance. You may be involved in actually designing database schemas to work with software being developed.

Business analyst - This is a person who can speak to non-technical people to determine what they want a system to do and translate that into a requirements document used by technical people to build a system. This is actually a rather important role especially with all the outsourcing to India nowadays. Without a good requirements document, the Indians will turn out even more rancid shit than they already do.

Security consultant - You secure the computing environment of an enterprise. This is managing the networks, the software on the workstations, and corporate IT policy. That's the most typical role. More interesting security jobs are penetration testing where you design your own tools to find and vulnerabilities in IT infrastructure. Most regular corporations will not do the more interesting work.

An IS major will most likely work as an applications developer or system administrator in a large company. I have never met an IS major in software product development although, oddly, I have met philosophy majors and people who got degrees in medieval German literature (from an elite university) or something equally strange for a software development position.

In the U.S., an IS degree should easily get a good candidate $55,000 - $65,000 starting salary.

And for genuine data mining (data scientist), the salaries can start off at $200,000/year.

An IS degree should start off at a salary comparable to what a person with an accounting or marketing degree will make. $30,000 - $35,000 is an insult.
>>
>>1172756
What do you think Information Systems is? You run reports. That's it, unless you get roped into administration and even then it's just different reports.
>>
Did Business Admin/ Info Systems. Learned database design from a course. Pretty much learned all programming on my own time.
Got a job doing database design and programming. 55-65 should be easy if you spend time learning to program.
>>
>>1173289

Isn't everything in database getting outsourced to India/the cloud these days?
>>
>>1173252

I know what those roles are - I was making a point. Given that they know that business analysts exist and make use of IS expertise, why am I getting shitposters in this thread going, "LOL there's no jobs 4 u kill yourself faget :^)" ?
>>
Glad I found this thread. I'm 19 going into the navy on an IT (Information Systems Technician)contract and was wondering what my prospects would be after my first contract was up.
>>
>>1173362

To anyone going into the technology fields, it looks to me right now that your best bet is to become a computer security specialist. This is something that would appear that companies are reluctant to outsource to India because of the high stakes and extreme damage that can occur if the company's systems get pwned.

The corporations will outsource software development and system administration since they figure they'll only lose a few million dollars, tops, while saving more than that with wages in India being less than half of U.S. wages.

Worse come to worst, you can always find work with the U.S. government, which is looking for computer security specialists for defensive and offensive purposes.
>>
>>1173253
>And for genuine data mining (data scientist), the salaries can start off at $200,000/year.

What kind of places are we talking about, anon? I'm into data science/data analytics (whatever the difference may be, more statistics than programming for me).
>>
>>1173387

Business analysts don't tend to be outsourced either as far as I know.
>>
>>1173408

Places that deal with massive data sets: Facebook, Google, medical research companies, etc.

These jobs have high salaries because they require the candidate know how to write programs, know mathematics reasonably well (statistics, probabilities, etc.), and sometimes have domain knowledge (genetic research).
>>
>>1173562

Thanks mate. I'm certainly considering to apply for Google, FB, Palantir or whatever. Medical research will be hard as I don't have the sufficient background (currently enrolled in an econometrics program).
>>
>>1173301
>I know what those roles are - I was making a point.

>complaints about shitposters
>is a shitposter himself

You already know the answer to your thread, as your pedantic replies show. Get the fuck out of here now.

No, I don’t know everything, although I know some things.
