Hey /biz/, I have about 25k that I can freely use how I want. It was always a dream of mine, and partially I always thought it would be a goldmine if I opened an arcade in Queens, NY. There are NO MORE arcades in this borough, and Forest Hills/Flushing would be prime and have people flocking to it.

The only reason arcades keep dying is because of the ludicrous prices. Who wants to pay a fucking dollar per life? I'm thinking of following the business strategy of Modern Pinball. For those that don't know:

http://www.modernpinballnyc.com/

Basically, you pay a fee to play unlimited games for a certain number of hours, rather than per play. I feel like if this is applied to a standard arcade, it would work fucking awesome.

Anyone have any thoughts? Of course the big kicker would be maintenance of the cabinets, and purchasing them in the first place. I'll probably need more capital before really getting this rolling.

Check out arcadeclub in UK...

you realize that kids can pirate games completely for free online? like, they can literally make your game, play it on flash, or just download the thing??

>There are NO MORE arcades in this borough

maybe that should tip you off there a bit?
>>

anyway, he should be looking for something that is in demand, not something that he thinks is cool. people don't make money because they made something they thought was cool, they make money because they see the demand for a product, regardless of what product that is.

How much is rent? I live in a city of 300k, and most commercial real estate is at least $10 a foot. I'd imagine NYC would be a lot more.

If you're going to have a pay per time, you're going to require a lot of cabinets, which means a lot more start up costs for them, and the space needed.

You're right about not having enough capital.

What about setting up a cafe, and then putting 4 or 5 cabinets in. You could then include game tokens in the purchase of stuff, so if you buy a $3 cup of coffee, you get a free game too. You could then also have people paying a $1 for a token.

If it takes off you could then expand with more cabinets and maybe even locations.

Just base your model on barcade (I assume you know what barcade is if you live in nyc). Just do it with modern games as well as classic.

That arcade "smiles entertainment" was fucking awesome in queens (maybe bk, it's been so long).

The only reason arcades aren't in demand anymore is because they're too expensive compared to buying consoles. It's obvious people still love socializing with the gaming communities they're a part of, the biggest example of which is the fighting game community.

Thank you anon for the suggestion to check out arcadeclub. That's exactly the kind of thing I'm thinking about over here.

>you realize that people can pirate movies for free online?
>you realize that people can go to stores and buy food and cook it at home for 1/10 of the price restaurants charge?

It's not about the actual playing of the game, it's the physical experience of doing something in a social environment you autist.

It might not have the required financial returns for most investors, but if OP has the cash the emotional return for him and any other owner can outweigh that.
>>
> 2016

let me travel to
inferior hardware
paying
to play
old games
standing up
and paying for shitty food

opportunity cost:

staying at home comfy playing games pirated or bought for less than the cost of a cab or a drink, brand fucking new, while getting a blowjob from my girlfriend while eating fantastic food I cooked myself. While playing with everyone at their home doing the same thing.

Could you think of a worse investment. I couldn't.

If you want to do something like this. Get a bunch of sweet tournament rigs. and hold weekly SPONSORED Gaming tournaments.

now, I wasn't alive at the time of arcades, but I'm guessing that the only reason people went to them was because they didn't have a gaming system at home and not because they wanted some kind of "social experience"

These days, there may be a few nostalgia fans who would go there, but eventually, they'll get pretty bored of it too considering that they can get the same (or possibly better) gaming experience at thome

Arcades are closing at a rapid pace man. The new surviving model seems to gear more towards the 'barcade' scene, in addition to the implementation of eSports. So if you have capital to risk, i'd see how you can combine both. But the cost of a liquor license, rent, etc will already be a major overhead for you. Even Ground Kontrol, this amazing 2 story barcade in Portland said it took them 5-6 years easy before they started to break even.

I've thought about starting one here, arcades are scarce, my county is scarce in terms of video game communities, but I feel i'd lose all my money quickly if I didn't have that backup capital strictly meant to piss away for the first year. >>1168892 is also right.

Yeah Barcade seems to do pretty well and I think it's a shithole compared to other arcade offerings in metro areas. I have no idea what the balance sheet would look like for these places, but Insert Coins in Vegas and Player One in Orlando were both awesome and drew a shitton of people every night. They have all consoles in a lounge with a bunch of games you can rent up front, an area for rock band, good music/sound system, big screens at the bar for super smash, etc
>>
Look up Korean, PC baangs. They are a pretty popular industry in korea. I use to go to them all the time.

it's not the 80's anymore anon...

>only reason arcades keep dying is because of the ludicrous prices

Everything in NYC is expensive. What you need to figure out is how to get people to spend their entertainment budget with you. It's not a pricing issue. It's a value issue.

Literally the opposite of what successful people usually say. "Do what you believe in and are passionate about."

Biz giving out the dead opposite advice
>>
>>1169940
Keep believing bullshit

Do something tolerable that you're good at which pays well. You'll start to enjoy it if when the money starts coming in.
>>
Are you guys for real saying that staying at home is better than going to the arcade!? WTF
its like watching porn instead of talking to girls or something
