How do I go about cold-emailing/ cold-calling employers about internship positions? I'm a mechanical engineering student.

Call them, introduce yourself. Ask if they offer any internships.
If they say they do, ask them where you could send a resume to. Thank them, and hang up.
You'll probably have a better success rate than applying online.

Would you recommend emailing them beforehand? I've heard conflicting advice on which you should do first.

Visiting in person sometimes works, depending on the place.
Obviously if it's a place with some sort of security you'd need to call ahead to visit, but hey.

What do you do when you get there?

Depending on the place, you ask if there is someone you can inquire to about internship positions or go to the HR department.
You might not be able to talk to someone or you might just get an appointment.

I typically call first, but that's because it takes less time and I'm less confident over the phone (my attempt to git gud). Also I think it's easier to ignore an email.
