Whats /biz/'s opinion on unions? 18 Year old here who has the opprotunity to join a trade union for HVAC. However, i have a 4 year tuition free scholarship. If i had to pick ,which one should i go for?
Note: im looking for a day job that pays atleast 35,000-ish a year. Im a single guy with basic hobbies and want to move out of my parents asap.

Unions are great. There are very few drawbacks.

People that argue against them don't know what they are talking about.

I don't work trades but I'm a phone salesman even though I have a BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

I'd say get unionized and start building on your work experience and estate right now. Save or invest your money. Make friends and build connections with people you could use for references.

Through the union you'll be well protected and will (hopefully) never have difficulty finding work. They will help you find work.

I have no idea what else might play into it. If you absolutely NEED certain academic certifications to really make it well in HVAC or what.

From the sounds of it though no matter which way you go you've got a good opportunity here. A good opportunity at a good life.

I'm probably just an outlier whose words should be taken with a hefty grain of salt but I say you'd be happier with cash and experience instead of a fancy wall-hanger from a fancy university.
