Play to the fads and current trends. Make an app like the Pokemon one coming out but for zombie apocalypse. Make rare/common loot spawn at random cords on earth and have people either be survivalists or bandits. with some fight mechanic.

If you look on the app store, most of the most popular ones are re-skins that cater to 40 year olds who play them on the toilet. We have adverts on the tv for a re-skin of bejewled/candy crush every year in the UK. Fuck you.
