My father did this and is very successful, granted he had a degree from Oxford University, and this was years ago. I think that the market is slightly more saturated now, but who knows.

Best advice from me is to live on as little as possible and try and save up the rest, invest it in some way (not necessarily the stock market), and then work towards a job that could pay well, whether that means retraining, or not.
