Help me out /biz/

I was holding 36 shares of $TCPI, at an average cost of $.9464, it's gone up and was at $1.02 a little while ago. So I set a stop loss at $.99... It hit $.99 and when the notifaction came up it told me the shares were sold for an average price of $.94.. The price never got that low, and that wasn't my stop loss, I've submitted a ticket, but thought I would ask the other experts while I wait for a response.
>>
>>1010601
baka desu senpai read their terms and shit you monstrous kek

all paths lead to market orders which are +/-5%
>>
>>1010601
stop loss means once the stock hits that price, your order turns into a market order and you get rid of the shares asap

stop LIMIT is what you were expecting I think.

I know it gets complicated
>>
So if I want to create my own trailing stops, I need to do Stop Limit orders?

But because I did Stop Loss I lost?
>>
>>1010611
your stop price was hit and your position became a market order sell, and thus it sold immediately at the bid price

if you had set a stop limit then it would not have sold immediately when the stop price was hit if there was nobody to buy it. then if the price keeps falling you are stuck with these shares that you are trying to sell for too high still and nobody is buying. thats the logic behind using a stop loss instead of stop limit i guess
>>

Lots of news coverage lately on opiate and heroin addiction problem in USA.

Good time to buy ELTP, who are developing anti-abuse opiate painkillers and have already filed for FDA approval. Benefit is the technology is modular, meaning anti-abuse properties can be applied to opiate painkillers already on the market.

Stock is still sitting at .40.

Oxy is anti-abuse already.
>>
>>1010891
Yep AZ got hit hard with oxy, had an immediate family member hooked on it. Dark fucking days.

Purdue pharma changed the formula to make it semi anti abusive. You could still tamper with it to get high. Even so, everyone started using black tar heroin coming from across the border.

ELTP is poised to heavily address this issue. They are working on upgrading to Nasdaq and will likely get bought out by a major player for somewhere in the high dollar range.
>>
>>1010901
Semi anti-abuse. You can still crush it up and bake it in the oven, and minutes later have a batch of synthetic heroin.

>>
>>1010931
you should set stop losses on dgaz or oil plays so you don't get burned so badly like 3-6%
>>
>>1010941
yeah i know thanks
i was lazy this morning and got busy at my job, I couldnt watch things as closely as I normally do
>>
>>1010939
there's literally like a million pieces on investing in mutiple places. go on investopedia and read EVERYTHING you'll know more than everyone here
>>
>>1010941
At what kind of % should you stop losses and also sell? Is there a rule you should abide by on limits to either side? ...What if you think it must surely turn?

>>1010945
Read - and more importantly retain - an entire encyclopedia on investing? I should point out, I have an impaired memory and a liberal arts degree.
>>
tfw sold OAS at 7.44 ;-;

post your graphs for today guys
>>
>>1010948
if you think it will surely turn and you don't have any facts to back it up then you're a retard and you shouldn't trade.

set a stop loss with whatever you're comfortable losing. I'm comfortable with losing 3-6% on a trade so I'll do the calculations real fast and set my stop loss.

for example if I buy dgaz at 23.20 I might possibly set my stop loss at 22.95 but if I came back after I took a shower and it's at 24.10 I would reset my stop loss to 23.90 to secure my profit. this is how I played a lot of runners by continually setting stop losses until it peaks.

knowing when to sell is tricky, like today after the good oil report I should have held OAS because it was obvious it was going to rally all day. i forgot my own rule and didn't set a stop loss and sold because I wanted a quick safe gain. if you're holding long term you can determine a price target that you will sell out at. if you don't you will not have that mental self control and you can become too greedy and lose a lot.

as for the last part about learning you need to realize this shit is not easy and it's going to take a long time to get good at. if you aren't willing to learn then fuck off and leave this thread.
>>
>>1010960
First off, I am willing to learn - eager in fact - but this in not my area and I know progress will be slow.

That said, my example is this: I bought something after it took a nosedive on the expectation that it would have to go back up. I bought stocks at an absolute pittance apiece. However, that pittance has gone down a further 25%. Nevertheless, I feel as though there's not much forther down for it to go. If, say, I bought at $4 and it's now down to $3, $5 is still just round the corner. Tiny fluctuations will come to be a profit. $5000 dollars' worth of almost valueless stocks will see a profit far more easily than valuable ones. Is this a foolish position?
>>
>>1010972
>$5000 dollars' worth of almost valueless stocks will see a profit far more easily than valuable ones

ehh.. you are straight up gambling right now...

those penny stocks are very volatile meaning they go way up and way down quickly. also they can fail completely and go bankrupt or whatever

youre much safer playing with bigger companies that have higher priced shares i.e. 'bluechip' stock
I mean, you KNOW mcdonalds is not gonna go bankrupt anytime soon.

Surely that's what stocks are all about nii-senpai? If they go down, just wait: they're bound to go up!

McDonalds might not go bankrupt, but you can still be waiting months before you see even the slightest increase. At that rate, aren't you better just wageslaving?
>>
What fitness based stocks are there? Is it viable to buy right now before new years? I mean once new years comes everyone will be trying to get into fitness at least for a few weeks.. Buy low now sell high in 3 weeks?
>>
>>1010939
Watch the news, wait until everyone starts to predict the apocalypse and start to panic about the stock market. That's the best time to start. Investopedia is by no means a shitty source, but it is really general. The best way to learn is to get your feet wet. Despite what some anons say, it's perfectly fine to start with some tiny amount, $100 is fine, $10 also works but better get ready to add more. And despite what I just said, you need money to make money so don't expect gains that are more than a few bucks (on the flip side, mistakes will cost you a soda or a burger) until you can get some serious cash on you. But let me reiterate. Don't worry about getting serious until you feel comfortable/constrained.

Thank you for the advice. I have about $2000-3000 - my entire savings - that I'm willing to invest. I don't want to make a huge mistake, but I also don't want to let it all moulder in a savings account. A man should stride forward, with fire under his heels.

you should honestly go talk to your banker
they will help you find a lower risk investment for your "life savings"
>>
>>1011020
You don't use your life savings trading stocks unless you want to be poor again

Listen to this guy >>1011023 or go on investopedia and read about IRAs, mutual funds, investing, personal finance, and saving.

IRA stands for individual retirement account, but the acronym should get you there.

They'll only try to "hoodwink" you into investing in their specific retirement fund in which case you say, "let me think about it." Then go home and research their funds.

This happened to me with statefarm so now I'm trying to transfer to Vanguard but it is being a bitch because the companies can't handle the transfer internally since it is a statefarm specific fund.

Stocks aren't seasonal. Those companies have been around for years and are expected to do well in certain quarters and not as well on other quarters. The season will only have a real effect if they do much better or worse than predicted (grow revenue 10% in Fall instead of 3%, grow revenue 40% in summer instead of 20%, etc).

you shouldn't even be investing right now. you have so much to learn.. you don't even know what you're doing or what it's called. just because a stock goes down does NOT mean it will go back up. Look at $NBG or $FREE. Don't catch the falling knive.

honestly not trying to be a dick, I want everyone in here to learn and be a good trader but you're one of the worst traders I've seen in here. consider plating with a smaller amount of money and doing A LOT more research

depends.

If you can't do math or bother to do research about the company then make your picks off of investor confidence from shit like stocktwits.

When a companies shares plummet, you need to first Identify if it's just the market and it's intrinsic volatility or if the stock is entering a serious longterm downtrend- If it looks like it's going to be a while before investors are in the green then it will probably drop even lower. You can probably make your money back and then some by picking up stocks when it's at a severe low point but it can take months for it to bounce back. It's all about how quickly you want a return on your investment and how the company is handling itself. If a company can't wipe it's ass properly then don't be surprised when you get shitdick from going balls deep into their shares.

>me and US STEEL right now.

right, so whats the difference between a stop loss and stop limit?

Stop loss is what you set it to to prevent yourself from losing too much money and a stop limit is what you place above the price you brought the share for, and once it goes above that and then falls back down to it it will sell, correct?
>>
>>1011633
Stops trigger when a stock hits a certain price. If it's a stop loss, it will immediately sell for the current highest price, would could be lower then the price it was triggered at if it's falling rapidly, or it could be higher if it touches the stop price but then rebounds up.

Stop limit will trigger when it reaches the stop price, and then immediately sell when it's able to at the limit price.
>>
>>1011635
What do you set to prevent yourself losing money for a stock that's falling below the price you brought in?
>>
Should you set the stop limit once it goes up, or can you just do it once you buy it?

Can someone here please talk Robinhood in to a trailing stop? PLEASE?
>>
>>1011633
not quite

stop loss and stop limit are both set below
the difference is once that stop price point is hit, a stop loss will become a market sell order at market value.
a stop limit will become a limit sell (you set a minimum price that youre willing to sell at)

what you described (sort of) is just a limit sell. you put your limit above your price and when the stock reaches that price point your shares will sell at that price
>>
>>1011637
If you absolutely want to sell if the stock touches a certain lower price, stop loss. Just be aware it could sell for even less than that price.
>>
>>1011639
Oh ok I see thanks.

I am thinking long term but the gains I made in 2 months make me want to sell. Hard to think long term when I'm checking this app several times a day. I'm just trying to get a head start on my wealth. I could probably be talked into doubling down on amd.

It's just been performing strongly for the right reasons. Their company was shaken pretty hard last summer and as a result they had to change their business strategy, Like every successful tech company from the 90s has had to do. It's not about them being better than their competitors at this price point of their stock, it's about them being better than when you bought their stock at 2 bucks- which is pretty much a sure bet.

I hate citing history when talking about the tech industry but virtually every single year amd is at it's lowest point in the holidays and skyrockets during the spring and summer. you can sell on a pop now and make profit, or double down and see what march/april has in store for you.

We'll see some shakeups until then to knock people and their stop limits out, but I am certain that it will be closer to 4 bucks than three once the big tech industry unveilings start happening in the spring.

that was the tech bubble. it happened with nearly every player in the game. If you had the balls to put your money into technology in 1995 and the knowledge to sell it at it's peak in the spring/summer of 2000 then you are a millionaire today. Every rocketship to the moon today pales in comparison to those rocketships.

Entire books could be written about why that happened and the different factors that coalesced into the ideal TO THE MOON. nobody understood what a cpu manufacturer meant to the market, or just what a big impact it could make. nobody was prepared and few people were poised.

People spend a lot of time trying to figure out what the next tech boom will be. It's pretty much the holy grail of investing.

I'm thinking about starting to "Buy the dividend", meaning, buy stocks the day before the ex-dividend date. I've read that it's a bad idea because stocks fall by the amount of the dividend on the ex-dividend date, but, from my research, that seems to generally not be true.

depends on the stock. If you're playing with a grand or less then focusing on cheaper stocks will treat you better. 80 shares that go up .50 cents each is better than 4 shares that go up two dollars each.
>how do you generally choose your stocks?
trends and investor confidence, industry movement and relevant news. In that order (reversed order is pretty much how the market itself moves)

North Central Washington Orchard owner here. I've pondered myself if any stocks pertaining to recreational or medical Marijuana would pop up; however, I know a few growers in the region that I met at the local community college. The problem is that typically the grows are groups no larger than two dozen people, and they keep to themselves in low-profile buildings or high-fenced in rural areas. Typically the product goes straight from production to store, keeping the chain small and local. I haven't heard of any large corporations dipping their hands into this lucrative business, yet. There is still 40-some odd states and a baggie-full of opportunity ahead in the future. So as always:

Well, the "standard" investment strategy, as described by an anon about a thread or so ago, is to invest in a stable company, a little bit at each time with each paycheck, and continue to reinvest your dividends into the company as well.

What a lot of people in this thread are doing is attempting to "time the market," so to speak, they're looking to buy up a lot of cheap stock and sell it quickly on an upswing to make a quick profit.

You can read the thread to get a feel for what penny stocks people are looking at, for example a popular one in the past was ASTI. There's always new stocks being looked at, a personal favorite of mine at the moment is QTM, it's had 25% growth just in the last couple days and doesn't look like it's slowing down anytime soon.
>>
>>1012924

This. This thread is mainly about position trading, Google the term. The catch is RH only let's you buy, which sucks, but the trade off is that it's free to do so.
>>
>>1012931
>only lets you buy

What do you mean by this?
>>
>>1012924
Awesome, extremely helpful.

What do you think of the strategy of looking at a thread like this.. And simply putting money into all the stocks that everyone is mentioning?
In other words, using others combined knowledge..

Or what it (hypothetically) I find someone in here like you who gives me a few companies every day?

How much money do you typically make?

Thanks again everyone

If we knew we wouldn't tell you.

However usually they will rise on big news, you can buy if a rumor appears in a message board of a big purchase order, if a stock falls 60% its likely to bounce at least 10%, or look for stocks that have fallen say 5 days straight.

Also there is always the tried and true lemming play where you buy the first stock of the day that show strength but this only works half the time. Its no fun to run into a stock that is running hot then 5 minutes into opening bell corrects and drops like 15%.

Because if you have less than 1 trillion, dollars, that "tiny commission fee" is a lot unless I plan on buying and holding only a few stocks. Lots of people are trading day in and day out on robinhood. Or if I want my portfolio to look something like, holding 50 different companies, each being sround 2.5% of my portfolio's value, there's NO way I can do this with etrade or whatever unless I'm some 1%er piece of rich gold-shitting shit. Or unless I invest in ETFs so my diversity can be obtained after a few purchases, which is what my TD ameritrade account is for anyways. Commission-free ETFs there too btw. Fuck commissions
