So I've noticed a historical price trend with FREE

Typically whatever it opens at, you can set a limit order of .003 less and that'll be the low of the day. Sometimes it goes +.001 or so lower but on average the low seems to be .003 minus the opening price if you wake up early enough to see what it is right of the bat. Gonna try this next week and see what happens.

1. Check opening price
2. Immediately set a limit order to buy shares at .003 minus the opening price.
3. Once bought, immediately set a limit sell for .001 plus the opening cost.
4. ...
5. Profit

FREE's daily numbers seems like it all works off the opening price.

Fairly dumb question time.

I know you can't short sell in robinhood yet but these seem to be the market threads right now and I'm doing this in the simulator but; when you buy and short sell the same stock I think that's called a married hedge or something. Why is this a dumb idea? Or why not? Is it because you have to pay commission or fees on the short sell or something to keep it open? I'm just trying to get through to the basics of this and need to have these basic dumb questions explained in a simple way.

Nah, I reread the FAQ.
It was the first deposit thing that threw me off. Said stuff about the first $1,000 you deposit and, paraphrasing, misread it as "$1,000 is immediately available to you."
>>
>>1006723
What does it say about the first 1k?
>>

That it's immediately available when you deposit it.
If you go over $1,000, the additional is available in a couple days.

Pretty much this. Long lasting dividend stocks always make money, because they're bigass companies that pay dividends. My personal fav, Frontier. Cheapass stock (rangebound at about $5 a share,) been paying out $0.40 a year in dividends since 2012 (down from about $0.80/year.) I hold 9780 shares (bought 20/30 at a time every pay period for years now, plus reinvesting dividends.) Next dividend will be $1025 or so into my account, another 205 shares. Next dividend (assuming it sticks at .105/sh) will pay right at 1050, another 208 shares. Just grows.

Looking for other points of view. I bought into solar city (stcy) at an average of 26.60 a share. To date its 56.91. I wasn't expecting it to grow so quickly, I was planning on it having a good first quarter. I think it'll continue to raise due to current news involving green energy. So I'm gonna hold until the first quarter, but I'm curious of how high it will climb.

BECAUSE the point of the format and thread pic is to draw new visitors browsing /biz/ to the /rgt/ thread. If it looks like a professional/reoccurring thread that people take seriously and has a pic saying something along the lines of free trading more people are likely to open/view/join the thread to see what it's all about. The way it should be formatted makes it stick out on the home page, similar to the way the /dbt/ sticks out on /o/.

tl;dr - The format isn't for people already in here, it's specifically meant to attract in new people ya dingus.

Holy shit. Using a demo account for CFD's and using leverage is some scary shit. I'm absolutely not ready for that yet.

I think if I understood currency markets better or anything where the volatility was not too high it could be very nice to expose that with the leverage but still. That is not me yet.

I need to stick to learning what the fuck I'm doing first.
>>

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask the question I came here to ask. There's lots of stuff in here that is marked as CFD (Contract for difference) and the same thing again but marked as DFT which I think stands for Daily Funded Trade. I've tried to look it up and figure out exactly what it is but I can't seem to find a simple explanation of what it is and why it's different.

Anyone able to explain it in a simple, meaningful way?

Just diversify. At any given time, my book is 1/4 blue chip, 1/4 something I've really researched and liked, 1/4 dividend, and 1/4 biotech/small cap bet. So even if the market is having a bad day, my odds of being completely in the red drop significantly. Long as there's action and I'm moving forward, even slowly, I'm satisfied.
>>
>>1008527
For the purposes of Robinhood you just trade as many times as you can and have fun. For your retirement fund investing in dividend stocks is pretty awesome. Its like getting thousands of dollars of free money every year + anything you make off the stock.

AAPL bought at its low of 90 = +25 bucks a share + all the dividends is really nice.

That little rally right at the end completely pulled me back. That wasn't even a very volatile day but that was still a wild ride. Not sure my heart, balls or underpants could sustain this with real money.

Huh that was weird too. There were a couple of things I left open. The index cfd which just kept climbing for about 15 mins after the market closed then eventually did close. I presumed that was the settlement time or whatever but then it opened again and it just kept on going up so I closed it off and realised that gain. I was just going to leave it open for shits and giggles until the next session.

And the other thing that is still ticking along is the EUR/USD cfd. How is this allowed? The markets have closed? I can in fact still buy back into the index one as well or so it seems. The fuck?
>>
>>1008820

And then its closed off again. but the currency one still ticks along.

I'll shut up now. But if anyone can explain any of this shit, please do.

PER mian Sandridge Trust, a little over 2 dollars per share, pays a dollar a year or so, but this is oil money boys, and god knows if they can keep that up with cheap prices.
Trusts are an interesting dividend paying class, say there was an apartment/commercial building owned by a trust.
Income from rents would be divided between maintenance, staff, all the opex (operating expenses and paying share holders.
There is an End of Life for most trusts, when the building is no longer serviceable for example, at that point, the land is sold and proceeds plus anything left in the bank is divided again between shareholders, stock is packed up and rolled off.

brokers push this idea as:

you open a long and short on a stock. i.e. NYSE: ABC

say the share is at $1.00 and you go long 100 shares, and short 100 shares.

the share price trends to $0.50. so you have 100 shares worth $50, and shorts worth $150.

theoretically, you are neutral, and the idea is you close the losing trade and ride the trend further.

i.e., you sell your 50 shares for $50, and wait for the price to trend to $40, then close the shorts for $160. your total cash now is $210, or 5% profit. not bad for a single trade

BUT WAIT THERES MORE

the broker will charge you a commission which is usually ~1% per trade. so actually you paid $1 to buy shares, $1 to open shorts, $1 to sell shares, and $1 to close shorts. so $210 becomes $206, which is 3% roi. more importantly, when you open the trades you are instantly $4 in the red, so if the trend only moves a little bit, you dont even make moeny. you basically pay a broker to hold a trade open for you and close it at break even/loss.

all these hybrids/weird shit futures are just bullshit. the only thing you need to do is go long and short on equities, with or without leverage. anything else is just bullshit designed to make brokers money and liquidity.

Yeah I guess it makes simple sense. You're just eating away at your own potential gains before you even start.

BIZ!!!!! My sort of rich grandfather is getting some inheritance money (750k) next year and he asked me to manage a portion of it for him and as a graduation gift. I took some finance classes back in high school and right now I am just starting accounting in Uni and he trusting me to make sound financial decisions for part of the inheritance so I will try to make a return on the money he let's me invest with.

My one personal rule to avoid draining money is to pick my personal 5 sort of risky but also profitable companies to invest in. For now I am using Robinhood but will switch to Vanguard Admiral S&P500 and TD Ameritrade when the money comes in.

Facebook, Netflix, Apple,
Amazon, Alphabet(GOOG)

But I still need advice...
Can someone help me compare which company has the best P.E and E.P.S. ratios of these companies?
Also which selection this month and next will net me the best return down the line in 6 months?

Also, keep in mind that if I choose to invest in Amazon or Alphabet I will have cash left over in a savings account. Thank you-Out
>>
Im trying to withdraw my money out and it keeps failing? why is this?

It went in just fine from the bank account.
>>
>>1009555
We're not RH customer support. Ask them. Though you should know that it takes a long while to withdraw money. One anon said it would have taken him six days to withdraw, and that RH told him it was an anti-laundering procedure. Make sure you can actually withdraw the money, too. If you just sold a stock it will take three business days for it to appear in your account.
>>
>>1009554
If you just took 100k of that... And put it in to $FTR, all of it, and left it alone... You would have:

1 $5999.99 6.00 6.00 $105999.89
2 $6359.99 6.00 6.36 $112359.89
3 $6741.59 6.00 6.74 $119101.48
4 $7146.09 6.00 7.15 $126247.57
5 $7574.85 6.00 7.57 $133822.42
6 $8029.35 6.00 8.03 $141851.77
7 $8511.11 6.00 8.51 $150362.88
8 $9021.77 6.00 9.02 $159384.65
9 $9563.08 6.00 9.56 $168947.73
10 $10136.86 6.00 10.14$179084.59

That's just in 10 years, and only investing $100k. This also assumes the DIV/YIELD for $FTR stays put, and also doesn't account if it goes up. I mean in 10 years you'd have made $80,000 just in the DIV.

Do this.
>>
>>1009559

Why? Structured trades are what literally keeps our economy moving.
>>
>>1009868

Firstly, I don't believe structured trades are what keep our economy moving.

Secondly, shortselling involves trading on predicted losses with borrowed money. So you're betting someone will lose money, and you're not using your own money to gain money. That just seems dumb.

Finally, I've never done it, so I instinctively fear it.
>>
>>1009881

But surely short selling is easier money than only going long. People are more fearful, therefore more predictable, when it comes to price movement
>>
>>1009813
Oil and natural gas prices are correlated, but there are a few differences. NG is getting beat up because it isn't cold this winter and heating/electricity is its major use. NG is harder to store and transport than crude so a drop in demand for it will affect the price more.

Small oil producers are pretty risky now. Many of them are starting to get calls from lenders. Your only hope with them is getting bought out.

Also SandRidge is currently facing some environmental regulation problems with its disposal wells.
>>
>>1009926
Thank you, sir.
>>
>>1009930
I mean if you are looking for a short term pop when oil goes up for a day or two it might work, but if you are looking long term recovery I would look at the majors or even something like CAT if you are going with a recovery in oil and other commodities.
>>
>>1009936
It was nothing like a long term thing, I was just wondering a little bit. I'm actually interested in ASTI, that was previously mentioned.

I'll keep an eye on it but I don't expect a big gain in the short term either.
>>
>>1009923
Idk, but we fossil fuels exist, so wind energy companies probably suck
>>
>>1009908
>this kind of behavior is bad
You seem to think this is somehow different than people buying based on nothing but hope.
Both are irrational behaviors.
By your logic, buying stock is bad, because it encourages others to behave irrationally by buying it too.
Or would you just not complain when that happens, because you're familiar with making money that way?

I'm thinking long term, I saw a projection saying, "It is estimated that Oklahoma will be the second largest provider of wind power by 2030" and got interested.
Oklahoma is currently 4th and most of the wind farms are in the panhandle, now it's moving Northeast as well.

Then there is Obama and dems pushing clean energy and climate change, and I honestly don't think a Republican will be the next president, so I'm thinking it's going to grow nationally too.
>>
>>1009958
But it is. One is constructive (hope). It promotes growth, progress. The other is destructive (fear). It promotes decay, failure.
>>
>>1009964
Not a chance, fossil fuels will still be #1 by a long shot hundreds of years from now, there is just no way

A few solar companies may do well, but I still think they will all be insignificant compared to fossil fuels
>>
Anyone with thoughts on $USO? $CAT?

I know fossil fuels will stay #1, but there's going to be a big push, and wind is the biggest of the renewable energies. So that's the one people should be keeping an eye on imo.

The US has one of the largest areas on earth to harvest wind as well, and it's going to be the most profitable in the future if technology catches up.
>>
>>1009967
So you would have been telling people to buy Enron, as it would be bad (destructive) to short their stock?
You should realize some companies are overvalued. You would have everyone pay greater and greater amounts with no recourse?
>>
>>1009981
We will see
>>
>>1009881
Sorry I thought you meant any form of short selling. People who post $10K and sell short $50K worth of an asset are idiots but I meant that certain industries use short selling for hedging only. I speculate using options. To me using futures or margin is just stupid for speculating.
>>
>>1009984
people can just stop buying a failing stock. There does not have to be a profit in everything.
>>
I kind of think of short selling like a boat tacking into the wind. Sometimes you just need to go that direction and that's what you need to do.
>>
>>1005572
Theres TVIX for short term and XIV for inverse short term. Dont remember the mid and long etf's at the moment. Those two are available on robinhood.
>>
>>1010015
>people can just stop buying a failing stock
lol. You should work for Wall Street.
Because everyone should take it in the ass when the market crashes?
Fuck that, I'll pass.
>>
>>1009979
I like USO. There's too much volume on it right now for a long term hold, but if you've got the capital to get in big under 10.75 or so, I don't see why not.
>>
What's the bump limit here?
>>
>>1010142
Its a pretty slow board so it usually goes well past the bump limit.
>>
>>1010164
I know, but's still good to know.
Is it 300 or 310?
>>
>>1008529
>>1006873 here again. I've made close to $10k from dividends over the course of keeping and holding it. Looking at my buy records, some shares have dropped, some have gained, but on average I'm still at 96% of my overall initial investment. At around $5 a pop, it's not terribly expensive, it's a stable company (no real long term growth, but a stable as hell dividend profile.) Why not park your money somewhere that's paying nearly 10% annually AND has maintained it's value?

We're not talking IBM or Microsoft or any of the other "barely over interest" items. We're talking $0.42/share/year at $4.60/share right now.

>>1009785
Russia's winning? The hell are you talking about? Saudi's deliberately pushing oil down and it's still pushing harder.
>>
>>1009906
Sandridge is worth a risk right now if you can throw a couple hundred or a thousand at it. It's really at the bottom, their physical assets currently balance to their stock (580 million shares, at $0.22/share? $127 million in outstanding shares, company has $130 million in holdings and no real debt.) Hell, even if you can only throw $100 at it, that's about 450 shares. Goes up $0.01/share, you've made 3 bucks. Sell, hope it slips back a penny (not hard. It's been slipping $0.015 every day, back and forth.) Do it enough, reinvest the gain, and you'll make something.

Why would I put up hundreds to make three bucks?
>>
What is /biz/'s opinion on CETC?
>>
>>1010192
Why not? It's not like $100 is going to wreck you, and it's not like you can't set a stop order that says sell if it his $0.22. You're not going to watch it all day, let it make a few quick bucks and do it over again later. It's how you play penny stocks.
>>
>>1010204
I think I get what you're saying. But I'm a poorfag, I can't work like that.
I'm just playing with piss money on a free app.
>>
>>1010196
Aren't they at risk of being delisted?
>>
>>1010211
That being the case, it's even better. Little bit by little you'll make more. Hell, why start with $100? Start with $10. $10 at $0.21 a share is 47 shares. One cycle, $0.45 profit. Two more shares. Do it again. $0.48 profit. Do it again. Add another $10 when you can.

This is how long-term investors really do it. As I mentioned upthread, I'm a huge fan of Frontier and my holdings are close to $50k in it, alone. That was accumulated over years, beginning when I was a fucking phone jockey working for Time Warner Cable. Work at it, little by little, and you'll someday find yourself not being a poorfag.
>>
>>1010218
How long has it been since you were a phone jockey?
And what about SDT, it has a high dividend yield.
>>
>>1010231
And Seadrill Partners LLC (SDLP)
>>
>>1010231
That was 12-13 years ago. I'm now a director over workforce operations for another cable company (hint, we're buying TWC.)

I actually hold a few hundred shares of SDT, also WHZ, but they (like most holdings) have been kept for the dividends. WHZ has taken a beating, but STD is still pretty solid. If you're going to get into an oil trust, now's really the time to do it while prices are being pushed down by OPEC's "fuck Russia, fuck the US, and fuck fracking" policy.

SDLP I'm unfamiliar with, sorry.
