I like elves, but it's a shame they are often very poorly written.

Tolkien had glorious but doomed elves, and even OD&D had elves as a Chaotic race that loved song and dance and collecting magic items, which is kind of cool. And of course myths could have elves being anything from minor gods, mysterious protomen, paragons of civilisation living in the lands of the dead, or demonic tricksters.

I think the problem is a lot of writers have felt compelled to take elves to take elves seriously after reading Tolkien and because of that they take less risks. So elves usually end up kind of prudish and shallow.
Dwarves and orcs and whatever are usually seen as a little sillier. So writers don't feel bad about taking greater liberties and fleshing them out.

It would be nice to see more writers take thought in how they write their races. I'd like to play some games where I could be an elf without feeling jipped.
