To continue onto this, I want to be in this specific healthcare profession, but it just changed to requiring a masters degree a few years ago. I do not want to go back to college and get more debt just to be thrown out again. They advertise 100% employment but I spoke to many recent grads and that's not the case. To this day I'll still get random approaches from other companies in that space because what I worked on is still better than what they push so it's like transparently obvious how I could contribute. Getting hired onto an engineering team is basically about that: what can you contribute. You have to keep in mind basically the skeleton crew that would keep the team alive and moving forward already exists so there is never going to be a "need" for you at any company you apply to at this stage its all about what can you contribute. Which is why if you don't have work experience having a portfolio is so important. And if you do have work experience expect to be judged by that as well. If your company shipped shit product people will think you're a shit engineer.
