Man, those were the days when devs really innovated and weren't afraid of fucking up while doing so.
Now everything is a rehash of something else.
Could we say that the golden age of vidya is past us?
>>745039295
this. I was born 1980 and about this time it was overall best (except that there was no internet, but I didnt miss something)
>>745039185

I think people try new things more often these days because it's what makes you stand out and it's easy to make games now, but back then we had small groups of people joining together to form a games company and launch a product with varied input and different techniques and stuff so you ended up with lots of quirky unique shit (see: dungeon keeper etc)
That and they tended to have more money and a much longer dev cycle (10 years+). You're right, it was a golden age
>>745039677
Fuck yea, i'm gonna check out number 2 then. Commencing nostalgia mode

>>745039622
We will see return of golden age once one man can produce AAA titles, think of quantum computing and VR when you a linked to PC and can create games directly with your thoughts.
My pick would be Rogue Trooper, recently found it on Steam http://store.steampowered.com/app/7020/Rogue_Trooper/

You already do to a degree from countries like Poland who are going through what the UK did in the golden age of gaming-
Small teams of programmers coming together from various backgrounds and making something together. It's why most of the great games of late have come from Poland and Ukraine.
Granted they're still a bit on the poor side over there but that's coming along too.

This one I am torn on, to me seems cryptic as hell to figure out quests a lot of the time
>>745040544
That's what publishers are for.
Or bank loans.
A lot of great titles/companies were made while facing potential bankruptcy, never in the black and working overtime almost every day.
You can see the same happen with indie devs nowadays, and they're the only thing preventing the industry from going completely stale.

>>745040750
these old gameboy covers are pure nostalgia and childhood memories. :(
>>745040745
none of the current titles interest me, actually, only playing LoL for it's competetive aspect
looking forward to mount and blade 2, still have to finish first one (picked it up earlier this year) and the Steampunk 2022 (or whatever the title from CDPR is next) those two I will buy day 1, keep backlogging my games during sales, just recently finished fucking Bioshock (the one with sky islands) was hoping for a different ending, but great story.

GOAT
The Ancient Art of War
Probably the first real time strategy war game, way before the original Warcraft. Released on a single (ds/dd)5.25 floppy disk the game was amazing.
If there is a game Hall of Fame, this should be at the top for originality.
just the gummi ship levels from kingdom hearts 2. every time i go back to grind through that intro it's cause of how fun the gummi ships are
honestly sad this was never continued after the second game

This is precinct assault you begin inside your base you know where the action button is right? you'll need it.
each base has a hover tank generator action button.
hover tanks will seek out the enemy base, when one of your hover tanks enters the enemy base you win.
sound simple? i don't think so.
you can generate jet choppers to protect your base from the air, these base turrets are your last line of defense, any neutral turrets are up for grabs.
>>745043929

fantastic art direction
looked futuristic then, looks retrofuturistic now
Eternal Darkness for gamecube was one of the best games ive ever played story wise.
It's important to note that graphical limitations did wonders for art design. This was all unintentional, but low poly was the golden era for computer graphics and level design. All those crude shapes were oozing with atmosphere.
Nowadays it's either normie mcprotagonist or dreamworks mcandroid. And don't forget "skilled" graphic designers and their whimsical strokes that create yawn-worthy backdrops you forget as soon as you see them. Wow, a derelict ship with a dragon perched atop mast. Why I'd never.

Socom 1 and Socom 2 for ps2. First ever online console game and it was the original PUBG. It started gamebattles n then mlg
>>745035429
My nigger! This was an underappreciated but fantastic game even in its own time. I hadn't thought of it in years but I poured plenty of time into it back in the day. The online versus battles were actually pretty fun too, in addition to the excellent single player campaign.
