Either you put in some ETF and make like 5% per year on average or go for a homerun and invest in something where you could lose it all. I've done this several times in the past, usually hit 20-40% of the time. One time, took a stock from $1.50 to $32 on 6k initial investment (was the down payment for my house). I've also seen 6k go to 1k in short order, so you cant let emotions get in the way.

You need to set rules for yourself. Put in sell orders ahead of time if the price drops X% so you aren't tempted to wait it out.

I started investing in 2003 with about 3k. I used scottrade and still do to this day, but there are plenty of others with similar fees. I would use the screener (Scottrade or yahoo finance) to find stocks under $5 a share, that had negative EPS but were showing a return to profitability. I wouldn't invest in anything I didn't know the business operated. These days I like high-dividend stocks (mortgage REITs for example) and ETFs since I am already doing well and don't want to deal with the day-to-day.
