First, forget the notion of providing stability. There is no stability that one unlucky event won't smash, so instead just be mentally flexible, and never quit working toward your goals. "Stability" is a mirage. Getting canned and having to sell all your stuff and move into a trailer won't kill you, as long as you keep your mind open and get back to work, spending less than you make each month.

My wife and I have been dirt poor when we were younger, and we've had severe financial setbacks in later years. It sucked, but we made do. We ate mac n' cheese, and worked and climbed the ladder. Luckily we never wanted children -- can't help you there, but I was a very poor kid (single mom, family of 7) and poverty isn't fun, but humans are resilient if they're not on drugs, and don't give up.

Read job descriptions that you'd apply for if you got canned. Find a community college to get the minimum educational requirements, but don't spend a lot of money. Experience, and being easy to work with mean a lot more than anything else.
