No there is not a singular way to get better. There are methods.

You mean master studies and fundamentals which are two completely different things and what you're proposing is instead to copy every piece of work and plagiarize** everything created to the point you no longer need to copy.

You can look at life instead of copying your favorite artists, you can than continue to apply the things you see in real life to your work. You never HAVE to look or copy another person's piece of work to improve. If you started now for 5 years just painting from life you're going to be better than if you copied all of Bob Ross's painting in less than that time.

Seeing how others simplify form helps in some cases. A good example is when you have an area you are weak at and someone else does this particularly well.

I had a rough time with feet for a while until i saw the basic shapes some people use. Made things much easier.

Just saying, I make paintings like this because I have studied life and NOT 'copied' artists. I would not advise anyone looking to be a thoughtful and ever-evolving digital painter or artist to just copy people unless you are VERY VERY VERY early on in the learning process. Copying another artist will only help you see what decisions they are making. Studying life and adapting your way of looking at the world will help you to not only see what decisions they are making, but WHY the artist is making those decisions. Having this understanding will help you develop your own voice, and having a unique artistic voice is something that simply cannot happen if you only copy others. I really appreciate seeing people who aspire to grow and learn as artists, as nobody is 100% teacher and 0% student, but I have to say that this method of copying other artists should be reserved for artists who are pursuing it as a hobby, and don't have enough time to use any other method. But please, to artists who hope to one day become professional and viable in the industry, I want you all to see the potential you can unlock in yourselves, not the extent to which you can copy another's actions.

simply copying something is a copy of a copy. eventually, it breaks down.
sure taking inspiration from other artists if fine. you would be hard pressed to find an artist who didn't love the look and feels of some sort of influencing medium. but simply using that as your only form of reference is one source your understanding of composition, form and other aspects of illustration are going to be one trick ponies, I should know. I fell into that pit a while ago and I'm still trying to claw my way back out it a place where I can actually improve again

I may not like entity all that much, I think he is crude, and a bit of an ass... but it's hard not to admit he can be right about some things. and simply just saying "Oh I hate his guts, therefore, he must be wrong" is a fast track to becoming bitter and apathetic towards art as a whole. trust me I did that for years and im just getting over the tail end of it.

and yes that whole training planner is super fucking intense for people who don't have all day to dedicate to it....but use your damn minds and make a less intense version. that one is just for people who wanna go the whole hog and get to at entry level art position in like 1-2 years.
