That's the case with almost all albums ever. There are a couple to several GOOD songs, and then they fill up the rest of the disc or tape or whatever with lackluster songs.

It's a rare thing for a person to genuinely love a whole album. Even rarer for a band to be so good that it's widely believed a whole album is good.

And the reasonable response to this is to stop buying whole albums and just buy the good songs.

I mostly prefer albums to single songs. An album is a journey. There is a reason bands use intros and stuff: to get the listener in the mood and prepare him for what's coming.

For example I love Nazgul's De Expugnatione Elfmuth. It's not like I don't like the single songs but I guess I would be less fond of them. In Summis Montibus is simply made to be listened to after Dies Festi... Dies Festi alone gives an entirely different impression.

Also Burzum's Rundgang um die Transzendentale Säule der Singularität without context is barely more than a piece of synth music. Framed by Gebrechlichkeit I and II it is an experience that seeks it's match.

Taking songs out of albums is like quoting out of context. Yes, they still sound good, but you need the whole picture to appreciate it all.


Having said that there are albums and bands of which I only like one song. And that's okay aswell. But I feel like listening to that is a different layer of experience.

But when my cousin showed me After the Burial with their song Berzerker, I was really grateful. Had everything I loved in a metal band. Insomnium is great for that, too.
