Neo-Tokyo. 3 different short stories, came out I think a year before Akira. Wasnt a fan of the 2nd story with the clown, but the racing one with the ghosts and the scientist stories have amazing animation and really dark stories with that really dark, overwhelming buried in a big world filled with technology feel. I had forgotten about doomed megalopolis for years. If you like old stuff, check out NeoTokyo. I posted it earlier. It's got that late 80s animation style but very detailed, not sloppy. 3 short stories, the middle one is kind of weak, but they were mostly experimenting with animation styles at the time. Shitty. Mine are long gone too, I had the ones that told the stories between the generations and even sentinels. I liked the character development a lot in 2nd gen, and the villains were probably my favorite of all generations. The zentraedi were just lackeys who couldn't even repair their own equipment and the invid were just animals, more or less.the mecha in gen 2 was the absolute worst though. Hover tanks were retarded. Gen 3 had the coolest mecha for sure, the cyclone and the alpha/beta fighter were the inspiration for so many classroom doodles.

Lupin the III movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Picture James Bond mixed with Spy vs Spy. Very fun action caper movie, funny as fuck and well written. Spielberg famously watched this movie, and said it had the best car chase scene he'd ever watched at the time.

If you want to dig deeper, the first season of the manga adaptation had Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki working on the episodes, too.

From what I've read, Gainax had the budget to make a full series, and they spent all that time and money making only 6 episodes.

The quality in the writing, the animation, the backgrounds, and all the crazy styles and effects they experimented with really shows.

This was a bunch of animators playing with a pile of new digital only equipment, and figuring out what it's limits were.

They used The Pillows for the soundtrack, and the rock music is so loud in spots you almost can't hear the dialogue. It was damn awesome.

Pretty much everything Dragonball related except Super and most of GT.

My favorites of the Studio Ghibli films are Nausicaa and Grave of the Fireflies , and while they're all top-tier good, I really didn't like Whisper of the Heart as much.

There's one I can't remember the name of where it's a little robot boy in a post-apocalyptic setting where he gets his spirit from this giant tree or something. I think I was drunk when I watched it and forgot the name.
