Yeah, I reckon it is. Season two ending was so huge. season three just going back to normal on April 1st, not connected to the other episodes is kinda weird. The promise of the darkest season yet hasn't exactly happened.

Morty is getting a bit darker, but if there is no Grand revel of him being evil or something, it would pretty much confirm bad season.

I think the last episode was a turning point. As an episode it was "meh" but it was a change in tone. Abandoning the nihilism and stepping a little closer to generic sitcom territory.

For the show to go out on a good note it would need to go into territory not traversed by other shows, it was kinda thinking about doing that but then started veering into random retardness territory like Family Guy and this season has veered again into more well traveled paths.

TLDR: Show could have gone an interesting direction but it seems to be falling down the path towards mediocrity.

I usually see these issues as growing pains. Good example of this is Flight of the Conchords - you sort of blow through your planned material, then the material you had in the back of your head, and now you are looking at a whole season and multiple story arcs in your future. The creative well gets hit hard. On top of that if your show is doing well have you maybe have new contracts, your bosses want you to change your production flow, etc etc. Different writers will definitely bring in a different feel - but I'm pretty happy with it so far. I thought the whirly dirly was a throwaway episode, and the last one was a bit meh, but w/e. People who are all bitching about women writers are just being fucking stupid.

Metalocalypse was way better. I didn't watch it for the gratuitous violence, but in spite of it. The characters themselves are very entertaining. It started as a riff on black metal culture but turned into something much more.

Season 3 feels different because the culmination of character development from the prior season are having a noticeable impact on the dynamic of their interactions.

The character's are no longer two-dimension and the and their behaviours are reflecting this.

This will be the final season of Rick and Morty. The entire series is a story of a family from start to finish,unlike shows such as Family Guy, American Dad, The Simpsons, etc etc. where characters have a concrete persona and endless season of situations, Rick and Morty's characters actually develop and as Justin Roiland said in the past, there is a larger story arc that persists beyond the each episodic scenario.

Rick and Morty was always just decent TBH. The only "Holy shit" episodes for me was where they destroyed their current Earth and just fucked off to a new one, and the evil Morty one.

The series needs more episode that actually have stuff happen. Evil Morty is still around, Not Birdperson is around, etc. So far it's just been wacky adventures with the backdrop of family issues + Morty slowly becoming smarter and more assertive.

I'm hoping it's buildup for a showdown involving Evil Morty, Morty and Rick, but I'm not holding high expectations.

I cant really tell why s3 feels so strange compared to s2 + s1. It feels to me that too much is explained by the single episodes. Literally every episode is about weaknesses/strenght of the protagonists and their relation with each other. There is no world building anymore happening, the world is already revealed. You know whats going to happen. Rick&Morty + family will win, the rest of the universe just dies in explosions and crazy stuff. Add to that, some strange obsession of the writers with teenage sex stories (altough they had that already in earlier seasons). Basically either morty or summer ends up having sex at one point or another in each episode of s3, which is insanly strange for a comic.
