Get yourself a decent pump shotgun. Good for home defense, not widely restricted if it's factory stock, even if you live in commiestan.

The Mossberg Maverick is supposed to be a cut-rate 500 series with most of the good features intact. Good stopping power, legal almost anywhere, and built solid enough to be more of a danger to whatever you're pointing it at than yourself.

If you want to get into a specific sport, or you want to carry concealed, this is less than optimal, but for a first gun, you can't really go wrong with a quality shotgun or a full-size service pistol.

Or an army surplus bolt action. Lee Enfields, although rising in price, are great guns. Unfortunately, ammo for them is expensive. You could try getting a rifle that's chambered for a cheap round too so then you can practice a lot without putting a huge hole in your wallet

Well you should have said this in the OP.
I'm not really up to speed on compact handguns, but you're probably looking for a 9mm with a compact poly frame and double stack magazine. Glock makes a few models with these features, but there are others.

If you ask /k/, you'll probably get better responses. They know their shit. Also, you might want to stay away from Taurus. They have a reputation for going from gun to grenade at the worst times.

Go to a local range and rent a few guns that interest you. Buy the one that you like to fire the most and you'll maximize your satisfaction.

>>
>>743456738
How would a holstered gun help if you already have one pointed at me?
>>
>>743455858
Armor piercing doesn't mean they shoot harder or faster, the gun shoots nearly as hard as it can without blowing up every time no matter what it's shooting. Armor piercing ammo is literally harder, so it won't smash when it hits armor, and instead poke a hole and go right through.

Think steel instead of lead.

Criminals do this thing called risk assessment. You don't generally point a gun at someone who's open carrying, because even if you have an advantage you're still in a standoff with a deadly, cornered animal.

but plinking rounds will still have super low pressure.

I'm not even American and as most people in this thread have already suggested, I'm pretty sure a Glock is the go-to first gun.

Fairly cheap, reliable..

Also you can turn it sideways for Gangsta aim and that improves your accuracy by 105863%
>>
>>743457098
Getting shot with a .22 can be deadly, don't get me wrong. But a hollow point 9mm round is GUARANTEED to stop anyone in their tracks.
>>
>>743454979
I very much prefer glock trigger over other soft squishy triggers. I went with a G22 as my carry. I hardly ever carry but it's what I got. I shoot the .40 much better than 9mm for some reason. I just need to lighten the trigger on mine.
>>
>>743457442

>>
>>743456898
The FN Five seveN (yes, they're fags for stylizing it like that, fucking Belgians) fires a specialized overpressure round, the same one the P90 fires. It is louder if you're shooting the good shit. The higher muzzle velocity of the 5.7x28mm cartridge is what is supposed to make it more effective against armor than a conventional 9mm round.

>>
>>743452269
Depends on conditions, will it be your only gun?
A glock is good if you never plan to use it but what it to work if you ever do.
A 12ga shotgun is good if all you want to do is hunt and or protect your house.
An AR 15 is good if you are going to be doing more range stuff but want a defense gun too.
10-22 or similar if all you want to do is play round an do plinking.

But for me my first was a 1911 and I don't regret it.
>>
>>743457355
Lol, can you even read?
>>
>>743457424
Yes. Anything bigger than 9mm for a handgun for selfdefense is honestly a joke. You dont defend yourself against ppl in bodyarmor or armored vehicles and you dont defend yourself against people behind walls. 9mm is enough to stop everyone. Why do you retards think the police and even military forces all over the world are using 9mm handguns lf they cant stop people in stressful situations?
>>
>>743457515
The P90/PS90 is so weird. The mag, the ejection port being on the bottom, the overall look of it, the mini ACOG everybody mounts on it... I love it to death and I think it's cool that it's ambidextrous but so many things about it are unusual.

>>743457515
It's not overpressured unless it's actually overpressured.

.22WMR can penetrate body armor, too. Any small projectile with a lot of powder behind it will. .357 was designed to go through auto glass and still maintain trajectory for a fatal wound.

It's not "armor piercing," though. It's just a "hot(fast) round"
>>
>>743458017
Overpressured as in +P which literally means "over the standard pressure" or +P+ which menas "so high above standard pressure there are no arbitrary ratings"
>>
>>743452269
Kel Tec P-11 9mm. Great carry gun. Quality nigger protection.
>>
>>743457786
Glocks get the job done just fine when it comes to self/home defense. 20ga is fine for small game and better for home defense in my opinion because it's easier for women/kids to handle. AR-15 is fun to shoot, definitely good for hunting and the range. Picatinny rails are also nice. But, 5.56×45mm tends to overpenetrate, which is why I don't recommend it for home defense.
>>
>>743457786
Also, starting out with a .45 will teach new shooters to anticipate recoil and it'll throw their shot off.
>>
>>743458089
When you start dealing with +p you loose all economy that comes with a smaller round.

If you are firing +p hollow point 9mm then for the same price you could buy 30-06 and fire it out of a cut down M1 with better effect.
>>
>>743458351
I don't even know what to say to anything you just said. It's all borderline retarded.

+P comes with no "penalties" and I'd like you to describe bullet "economy" for me.

You make a round hotter, it penetrates further. Period. End of discussion.
>>
>>743457496
Both the 9x19 and .40 really come down to preferences. They are both great and essentially equal rounds. Regardless, no matter what you're using will work. You could use a .22 and that'd be a great round to use.
>>
>>743457871
It was the future of firearms in the 1990s, kind of how the CZ was the future in its time. I like the aesthetic, but it is kind of eccentric. I don't think I'd buy one unless I already had a sizable wall going on.

Also, the one thing it has going for it, the 5.7x28mm ammunition is in my opinion its fatal flaw. It's found literally nowhere in the wild, as opposed to 5.56, 9mm, and a lot of other more common bullets. Personally, I'd prefer something a bit more common so that in a worst case scenario I could trade for more ammunition.

You know FN made an experimental shotgun with a p90 style magazine? Fukkin dope.

>>
>>743458224
20ga and you start to get into a difficulty finding shells and rifles. If you are going for a shotgun get a real one and just get lighter loads in your ammo.

It all depends on your home defense scenario, it is just you gunfighting unknow with some random assassin or are you standing in a hallway with your family at your back?
I wouldn't recommend the 5.56 for home defense if you have a family but it is fine if you live alone.

Chain gun from the warthog attack plane

I get better groupings with my .45 than with my 9mm or my ar 15.

It likely isn't a one size fits all but it works for me.

Also the .45 recoil isn't that bad unless you are trying to shoot it out of some lightweight polymer garbage.
>>
>>743458504
They both cost about a dollar a round off the shelf.
Why spend the same amount of money on an inferior round?
>>
>>743458589
Who is talking about EDC?

OP is much more likely to survive a gunfight on the street my running. The only time standing your ground makes the most sense is at home. In that case you don't need to conceal shit, you just need to be able to operate under stress.
>>
>>743459253
top tier jhp 9mm +p is 50cent/round....anyone paying more is getting jewed.
>>
>>743459181
So .45 GAP Glocks are garbage in your opinion?
>>
>>743459253
BECAUSE YOU CAN'T CARRY A CHOPPED DOWN RIFLE THAT SHOOTS 6 TIMES AS HARD AND EXPECT IT TO DO THE SAME JOB??????????????????
>>
>>743459647
.45GAP is a dead round, and the corpse is rotting. Ammo is expensive, it wont kill a man any more dead than .45acp.
>>
>>743459647
Garbage as a self defense gun for a newbie. I love the .45 ACP but coming out of a light polymer gun it can scare a newbie.
>>
>>743459785
GAP isn't ACP.

Glock Automatic Pistol
Autmatic Colt Pistol

GAP shoots as hard as .45, with a slightly reinforced, shorter casing with a small pistol primer instead of large.
>>
>>743459628
I stand corrected. 9mm +p is only a bit more expensive than .45 ball ammo.

IMO those ammo types are pretty equivalent, I just prefer .45 because I can pull tighter groups with my R1 than my VP9.

Get yourself a Glock
Get yourself a Sig P320
Get yourself a Mossberg 590 SP
Get yourself an AR-15
GET YOURSELF A FUCKING SCAR

>>743459941
if you're
>lol carry a chopped down m1
then you stand COMPLETELY FUCKING RETARDED.

>>743459383
Yeah, right. Just get the >>743456948 then, right?

>what should I get for my first gun?
>chopped down M1 so you have to pay the tax on an SBR
>>
>>743459775
If .45 GAP came out before .40 S&W it would be wide that used.
>>
>>743459775
*widely used
>>
>>743452269
SIG P210
>>
>>743460053
Yep, just like if 9mm came out int he 90s we would have something better already.

Reality didn't happen that way, though, so .45GAP is hard to find and expensive just based on supply and demand. So it's a stupid round to pick, unless you're a handloader.

Your gun fires a proprietary round?

And on lucky gunner GAP is 50% more expensive than ACP...

The best round is the one you can afford to train with regularly. If you can afford defense ammo or proprietary rounds then by all means go with those.
>>
>>743460125
Not mine, I'm arguing against it for that very reason.
>The best round is the one you can afford to train with regularly. If you can afford defense ammo or proprietary rounds then by all means go with those.
This is super true. Unless you want something for a specific reason, go with 9mm/.40(preferably 9) because you can shoot more and get better faster.

>>743458847
>>743458830
>SEE THEY USE 9MM
You're responding to someone who was making a counterpoint to "lol you get shot once with 9mm, you aint shooting back foo"

If you think 9mm is a one stop shop, then by all means shoot someone who has a gun once in the chest with a single shot break action 9x19 derringer and tell me if you live.
>>
>>743460047
Don't be a cunt. No one asked for some snaky cunt to show up.

The point is you should use whatever you want for home defense as long as you can afford to train with your defense round. Fuck concealing something on your body, all that matter is how well you could use it in a defensive fight.

You pull out a beret or some crazy shit and the attackers could just shit themselves and run even after a miss. This is still a win even if it can't be depended upon.
>>
>>743460239
The man makese sense. With the way guns are used in self defense, typically with all rounds being fired before the shooter knows it even with train shooters such as law enforcement. Then yeah 9mm, more training and more rounds per mag.

Only reason I would choose .45 over 9mm is I shoot better with that gun, maybe the crisp single action is helping but all I know is that I can do better with one over the other.
>>
>>743452269
Not that pice of shit
>>
>>743460659
What's wrong with a flintlock? When you shoot, it creates a smokescreen to get away. Brilliant if you ask me.
>>
>>743454876
My first carry gun was a Springfield XD MOD 2 in 9mm. It's a 3 inch sub-compact polymer frame that holds 13 rounds in the short mag and 16 rounds in the longer mag. Great reviews and easy to field strip. I bought a Pierce mag extender for the shorter mag and it's just enough to get my pinky on the grip. But you really need to go into a gun shop and feel the grips of a bunch of different guns. It all comes down to what feels comfortable in your hand.
