Good luck, OP. I think you're going to find the drifter/homeless life much more difficult than you're imagining. But at least you're trying to think it through and you have some money to sustain you.

I'd recommend hitch-hiking to Asheville, NC. It's a beautiful small city surrounded by mountains on three sides. And it's fairly liberal with lots of dirty hippies, so people will generally be nice to you. And it's not overloaded with mean homeless people like on the west coast.

Another bonus: You can hike the Appalachian Trail, and meet lots of cool people with similar outlooks such as yourself.

Just an idea, but since you're into prepping a lot in advance. Why not find a good piece of wilderness to set up a large season-proof camp. One that you could leave for say, 4 years, then come back to and use after some spring cleaning. I've done train-hopping before. It's challenging because you've got to find the right train with open, empty box cars.

DON'T travel by being on the top of the box car. You will encounter places where tree branches or metal beams sweep just a couple feet above the box cars, and they can injure or kill you easily.

As for getting on the train, you can do it when the train slows down while they go through a town. You still have to run pretty fast but it's doable. You can also get on while they're stopped in a train yard, but that's more risky because of guards and people spotting you.
