Only 100% obscured is really gonna be noticeable, because any amount of sunlight peeking through is gonna keep the sky bright and create the sun glare we're used to.

If you compared the brightness of your surroundings directly to normal brightness, there would be a noticeable difference. But it happens gradually, and your eyes adjust, so you don't really notice the difference. Totality is the only time when the change is sudden and dramatic enough to be immediately noticeable.

Eclipses and many other astronomical events are easily predictable because we know the exact paths and speeds of celestial objects. These paths do change; the moon, for instance, is always moving farther away from us, very slowly. But that change is also predictable. All it takes is a little math. It's not like a weather forecast.

They said that during totality you could see the stars and it would be night time

>>
>>742793226
You'll know it was totality when you can safely look at the sun and see the corona perfectly silhouetting the moon. If you didn't see that, it was like 99% partial which is completely different.
>>
It was amazing over here. We got totality with almost no clouds.

Dogs started barking. Fireworks were going off somewhere. And all the night time crickets and animals that make noise at night around here were going off. Sounded like a zoo. People were going "WOOOOO" everywere.

The only regret I have is I read a bad source that said you had to look through the sunglasses to see the halo. That actually wasn't true. You couldn't see it at all through the glasses. So I spent like 10-20 seconds of totality waiting for the eclipse to appear when it was already there. Finally had the common sense to take them off and see it though.

So I walked into walgreens to buy a bottle of rum, I was greeted by this short Hispanic girl. She had a voice that sounded like anime. I asked here why the store was so empty and if everyone was watching the eclispes. She laughed, very girly and said yeah. I then asked her what she was doing after her shift, she told me nothing. I stared into her eyes and she laughed as if imtemindated by my comeon. I'm 6ft tall Btw, but we then started making out in the liquor isle. It was getting kind of hot....

Saint Louis Missouri fag here, southern part where totality hit. I walked outside about half an hour before, day was hot as fuck and bright. Sun was beginning to be covered. Watched the news coverage for a bit until totality neared. Walked outside and it was a noticeable amount darker. Almost eerie to have that type of dark with the sun out and clear skies. Looking at the sun without glasses just looks normal, I put the glasses on to see the eclipse occur. During totality, it was dark and you could look at the moon and see the light bending around it. Way cooler than I anticipated. After the moon left, visible waves of light were flooding over my porch. My expectations weren't high, but they were definitely exceeded.

It's really more like a twilight than true night time, especially since over the horizon you can still see the sky that's not under the moon's direct shadow. It's still very impressive in my opinion, and the best part to me is getting to see the sun's corona. Especially when I compare it to partial eclipse experiences I've had when you can never look at it directly, being able to take off the glasses and just look at it with my naked eyes is quite refreshing.

The movement of celestial bodies in our solar system is still highly predictable. There's always some uncertain elements and variables that can't always be accounted for, which is why the weather forecast is so complicated and often wrong. Ultimately the weather could be perfectly predicted if we knew the exact trajectory and state of every particle involved in the weather, but that would require a ridiculous amount of calculation as well as knowledge of each individual variable that we just can never realistically have, therefore it's unpredictable.

With massive bodies moving along their gravitational paths in a vacuum, however, small variables have a much smaller impact. We might not be able to account for every single particle that affects the objects in question, but we can safely assume that those effects will be so small so as not to make any noticeable difference at this scale, particularly within a human timeframe.

The majority of complexities that have resulted in the movement of celestial objects being not perfectly predictable have been accounted for at this point, even if we don't fully understand the reasons for everything involved.

Can anybody tell me what causes that blue version? There wasn't anything blue to even reflect into the lense, and the only thing I can think of that'll do that is the lense itself causing the reflection.

Unless it's a fucking planet that we couldn't see before, then FUCK

No, that's based on false assumptions. Even if we had perfectly precise measurements and accounted for every variable, we still wouldn't be able to predict those things long term. It's not a lack of information, it's that the problems are insoluble. Look up the 3 body problem.

>>
>>742794978
Well, think of it like this. The predictability is related to the information we have available at any given time. The Lyapunov time may be about 5 million, but that's projected from the present at any given time. A million years from now it will still be 5 million. It's just that you can only predict so far ahead until the uncertainty becomes a significant problem. A changing solar system isn't inherently unpredictable, we just don't have access to all of the necessary information to predict accurately beyond a certain time frame.

Well, a lack of understanding doesn't necessarily mean that there is no solution, we just haven't come up with one yet. It can be assumption to say that we'll figure everything out, but it's just as much of an assumption to say that it's impossible.

My thinking is that the universe contains all of the available information about itself. What it takes to acquire and understand that information, however, is something we don't know and may never know because of our intellectual limits and simply not having enough time. But then, maybe we will. It's like the question if there will ever be a satisfactory scientific consensus on a theory which perfectly reconciles relativity and quantum mechanics. We've come close, but there's always issues, which is how we know we've not yet seen the full picture.

My understanding is that this is one of the major hangups when it comes to the three body problem, because many classical models of gravity provide their own solutions to the problem, but they're also contrary to one another. Reconciling these theories may be necessary to solve it, or perhaps it's a different issue entirely. We don't really know. But I say, never say never.

No, the reason we can't make longer predictions isn't because we haven't measured it precisely enough. It's about the math. Except in certain degenerate cases, the n-body problems simply aren't solvable after a enough time has passed. And that's even the case when we're talking abstract physics using perfect point sources of gravity and no outside influences whatsoever.

The whole basis of quantum theory is that certain things aren't just unknown, but unknowable. That's the basis for Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, or the constant creation/destruction of particles in a perfect vacuum. The more we've learned about the universe, the more its underpinnings seem to be really random. The three body problem is just a macroscopic version.

My point isn't that it's about precision, necessarily. It's more that this isn't how the universe actually works because that's not what we observed, it's a problem in the math. But it's also an issue that stems forward from the point in time in which you're making that prediction. Like I said, if a million years from now you make a prediction using the same math, it breaks down after the same length of time (5 million years), rather than getting closer to this mysterious point in time (4 million years) in which the theories break down. That's not what's actually happening, it's just a failure of our ability to accurately predict things. Then again, compared to most things it's still quite predictable.

The point is that a million years from now there's more information to make a prediction from that we don't or can't have access to now, same with two million years from now or so on. If you make that prediction five million years from now with the same math, you're still predicting forward five million years. That's not changing our ability to predict either positively or negatively, it just stays the same. But then, perhaps improving our theories (improving our understanding of the information available to us, as opposed to just getting more information), perhaps that prediction ability is improved. Like I said, it's the math that's unstable, not the universe (I mean it is to a certain extent but not fundamentally so, that's more of an emotional response to the changes that occur in it).

Well, being unknowable is not the same as being random. But that distinction doesn't mean much for us when all we can go by at the end of the day is observation. Only time will tell how well quantum theory reflects the true nature of the universe, of course.

Sounds like you're arguing two things. I agree that we'll learn more and more about the universe, and that includes new maths and new theories that will enable us to solve new problems. But I don't agree that means we'll eventually figure everything out. There are inherent unknowns that we'll never be able to resolve, says everything from Godel's incompleteness theorem to all the insane weirdness of quantum theory. These aren't boundaries to what we know, but boundaries to what can conceivably be learned.

But we're basing those boundaries based on what we already know.

I'm not assuming that we'll know everything about everything at any point in the future. It would be cool if we did, but we'll probably never get there for a variety of reasons.

But I also feel that assuming that these walls are impenetrable and they'll always block our understand is just as short-sighted as ignoring those limitations. We should acknowledge those limitations but not get tunnel-vision about how things work based on what we currently know.

>>
>>742798128
I agree we have to keep trying, but I think we also need a push in the other direction. Because Newtonian mechanics convinced most of the world that the universe was basically an incredibly detailed clockwork, which could be fully understood if we just had enough information. And that's become the prevailing mindset. But rejecting the idea that it's a predictable, mechanistic clockwork is really essential to grasping things like the various quantum and chaos theories.

I'd say more than a few seconds though, and you'll start photo etching the back of your eye.

The first signs of damage will be headaches, and the feeling that you got something in your eye, and also sensitivity to light, as if you were just waking up in the morning.

nasa completely failed today

dude upset because they fucked up their segment, some whore crying at the eclipse, retards talking about stupid shit, not adjusting camera feeds so you could actually see the damn totality
>>
I thought it was waaaaaay too much hype about almost nothing. Yes, I was outside and in the path of totality.

hah

fuck australia
>>
Got about 93% here, used two paper plates, used 3 pairs of shades to stare directly at it. Only got slightly darker.. you could barely tell something was in front of the sun with the naked eye

The shadows.of tree leaves we're really cool, they were all little crescents. What was really cool it was cloudy and the sky cleared for the eclipse,.youd think it was some kind eclipse phenomenon that cleared the sky because it went right back to being cloudy
