Music was utterly shitty. Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, Pat fucking Benatar, shitty hair metal, shitty synth pop bands. It was awful.

Media consumption, generally, was a more-deliberate act. If you got a cable subscription and had multiple packages/companies to choose from, you actually considered them. If you wanted to watch a movie, there was the whole ritual of calling the store and seeing what they've got (or checking the newspaper to see what's out), going to the store, picking up the movie, etc etc. If you wanted an album, you wanted specifically that album because it was a more-significant time and money investment to acquire music.

I was a kid. My parents both had jobs and we were barely middle class. Little did I know I'd never be as wealthy as them when I was an adult.

I would say the most striking difference between the 80s and today is how shitty the neighborhood I lived in has become.

People were skinnier and less ideological. Driving was much easier, people drove better and cars were comfier. People were less uptight about security, ticks, mosquitoes, smoking. Adults largely stayed out of kid's lives.
