cloths would've trapped the water, making it near impossible for his body to outproduce the heat being sucked from him. the faster he made it back the colder he'd be, considering wind and speed and being on a horse. they traveled about a day on foot, and took about that long for gendry to run back.

If he was wearing layered clothing, like they should, he should be wearing furs, then leather, then cloth. The furs soak up water, which we saw, while the leather creates a barrier around most of his vitals.
