I sort of agree with you, but at the same time, that's something I always loved about the show; the mundanity of the B plot with the family, juxtaposed against the insanity of the A plot with Rick and Morty.

I kind of like how they're getting divorced and how it's affecting the kids, because as funny as the show is, the episodes that always hit a deeper emotional level were my favorites.

It's just that, to me, it seemed like the season started out with a really great episode, and the next two just couldn't keep up to it.

I hear you, but I need to disagree. The show is primarily a science fiction comedy, driven by wackiness, but on a thematic level, the show is a cosmic horror that explored existentialist and nihilist themes, using the science fiction as a device to drive the plot. It always had been, especially the episode you mentioned.

The show is hilarious and zany and incredibly insane, but under all of that, it has an incredibly depressing, or at least, emotional theme it is exploring.

If I remember correctly, Dan Harmon has actually dealt with his own issues regarding nihilism or apathy, and this comes through in his other show, Community.

While the Divorce plot does seem extremely blatant, the only real difference is that in the past, for the most part, the issues of nihilism, existentialism, life, death, and purpose of being we're explored in single episode plots, as opposed to a season wide arc.

It honestly sounds like you agree to me. The themes you mention in the first paragraph have been intrinsically tied to sci fi since certainly Lovecraft but probably before, but im not too familiar with Sci Fi history. Its the exploration of these themes (through the sci fi stuff in which they are intrinsically connected) that made the show so good, and as you said its aparent in that episode i mentioned. Then, the fact that the shows were built on an episode by episode struxture and not a season long arc made this better. You're right that scifi and nihilistic themes are often tied together, but one can exist without the other. Lovecraft was probably the biggest part of pushing those themes into modern times, but they go as far back as the written word.

My main point where I disagree with you is that I simply don't think the show has gotten worse because of the divorce plot. I will admit, it wasn't as good as I hoped, but I blame that on hype, and while those last two episodes aren't great, especially the pickle one, I am willing to believe that the plot will strengthen over the season. Many shows with story wide arcs start out slow but grow stronger.

That said, South Park has started to take that approach and it's worse for it.

Maybe I'm just hopeful, but at the same time, to the nihilist and the apathetic, an intimate relationship drive by love is one of the few things that a person can use to find a reason to on in the universe.

What better way to explore those themes than a familiar and comfortable reality falling apart, especially from the eyes of an already troubled child experiencing divorce?

The final scene of the pickle rick episode redeemed it for me.

I think the whole episode was trying to call back to the series' roots. A load of stupidity and violence against a 'peaceful' normal plot. Unfortunately it's not working well because of the forced gender balance of the writing staff. The writing room needed to stay a male dominant field because that's the way it worked best. You could get these plots and make them work. You could get in the subtle emotions and then downplay them then just suddenly drop them all onto the viewer (see s2e3) now the emotional side is far too overt and trying to offset that with some (admittedly damn cool) violence isn't working. The increase in females bringing forth the emotion and the attempts to offset it get to the point where you could get the same effect watching two TVs at the same time, one playing a romance film like the fault in our stars and the other playing an ultraviolent action movie like grindhouse.
