Go to Shibuya or Shinjuku for night life. The best "Foreign friendly" clubs in Tokyo are Ageha and Womb. Ageha is the world's biggest club but I prefer the atmosphere of Womb much more. There was also a club called "Air" but it got shut down and renamed something, feel free to Google and I'm sure you can find it.

If you speak Japanese go to the Golden Gai in Shinjuku for the coolest bar area, be prepared to pay a hefty cover charge just to sit down though. If you don't speak Japanese go to Shibuya and search for any bar called "Hub" these are a chain bar that is misled after English pubs. They have a shit ton of foreigners in them and occasionally sluts that want to fuck foreign guys.

Finally, Roppongi is probably the most famous "gaijin hunter" area but I couldn't give you any recommendations because I generally dislike foreign tourists in Japan and stay away from these hellholes.

My take is that Japan is a very passive aggressive society where, while still getting their asses nuked last century, still have a big superiority attitude. If they think you are just visiting, they are the polite and nice. As soon as they discover you are residing there an not Japanese, you are passively treated like shit. Regular routines are interrupted in the most inventive ways. Mail will be "lost", things around you will "break" and those that work with you will keep letting you know that where you come from "is so much better" than being there. Local police will detain you for anything for being a white guy.

The only break from this shit is Japanese counter-culture that loves everything American and Russian. There are massive underground scene that take years just for an invite. Lines in allies at unmarked doors will just form and people will go in with most having no idea what it is. Also, racial discrimination is legal. You can be turned down entering a bar or restaurant with the bouncer saying "No ganjin." (no white people) and there is no recourse.

Then there is the yakuza (Japanese mob) where I have no experience. I have heard stories but never walked into a Jap massage parlor where the Yaks were pimping out Korean girls.

Yeah golden gai is definitely a Japanese area. The bars are small and foreigners usually don't go there so people are very surprised to see you there. None of the bartenders or patrons there really speak Japanese so it's more difficult for non-Japanese speakers to enjoy themselves here I think.

The street is still really cool though and even if you can't speak Japanese I recommend going to snap photos of the area.

What is comes down to is that Japan had over a thousand years of isolation and getting lucky with western technology integration last century. They are to this day a feudal society with corporate titles instead of royal titles. However, advancement and politics are the same. They are just in suits instead of kimonos. Same song, different dance.

For a specific example, I was frequenting this one pastry shop that I would stop by on the way to my train into Yokohama. The sweet young girls working there were charming and polite. Their father, the store owners, took a dislike to ganjin being too regular. Suddenly my favorite coffee was "empty" when I showed, and even my favorite eclairs were not so regularly shown. At times, he suggested I "try another store" that may have what I want. It is like death of a thousand paper cuts. There are too many to list. It builds up your frustration where you feel shunned and second class. All Japs just look at each other and know "Treat this ganjin like shit." With a simple stare and bow when I'm around. It got increasingly frustrating.

It sounds shitty, because it is. I promise you, literally less than 10% of PhD grads in non-tech fields get tenure track jobs, and that number is dwindling FAST.

Also, richfuck is inaccurate. Even w/ a tenure track job you will make from 35-55k living in a decent sized city. You will literally never pay back your loans.
