Anyone here joined the Army/Navy/Marines/Air Force?

Is it worth it?
>>
I did. It was worth it.
>>
>>741212129
Nah not worth joining all of them, pick one
>>
I joined and I'm waiting to leave for basic. Worth so far, gave me 5k to sign up.
>>
>>741212286
oh god what branch? I'm Navy
A good rule of thumb is if there is a signing bonus it's dogshit
>>
>>741212286
What mos/equivalent got you the bonus?
>>
>>741212129
Pilot here. Currently flying a mission over the East China sea. The jets practically fly themselves.

AMA
>>
>>741212349
Please explain?
>>
>>741212397
What branch?
>>
>>741212410
Signing bonus means they need more bodies.
If they need more bodies it means it's undermanned. If it's undermanned it means people don't stay in because it's dogshit.
Depends on job/branch tbh

Not worth it Anon

sometimes this is true. otherwise, they cannot find enough recruits that scored 80+ on the ASVABS.

If you join and get a guaranteed job, then get out in four years you will be okay.

It's worth it if you pick something that gives you options after you leave. Do something STEM related. I know a lot of the Navy guys are really excited about the new cryptology rates. I did research as well about the nuke program and if you're capable enough and work really fucking hard you can get jobs going out of it starting at like 90-100k. You don't need a degree, and there is a whole network and forum of former nukes recruiting after you get out. But, the program is really grueling. Lots of work, lots of studying for years. It's up to you, just be smart about the rate you pick unless you intend to have a career and stay in past your first 5 years.
>>
>>741212129

There are times when it's really worth it and even necessary. Something to be proud of.

This is not one of those times.

If you go anywhere, and want a killer job afterwards, make it the NAVY or AIR FORCE. I was a submariner for 5 years, I advanced really fast in pay because no one wants submarine duty (you have to explicitly volunteer for it) and then got a six figure salary after leaving.

If you volunteer for nuclear engineering jobs, you'll make about 300k a year after you get out. Just be good at math, no criminal record and youre a shoo-in!

Submarine duty was the best thing i ever did with my life.

Currently in the army, it is what you make of it. Score high on the asvab and take a good MOS and it can really get you on track with bills, getting a car and housing. I was in a bad situation; pregnant wife, no health insurance, minimum wage job and enlisting turned everything around. My best advice is to do your research and dont listen to the naysayers because chances are they have never served or they got kicked out during TRADOC and are salty as fuck because they couldnt hack it.

I wasn't the best student in high school
>B-C average and 2.5 GPA
So I took a gap year to join the Marine Corps after some careful consideration, and it wasn't the worst thing I've done

It was hard in the beginning, but after I came out of Boot Camp I was deployed in France for about a year before coming home. Currently I am in reserve duty so I can finish College, and the Corps is helping pay for it. So here is my recommendation...

If you have no where left to go, or looking to save even more money for college then I would recomend joining a division. However it isn't something you should go through with if you've already got the means to do college. It is a big time commitment and the decision shouldn't be taken lightly. Once you're in, you're in and there is no going back

Not so much living up to standards. It's more like this- I had a lot of illusions about military life. Joined up for excitement and adventure, make a difference in the world, that kind of thing. Thought I was joining the rebel alliance or something. Turns out im a stormtrooper. I've been around the world more than once, and I've never encountered anyone that was a threat to the American way of life. I have however encountered a whole shit ton of people who were inconveniently encroaching on some companies profits. Seeing things with open eyes tells a completely different story than the one that you get off the internet. I feel like I wasted the prime years of my life for fuck all nothing. I hope I can get out before we end up getting wrapped up in North Korea

If saving thousands of dollars a month every month and extremely nice living conditions and traveling the world, as well as obtaining skills that will land you extremely well paying civilian jobs if/when you get out doesn't sound like your cup of tea then stay FAR THE FUCK away from the AF. >>
>>741214327
Interesting. What branch did you serve for?
>>
I'm gonna try and be real. And this isn't a knock to the other branches because we all make fun of eachother but I'd like if any of the Army and Marines can vouch for me. Your best bet is Navy.

Army and Marines: Usually stationed in shitty spots. If you see combat, obviously you risk your life and if you survive, you risk PTSD, etc. Plus if you're infantry, it's tough to get out and find a job without going to school. We've heard the stories, but even one of my good friends got out of the Marines in December 2016 and was infantry. He doesn't have any mental shit going on but he didn't learn anything valuable and he was generally a smart guy. Worked security at Walmart, that's about it.

Same with Army. Like I said, I'm not knocking nobody, just hear very little post-military success stories. Of course every branch has IT/Tech related rates/MOS, and those will transfer well. But the Navy doesn't have drivers and other useless shit.

Navy: usually stationed near a big city/ocean. San Diego, Jacksonville, Norfolk (shitty but you can deal), and you can get sweet orders to Italy, Spain, etc. My Marine buddy only went to Kuwait and Korea. Hated both. Also, Navy has a bunch of rates (jobs) that transfer well. Many of the aviation rates transfer well if you explore that area in the civilian world. Admin jobs take you a long way if you have school with it. And any job that allows you to get a secret clearance will set you up.

If you go Navy, stay away from MA, engineering shit, and CS. Unless you literally wanna be a police officer, engineer, or cook/chef when you get out, don't do it. That's completely irrelevant. The entire point of SCI is that it's compartmentalized. By virtue of need to know, the existence (and, hence, names) of compartments are often classified themselves.

That's the entire fucking point of something being covert.

>>
>>741212129
It's really not that much different than any other job. You have work hours, you have off hours, you have great co-workers, you have shitty co-workers. Some people in your chain of command are good people that will take care of you as long as you don't make them look bad, some are empty uniforms that will do as little as possible and let you and everyone else under them fend for themselves. There are good days where everyone is getting along, getting shit done, and just enjoying working together. There are days where everything falls apart, people lose their temper, and you go to bed angry. If you get a rate/mos/etc. that you like and can provide you civilian opportunities, you can make a lot of stuff happen for your career. You get in what you put out.

Yeoman. I enjoyed it, just got out in June. Being from New Jersey, I saw a lot of cool shit far away home. Was in Mississippi for 2 months. Not an amazing place but it's not a shit hole. Got stationed in San Diego for nearly 2 years where I deployed 7 months all over Asia and Hawaii. Greatest experience of my life. Then my ship was decommissioned so I was sent to shore duty in Jacksonville, FL. And at 20yrs old they were paying me BAH (housing money) to have my own place. So it helped me grow up. And since it was shore duty I no longer had to worry about duty on weekends and deployments. It was awesome. And the reserves are cool. A little different than what I thought. So you do your mandatory 2 days (weekend) a month, but what I didn't know is that you have to do an Annual Training for 2 weeks a year. I mean that's nothing, it's literally 2 weeks out of the year, but I had no idea. Cool thing is, you can go anywhere (not necessarily by choice) and it's paid for and it's only for 2 weeks. So if you have a family and shit, it's not like deploying for months. You might go to Hawaii for 2 weeks and help pull ships in and remove cargo, or you could go to a spot locally and just work everyday for 2 weeks.

ok, you post a picture of dolphins then.
>>
>>741216222
>Dolphins, attendants to the Poseidon, Greek god of the sea and patron deity to sailors, is sometimes referred to as the sailor's friend. They were also chosen to represent the Submarine Service because of the characteristic way in which dolphins dive and surface.
Theyre supposed to look like that faggot

I was a 13B in the Army for three years during OIF. It was totally worth it despite the fact that every day in the Army was a living hell. I got the GI Bill and didn't have to work while I had my own apartment and fucked college bitches until graduation.

if your command had access to SIPR-NET then you knew maybe 3% of what was going on
the only way you knew enough to matter was if you were in some shithole fire base with no internet access

Not being in the military at all is probably better by comparison. I'm not comparing my job to your favorite Navy rate. I'm speaking from personal experience and telling the OP that being a Navy Nuke is not as bad as some people make it out to be.

Your experience may have varied. I don't know if you're a Nuke, a CTN, or neither. Maybe through some rating gymnastics, you spent time as both. Kudos to you, and you're more than entitled to your opinion. My opinion is different.

This is a very reasonable response. And its no secret most people embelish in a negative way and make it seem worse than it was but still, no way id ever go nuke simply because ive heard enough bad things from other people and ahve seen enough other rates to place them well above it.
Also i was a OS.

You want to serve your country, and do something really worthwhile. Coast Guard.

Did six years as a nuke machinist mate, came out an E6.

Ask me shit.
>>

I did 5 years active army and 3 years Texas national guard. Having my college paid for and getting a VA home loan have been really nice. Sometimes I still wonder how things might have ended up if I went the non-military route, but I don't really have too much to complain about.

Holy shit. A recruit who went to Sand Dog? How fucking old are you?
>>
>>741216600
This.

GI Bill is fucking tits. Between that and getting some scholarships on top of it, I made like $30,000 a year getting my undergrad.

I agree. I could bit for days about how hard the work is, and how little sleep i get and so on, but honestly I love what I learn and do every day. The people are great too, some of the best ive ever known.

Not trying to suck the ghost of Rickover's dick top hard, but I dont think I'd be where I am now if i hadent gone nuke. Honestly pretty great.
