I work as a vet tech and mainly worked with pit bulls while training and all of them were very good dogs just depends on if they were socialized and treated well.

I have a beagle. He's 14, and is a cuddle machine. Even when little kids start swinging at him beating on him, he just closes his eyes and tries to hide his face from them. Any dog that is mistreated has the ability to damage a human. But a Beagle is unlikely to kill someone. An abused Chihuahua won't rip a kids arms off. A Dachshund would have a hard time tearing an adults throat out. That's not to say that other dogs can't (and will) kill people, but there's a major difference between a butter knife and a hunting knife, and I know which one I'd rather be attacked with.

I get that Pit Bull owners believe that their dogs have unique personalities/traits/loyalty/affection etc etc, but there's no shortage of dog breeds that have unique characteristics which are endearing and lovable to humans. The question I always find myself asking is why do people knowingly choose to own an animal that has been bred for fighting and killing out of the seemingly endless choice of breeds that have just as much friendliness, loyalty, playfulness, quirks and love?

I'd be much happier if Pit Bull owners would just be a bit intellectually honest and admit that they just want a "tough guy" dog. That's all. Just admit that you want a tough looking dog to either feel tough yourself or intimidate other people and I'll be happy to leave you be.
