I believe a lot of that distrust is due to the disproportionate amount of violent crime that blacks commit. Not that everyone looks at those stats, but that reality drives our perception. I've now lived in 7 countries, admittedly not a lot by travelers standards, but it's enough to have seen how people live in other places. My entire life everyone told me the same story your post does. While all that may have been true in the 1700s, even the 1800s, it stopped being true when the old world suicided itself and rebuilt itself. At this point, the US has been dropping like a stone on the quality of life index, the happiness index, and continuing to lose the high ground it once had at an increasing rate. The entire rest of the world has not sat on its hands romanticising its culture circa 1776. Most countries with constitutions written in the post-war era have better and more efficient constitutions than we do and aren't afraid to try things at the risk of making improvements or failing at them.

The thing that makes me proud to be American is that the world, even if they hate it, even if they are unaware of it, tries to do what ever they can to be America. We have shown the world what a powerhouse country can be. In less than 250 years we have achieved more than countries that have been around for thousands of years. There are still countries out there that are struggling to even keep up and even more than can't. America is like the smart kid that skews the bell curve grading scheme and instead of the other kids getting Cs they get Ds which makes everyone upset at the US for being an over achiever.

Now, the US isn't perfect. Far from it, everyone knows that, the people who live here know that. We have political problems, financial problems, infrastructure problems, and education problems; despite that, the US is the best country in the world.

Until there is a (likely very hostile) takeover and dismantling of the bipolar power structure, which has cemented itself in place legally now, I don't see how anything will change. The country lacks a process for positive, constructive decision-making.

Without the old money, this country is right back where it was pre-ww1. Last century was the American Century, because this was a developing nation the world poured its money and people into. Now the world looks to develop another up and comer, and several developing nations are preparing themselves to step into that role, the money has begun moving on once again.
