I found that in most stories, Smarties aren't really either "Smarty Syndrome" (Who lack empathy) or "Smarty Friends" (Who are actually smart), they're just fluffies who have been thrust into power and become greedy. One getting knocked down a peg seemed pretty easy to do. I also liked the idea of a mare who was done with this bullshit, and would beat the shit out of anything that tried to hurt her babies (or at least trt to.) She's kind of based off of this picture, where the mare is going out of her way to protect her babies in a less than "Pway an wub!" way, and more in a "Actually try to ensure survival" way.
