Like me.
Nine years have passed since then, and I can still hear the screams of people who were infected, half dead, being thrown onto massive fires to try and stem the sickness.

My name is Zoe Jaimes Callum, I’m twenty-three, and I live in safe zone six, which was once part of a city called Santa Monica before the plague.

Nine years ago, the world was ravaged by a plague brought on by hasbio’s technicolor equine companions; people called them fluffies when they first came out; now we call them vermin, or shitrats.

Thousands died, including my family, and growing up without was tough. Even in the safe zones that the remaining bits of government formed by building tall concrete walls through swaths of abandoned cities; most kids that survived by forming gangs, or in the case of the girls, selling themselves for a place to stay. Me, I learned to climb the walls using a cobbled together grappling hook, and since then, I preferred to roam outside the safe zone; at first, I would only roam just outside the walls, picking up anything I thought was of value that construction crews had left behind, all while avoiding any shitrats I came across. Eventually, I went further out, and made a nice living for myself by bringing back medical supplies and other valuables that I found in the desecrated buildings that so many once worked, lived, and played in.

Lately though, people have been forming their own expeditions outside the walls, and about a month ago was the first time the gates had been opened since the walls were built. I was contacted about a week ago to lead an expedition in the heart of what was once downtown Los Angeles. Some doctor had left a file in his office when the military forced him to evacuate, according to him, he was working on a vaccine against the plague, and he had been close to being done when they dragged him out. Apparently someone had told him that I was good at finding things out there.

I closed my laptop and got up from my desk. We had internet again, and it turns out that other places around the world were worse off than us. According to a friend of mine in the United Kingdom, the European mainland was a dark zone. A dark zone basically means that, as far as anyone knew, there were no survivors, and no one was allowed to go in and look. As more and more countries came back online, it became apparent that the human race was teetering on the edge of extinction, with maybe a few million people left alive across the globe. I knew for a fact the in safe zone six, there was at least twenty thousand people, and in zone five, which was what was left of San Francisco, there was at least a hundred thousand people. No one had heard from the east coast yet, and most assumed the worst, although there was stories of a group from atlanta that was holed up in a prison in georgia somewhere. Apparently their leader was a sheriff at one point, but I digress.

I ate a quick breakfast of a twinkie, packed some water and a tinned can of spaghetti for lunch, loaded my beretta, grabbed my aluminium baseball bat and grappling hook and made my way out of my apartment in what was once a posh hotel near the santa monica pier to the wall. Today I’m going to raid an old police station to see if I could secure ammunition and armor for the upcoming expedition. I walked cheerfully until I got to an alley near the wall, then ducked in quickly, threw my hook up, checked that it was secure, and quickly climbed up to the top. Before dropping down, I checked to make sure no one saw me, and that there were no vermin anywhere near the wall. There weren’t, and no one did, so I pulled my hook free, and dropped into the old city.

The air was crisp as I made my way through the streets, in between parked and burned out cars, broken glass, and the occasional skeleton of some poor souls who lost their lives to the sickness. As the morning wore on, I noted how quiet everything was, birds usually chirped fluttered through the trees, but everything seemed still. I stopped in my tracks when I smelled it, a rancid odor of feces and urine, and it seemed to be getting stronger. I knew what it meant; a fluffy herd was approaching, and quickly. I had to act, so I ducked down behind a car and tried the door, it popped open, and I climbed in quickly and lowered the seat back to where i couldn't be seen. I heard them as they passed, the smarty was barking orders at his herd.
“We fin nummies today hewwd! nu mowwe tummy owwies and fwuffies goin’ fowwebeww sweepies. Smawty nummy findewws say nummies ‘wound hewe, an’ Smawty say, betteww be, ow Smarty make nummy findewws into nummies!”

“Filthy little vermin.” I swore under my breath, before continuing on toward my destination. Today was already shaping up to be a long day, and I was starting to get a sinking feeling that something was going to go wrong.
