I'm a 19 year old british Roman Catholic. Ask me anything?

The stories and information posted here are artistic works of fiction and falsehood.
Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact.

I'm a 31 year old Canadian manic-depressive with a massive anxiety disorder who was raised Roman Catholic, but lost his faith after his grandfather died. I'm now a Nihilist, but have a strong foundation for being a good person despite no longer having faith in God or the Church.

My question: Will you have more resolve than I did?

A request: Save this thread, and remember it if you have a crisis of faith. Either take it as a reason to continue believing, or a reason to abandon it as I have.

Because people who can't comprehend anything else will believe whatever they think answers their questions about the universe. And no, the universe didn't just 'happen', it spread out from a single point. We don't yet know what was around before that but there are many promising theories, none of which involve a magical beardy man in the sky popping everything into existence in a week.

No, it isn't. Religious fools would have men of science say it for fear of their safety, but realistically nobody in the scientific community gives any credence whatsoever to the thought that a magical being made everything in a week.
>>

Right there the narrative is suspicious.

What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

Dude. The books of the Old and new are books. They're books. Written by people who were WRITERS. Have you met many writers? Do you know how many drugs they do? How fucked up their minds are? Neither of them are "true" in the sense that every word is 100% historically accurate fact. Anyone who thinks they are is just blind.
>>
>>739662834
Are you serious??
Do you understand the difference between Catholicism and Fundamental Christianity or are you so lazy that you just lump them all under the same heading?

This idea of taking the Bible literally was addressed by the Catholic Saint Augustine around 300AD. You're literally repeating an argument that's 1700 years old and throwing it around like you just re-invented the wheel

"All these things [Jerusalem, Sarah and Hagar, the smitten rock] stood for something other than what they were, but all the same they were themselves bodily realities. And when the narrator mentioned them he was not employing figurative language, but giving an explicit account of things which had a forward reference that was figurative. So then the tree of life also was Christ….He is rightly called whatever came before him in order to signify him. (The Literal Meaning of Genesis 8.4.8)

Anything in the divine discourse that cannot be related either to good morals or to the true faith should be taken as figurative."

It's still pretty obscure stuff. I can see how conservative Christian scholars might be obligated to take it at face value.

As for your claim that Jesus is a copy of the hero myth, citing Dionysus (lets add Mithras, Vishnu/Kali in there as well and all the other lazy comparisons which were dried up around the 1920's) let me ask you this:

What is the common thread amongst all of these Hero myths? (let's take "The Golden Bough" by Sir Frazer as the perfect analysis of comparative mythology for now)

This is called strengthening the oppositions argument in order for it to look even sillier when it is torn down. It is a common debate strategy.
I could probably even make your point stronger by saying that Mithras and Dionysus too resurrected from the dead.
I could also tell you that they were also supposed to have been born from virgins.

Oh my goodness... the weight of the evidence!! Its so overwhelming.

Well let me start by saying that the comparisons are actually completely false and that all these comparisons were brought together in a single book which has already been debunked as hackneyed and not scholarly. Find it yourself, i won't do it all for you. Here's an easily digestible video that may set you on the right path

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muM7Uk40iRE

Secondly, the fact that the life of Jesus (who was a real person - no serious historian would deny that fact) shares many similarities to Hero stories is precisely the point, but it is the difference that make, well, all the difference.

Look up Rene Girard (French philosopher who was inducted into the French Immortals. What does this mean? It means he's on the mount rushmore of French Philosophy.)
Rene Girard discovered the difference between Christianity and Hero Myths based on his theory of mimetic desire and the scapegoating mechanism attached to it. Would you like me to explain this to you? Only if you ask nicely and respectfully.

O LORD, God of my salvation, what time I cry in the night before Thee,

Let my prayer come before Thee, incline Thine ear unto my cry.

For my soul is sated with troubles, and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.

I am counted with them that go down into the pit; I am become as a man that hath no help;

Set apart among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom Thou rememberest no more; and they are cut off from Thy hand.

Thou hast laid me in the nethermost pit, in dark places, in the deeps.

Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and all Thy waves Thou pressest down. Selah

Thou hast put mine acquaintance far from me; Thou hast made me an abomination unto them; I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

Mine eye languisheth by reason of affliction; I have called upon Thee, O LORD, every day, I have spread forth my hands unto Thee.

Wilt Thou work wonders for the dead? Or shall the shades arise and give Thee thanks? Selah

Shall Thy mercy be declared in the grave? or Thy faithfulness in destruction?

Shall Thy wonders be known in the dark? and Thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

But as for me, unto Thee, O LORD, do I cry, and in the morning doth my prayer come to meet Thee.

LORD, why castest Thou off my soul? Why hidest Thou Thy face from me?

I am afflicted and at the point of death from my youth up; I have borne Thy terrors, I am distracted.

Thy fierce wrath is gone over me; Thy terrors have cut me off.

They came round about me like water all the day; they compassed me about together.

Friend and companion hast Thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.
