is automation really gona be a big thing, or is it all just a bunch of malarkey? I need to know for job reasons.

Nice ass
Anymore ass pics of her
>>
Once it becomes affordable, yes.

But as off now it still has a long way into being applicable in a safe work environment.
>>
>>739571545
If it's all automated then their are no persons to be safe. I'm not being a smart ass. I work on robotics and automation systems and I see people being replaced by robots often. The owners see it as a win-win. Pay less people and less people to be responsible for(safety, health, benefits...).
>>
>>739571545

as long as a sizable labor force accepts lower and lower pay, this will stave off the implementation of robo automation, but once the labor market adjusts and fewer and fewer individuals see those positions as lucrative opportunities and demand continues to rise for higher quality products, those jobs will be turned over to automated systems. but there will be no single "moment" this occurs.

Here you go pal.

Check out the Wall Street Journal article referred to in this article as well.

Overall the idea is that automation frees up resources and that humans move on to more specialized jobs
>>
Automation is a broad field. Your fridge is automated to keep a certain temp just like a satelite is automated to send out certain signals. It already is a big thing
>>
>>739571779
On big companies, yeah. It's totally awesome.

But automation as people are pushing it right now will give a huge handicap on small bussinessess. And it is an economic principle that you should never get rid of the small providers, ever, no matter how shit their work or service might be.

Everything is already automated you dumb fuck. If you do simple manual labor, you are already obsolete.
>>
Yes lets get rid of workers so we can make more money!

Who tf is going to be giving these companies money if people havent got a job to earn money

Automation is fuckin dumb
>>
>>739572151
No sir that's not how it works ideally the guy working the assembly line will make a lateral move or find work elsewhere completely that he finds more fulfilling, how many different jobs have you had in your life?
>>
>>739572005
Yep, I work at big companies. My company makes the robots/installs/maintains/repairs. We get the big guys first but make simpler ones in the background for smaller companies.
>>
>>739571211
BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPP!!!
>>
>>739571211
Probably since car companies are trying to compete with each other over autonomous driving
>>
>>739572290
I've had plenty of jobs. Eventually the lateral or upward moves fill up. If the demand stays the same for their product then people become disposable.
>>
>>739572259
Ideally you don't get rid of all your workers but the workers you keep become more specialized and overall productivity increases which in turn makes things cheaper so you don't need as much money to buy them too but nobody talks about that for some reason.
>>
>>739572259

unskilled labor will have to get trained/certifications/educations i guess. someone is going to have to pay for it if they want the economy to not fall as the rug is pulled under their feet.
>>
>>739572219
>>739572290
As someone working on industrialization, you are both shilling or plain stupid.

You want to get rid of manual labor just because people don't produce fast enough, but once you fire thousand of people at once or in a very short period of time in a specific region you make a huge economic hole that take years to fix.
>>
>>739572506
Why drop the price if people are paying what they pay now? $$$$$$$$$
>>
>>739572506
>workers you keep become more specialised

This isnt a video game where people magically become specialised at something.

The self checkouts have already cucked people out of a job. It's entirely pointless
>>
>>739572464
People are always disposable.
People working today aren't afforded the luxury of having a job for 50 years and then retiring but this doesn't mean that you have to be a drone the rest of your life. If you can see the bigger picture you realize that your average person leads a mediocre life and most people are content with the bare minimum but if you really want more out of life you will separate yourself from these people and work more efficiently and always worry about improving yourself and whatever it is your after.

Showing up to a job isn't enough.
>>
>>739572612
Get a degree in mecahtronics or software. Be the one that fixes the robots.
>>
>>739572506
>You'll get rid of your manforce
>You won't have to pay pension plans and shit anymore
It's because it cost money to the owners of the company that you are selling your ideas to implement your plans, and it deters a sale whenever you tell them you shouldn't fire a lot of your human resources just because they are not qualified right at the moment you come in.

Most dumbfucks I know simply skip this part and implement the system without second thoughts.
>>
>>739572747
Never said that. Just saying that as automation takes over eventually people will be the casualty. Like I said, I fix the robots.
>>
>>739572672
Your right,
this happened to our steel industry, however it had more to do with the fact that the steel we produced could be produced more efficiently and therefore cheaply elsewhere and less to do with technology over all you want things to be cheaper.
>>739572693
Because that's how supply and demand works it's basic economic theory.
>>739572710
It's an economics term sir no magic involved
you see examples of it everyday

"Definition of Specialization. Specialization is when a nation or individual concentrates its productive efforts on producing a limited variety of goods. It oftentimes has to forgo producing other goods and relies on obtaining those other goods through trade"
>>
>>739572693
Because you are leaving a huge load of people outta their income and won't be able to afford it?

Do you guys ever paid attention at the economy class. All engineering and automation degrees are being forced to take the course for a reason.
>>
>>739572996
If I'm being 100% honest I wouldn't' rely on a pension plan.
You are in charge of your savings and your retirement making money is about being frugal and investing moderately people just assume that someone has to look after them when they get old and I don't think that's correct. Look at the Baby Boomers.
>>
ITT: Faggots dont know automation will ruin their precious capitalism
>>
>>739573043
Supply and demand...that's funny. Go back to douchebag101. What determines the price is what people will pay. If you buy it for 40 now and my production costs go down why would I pass it on to the consumer? Unless another competitor does the same and does pass it down. Eat a fat cock.
>>
>>739573035
To put it bluntly there will always be jobs that aren't suited for robots but you could be right your thinking is along the line of Ted K's even though you work with tech would you consider yourself a Neo-Luddite?
>>
>>739573172
Maybe when you are actually out of class an in to manufacturing you'll see the theory and the reality are a bit different.
>>
>>739573237
Agreed. But for whatever reason teaching finances to the average Joe is harder than it looks like.

I mean, even that scammer dumbfuck Kiyosaki couldn't explain it any simpler. If you spend more than you earn of fucking course you will have huge debt.
>>
>>739573329
You just answered your own question

Because someone else will offer it for a cheaper price in order to make more sales, that's the key driving force to supply side innovation.
>>
>>739573377
I absolutely agree. They can't do everything. But they are trying like hell to get them to be able to. I actually refer to him as "Uncle Ted"...seriously. So I guess that would be a yes.
>>
>>739573329
>>739573482
Well, theory says you will have a competitor sooner or later which will eventually force you to down the price.

See, this is the importance of studying money. You can be ahead of your competitors before they even make it into scene.
>>
>>739573242

why would a system ruin itself given full understanding of the effect those implementations will have? the businesses that have planned correctly for the shift will see success and other businesses will soon follow (because of the free market) maybe a few million people will have a rough time and riot for a few years, but adaptation will occur. capitalism works

>found the communist.
>>
>>739572259
without automation a honda civic would cost somewhere closer to 100k USD. At a certain point it just keeps things affordable.
>>
>>739571211

who is this girl
>>
>>739571545

Automation also decreases defects. For example, a robotic cook can make infinite additions/deletions to a customer's burger and never gets it wrong. The burger is always cooked to the proper temperature because of infra-red thermometer. Its never late to work, doesn't call in sick, no benefits to worry about, also you don't have to retrain someone every three months when they move to a different job. Also the robotic worker can work 24-7 at a rate of speed that a human could never match, you even save on utility costs as you don't need AC or Heat, lights or even a bathroom
>>
>>739571211
What industry do you want to be in, OP?

The general answer is yes, it is in fact going to be huge, and many jobs will end in the next 10-50 years.
>>
>>739573552
The thing is that pricing gets fixed. A lot of what you see as "competitors" are actually owned by the same people if you look high enough up. After the death of small business(thanks WalMart) it is tough to find real competition in some areas.
>>
>>739571877

This will never happen. How many times have you heard, if you accept lower wages you can keep your job? Most would say, fuck you and quit.
>>
>>739573507
Because the generation before us believed that it was financially feasible and the social responsibility of the next generation to pick up the tab and that seems to be the concensus with a large portion of our current generation but if you're smart enough to see the big picture you'll be frugal and not expect any type of social welfare.

Did you see Kiyosaki being investigated on Canadian Television for fraud? It was pretty funny.
>>
>>739573847
Once again, this is true for already big companies.

You guys seem to forget that not everybody will be able to keep the pace with the change.
>>
>>739571211
automation is already a thing. last place i worked had a machine called a Doosan Lynx 300. basically a robot that machines shit out of nylon rods, 24/7. twenty years ago, that work would have been done by six guys on six lathes.
>>
>>739573779
Yes ofc it works lmao
Kys
>>
>>739573847
You get it!
>>
>>739573905

And with the vast improvements in AI (artificial intelligence) machines will not only program each other, they will in time also fix other robots.
>>
Automation is a weird thing because all theories follow the "most logical" path that employers will spend as little money as possible on actual staff and focus on robots. What automation theories don't usually take into account is whether or not people enjoy talking to other people and being social when being provided with services. This aspect in particular can be most easily seen in restaurants - a lot of people like to have that bit of interaction with people as opposed to some robot giving them their food.
>>
>>739573913

you don't cut pay of pre-existing employees. Unions renegotiate starting pay for new hires and that pay is lowered each hire group. they also put caps on how many times rate is increased and the max pay after 10 or whatever years of service. basically dinsentivizing the job over the years and driving unskilled labor back onto the street.
>>
>>739573779
Because they aren't thinking of proper long term. They just want to maximise profit asap, nothing gor the future/beyond their lifetime.
>>
>>739573720
He brings up some brilliant arguments in his writings. Did you know he made a new book? I lean more towards technology in the workplace being more about efficiency and I think it's in general a good thing but I love to hear the other side of the argument and no one makes a more coherent argument than Uncle Ted.
>>
The customers of my company are always striving for a "zero person" factory. Just the factory portion. People will be outside the factory monitoring and watching for issues but for a lot of them that is their goal.
>>
>>739573960
>the generation before us believed that it was financially feasible and the social responsibility of the next generation to pick up the tab

Sorry retard, its been that way from the start of social security for example, don't blame the previous generations. SSI wouldn't be broke except the government stole from the retirement fund.
>>
>>739573779
To be fair these people are afraid of the externalities that could potentially destroy the lifestyle that they have grown accustomed to but it always blows my mind how little people think of themselves that they have no capacity to adapt to change.
>>
>>739574013

Its going to be down to the fast food restaurant on the corner, you can bet your $15 an hour wage cucks for that.
>>
>>739574225
Truth be told, robotics and automation has too many sides.

Off course that is if you are human enough to consider the people's side, which for whatever reason most people in the bussiness don't care enough to do.

/r9k/ up all these fuckers to be honest.
>>
>>739571211
depends what your job is, plenty will be automated not all.
>>
>>739574023

I used to work CNC. This machine is already doomed by 3d printing. Instead of starting with a block of material and machining it down which creates a lot of waste, now you just print the parts you need, metal, plastic, composite, etc..
>>
>>739574202

smart businesses are capable of understanding long term stability. what shareholder would invest in a business that doesn't have a long term perspective? i don't think you know shit.

certainly every business has short term goals, but often based on long term objectives, and an interest in remaining competitive.

that's exactly why automation is happening. No medium size business wants to see its people thrown onto the street with nothing to show for it after all those years. Empathy plays a part in this transition.
>>
>>739573909
It sounds like you're just repeating an idea that was popular in the early 2000's but only now is being debunked.

Small businesses tend to be ineffecient, overpriced, and lacking in selection.

I knew someone that predicted that bars would cease once they banned smoking because people went to bars to socialize. And we all know that didn't happen, right? People adapted. Same with an automated restaurant.

Yeah, there is always that douche bag that holds up the line to talk to the clerk about the weather, but the reason drive-thru are popular is because the reason people go there is to get something to eat in as little time as possible.

If I had a choice, I would place my order through my smartphone, which is uploaded to an automated robot, it doesn't screw up the order, like when I order a chili at wendy's and drive away only to find the worker forgot to put a spoon in the bag. My burger is cooked to perfection, it omitted the onion as requested, and the fries are perfectly salted, because its done to order, not some bored 16 year old pouring salt because he's isn't paying attention. Also he didn't spit in my food this time.

>>739574199

Let me explain it to you. When Trump started with the deportation theme (meaning a shortage of workers), and the existing workers started demanding $15 dollars an hour (and who knows where this will stop), restaurants accelerated the automation of restaurants. "The new robot McDonald’s is located at 7th St & McDowell Rd in downtown Phoenix. McDonald’s says that if the store is a success, 25,000 more robot-run restaurants will be built in the next three years"

This means mass layoffs, however you want to "you don't cut the pay of pre-existing employees" because you FIRE THEM.

Also:

The restaurant will still employ a small team of human employees to insure all of the robots are working correctly, the food and cleaning supplies remain stocked along with removing the money collected by the robots. Visitors to the restaurant will see these new robots working in harmony at a speed of 50 times faster than the average McDonald’s employee, with no chance of error.

I have seen forcasts that predict that there will be only one or two workers per store...FOR CLEANING and the occasional error. NEW HIRES??? There won't be a need!!!

You sound awful naive, if you think that CNC can't be replaced. What I am talking about is that currently the operator (me) opens the door, places the material in, torques it down, selects the program and starts the machine. Frequently something is done wrong. They already gang CNC machines together so that one common robot, loads the parts, scans the part for correct program and starts the cycle. Upon completion, again, the part can be scanned, and inspected straight to shipment because you can implement Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) upon finish machining, eliminating final inspection.

No matter how you cut it, automation will cut into a lot of industries and a lot of workers will be laid-off
>>
>>739575994

>machines take over all jobs

>>
>>739576606
I don't think I said doom or gloom, not as a whole. Inside of larger companies they seem to care more about only money. If your creative idea costs 10 more per unit then it may not make it.

Don't get me wrong, I think it is great for big bands to find their new guitarist on YouTube and all the arts&crafts on Etsy and shit I love that but in the "machine" of bigger business good stuff like that gets ignored/lost/delayed far too often.

Japan is sterile. Its incredibly clean and orderly. If you don't fit the norm you will be looked at like you are odd. Old ladies on their way to tea break would pick up small twigs that fell from the trees, like "how dare that tree litter the ground with twigs".
>>
>>739576446

Like anything else, just look at todays news about the nigger that refused to help the policeman in uniform. Yes, errors will happen. How many did humans do today?
>>
>>739576703
I didn't live there, just worked for a Japanese company in the States. The Japanese guys I worked with showed me the 3 business thing. I have traveled a lot and I liked most everywhere I went but the States are home and even though we are fucked...it's still home.

And I keep my order as simple as possible, so that the retard working there won't get overwhelmed. You don't know how many times I order coffee, with no cream or sugar. Go to get my order, how many cream or sugar do you want? Uhh....none. Oh, so you want your coffee black? Okay. Hands coffee to me, do yo want sugar? No, black. Yes, do you want sugar. Sheesh.

Back to the buns, if those buns had been made in an automated factory, they would have been laser 3-d scanned for accuracy and SIZE so this never should have happened.

>>

Oh fuck yeah. Humans fuck shit up all the time. It is funny to see a robot go ape-shit. Even then they try to blame a human. "Who worked on it last? Who programmed it? Who missed that last bolt?"
>>
>>739577051
I've never used Etsy and Youtube seems to restrictive as far as censorship goes for it's future progress. Good is so god damned subjective though people aren't willing to pay for "good" things as much as they're wiling to pay for "cheap and easy to use" things.
Case and point Beta v.s VHS.
>>
>>739577177
that sounds comforting culturally we have the opposite thing going on here it's like "how dare someone else not pick these twigs up "
>>
>>739577507
I like big buns and I cannot lie. No shit though. We make some measurements down to picometers. It blows my fucking mind sometimes how small that is and that a difference of a couple nanometers is like a fucking mile.
>>
>>739576446

That machine was designed wrong if something like the wrong size bun was put through it. It should have had a scanner designed into it so that it would have rejected the bun upon insertion.
>>
>>739577656
I was just using those as examples. I still have a top-loading Beta with a "remote" that has a long wire. Don't go hatin' the Beta!
>>
>>739577425
What's this "we" shit?
I feel like I'm doing fine.
Be Honest what's your biggest gripe about America currently? But you have to choose something that has personally affected you and is inherently "America's fault".

Hehe bun insertion.

And as bad as this sounds, maybe people can relocate to less populated areas since they no longer have to live close to where they live and maybe it will eliminate the homeless problem

Over Simplied but straight to the point.
I like it.

I'm glad you are doing fine. Every country has its problems that we make fun of each other for. The US has its share as well.
>>
>>739577936
Nah I'm not hating the Beta I mean it's just an example of a technology that had better quality as far as picture quality, resolution, and sound but people didn't want the bulkiness of the first Beta's and they didn't like the price tag so they went with VHS which was cheaper and had the record feature and cheaper cassettes.
>>
>>739578229
I'm not perfect and neither is my life but there's nothing about "America" that has ever stood in my way, quite the opposite I was just wondering what you meant by "we're fucked" is all.

Niggers, feminists and liberals in general, essentially.

Its called operating "lights-out". The factory floor will have zero utility costs and will run 24-7 with very little intervention. The CNC factory I worked at was trying this, I watched 9 machines and other than loading the occasional part, I was there just for emergencies. And then you check the parts in between cycles and at completion. But I left before they installed automated inspection machines on the floor

Automation is over-rated. There is no such thing as AI yet. Not even close.

Machines ain't taking over, and the systems the elites have put in place so far are very fragile.

Dude, I worked at a government lab. We were the first lab to put a kilowatt CW laser through fiber optic, this professor came to lecture us from Cal State Northridge said that it would be a while before a kilowatt could be put through a fiber optic. Sorry, we are doing it now.

Your professor is wrong. Automation is happening faster than you can imagine. And your professor is wrong about AI.

>physics professor
>"complex programming"
lmao, I'm sure your years of experience in fucking Fortran qualifies you to talk about the forefront of AI research.

Mathfag here, there's a lot of recent advances in Machine Learning that have made it practical to solve a number of problems with it. Right now it's likely that we will see many instances where AI will be used to aid people in doing their jobs though in some cases this increase in efficiency will lead to less workers being required and may get to the point where humans may no longer be necessary for a particular task. Stuff like link related:
http://sungsoo.github.io/2017/01/23/adaptive-machine-learning.html (click the first youtube video)

The above increase in efficiency may kind of indirectly open up a lot of other possibilities in automation that could reduce a need for workers in non-obvious places.

Currently though there are limitations to the technology. There's a lot of researchers working on solving/extending these limitations and when we see begin to see solutions that will really be the time to worry. Here is Darpa explaining the current state of AI.

I am the professor who is the sauce...

What we have are very complicated algorithms that can do cool things. That does not amount to machine intelligence.

Just read some Douglas Hofstadter.

>>739579762
Yeah... it's always just around the corner...
>>
>>739579796
>The current state of AI isn't full blown conscious intelligence yet.
>Therefore [all that dumb shit you said in >>739579098]

Motherfucker do you teach students with that logical rigor? You do not need to have full blown consciousness in order to produce practical solutions to modern day problems (without the use of humans). You're right about modern AI not being anywhere close to consciousness but that is not relevant to the problem at hand.

yeah automation is taking off, but instead of lowering the price of goods companys simply pocket the money and lay off workers.
this combined with inflation will create a market where the supply is greater than are ability to purchase the supply.

So can someone tell me why would savings in the cost of overhead ever be passed along to the consumer when the marketplace is gradually more and more dominated by a set of, cooperating, growing, mega-corporations "competing" with each other for a set portion of disposable income, provided to the population by a government guaranteed income program?
