I used to have one of these.

For about a year I kept two ziplock bags of creamed corn in the freezer on a flat surface.
I played many, many hours of CS:S with my laptop sitting on a block of frozen creamed corn. It would get hot as fuck and laggy because the heat sink was clogged with dust and I was too dumb to know.. But that corn would suck the heat right out of the bottom of the case and it would never stutter once. I could get roughly 3 hours total out of both sides of one bag, with 3 bags in rotation I could play all night.

After I got my shit together and cleaned the sink the corn was no longer necessary, it was a decent performing laptop for it's time.
But yeah, fucking creamed corn, man.
Refrigerant of the future...

No, I kept it on a countertop. the bottom would get wet, but the top touching the latop didn't. Like I said, the laptop got hot as fuck, it was a latitude, one of their gaming series at the time so everything ran full blast and hot anyway even when it could breathe, so it was likely high temp and above the dew point between the two objects.

Sort of on topic but slightly in a different direction.

I've always loved threads like this, and I came across some youtube channels dealing with fucked up tech and cleaning/ restoring them into working condition. It's so fucking satisfying. The last one I watched was this one about an NES. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOCfLN0bKcg

I used to work for an electronics warranty company where we would have to file claims on electronics. Since I was a supervisor, i would get rejections to service from our repair facility. these rejections always had a picture attached. (i was unable to save them to post here, sadly, due to the rules) Most of the time it was damage due to physical trauma (something that was not covered under out plan) and we had to call the customer back to explain why we were rejecting the claim... but every once and a while i'd have some really disgusting shit come by my desk. I'm talking insect infestations, various bodily fluids, mold, sour milk. Some of them were really quite bad. I think some of the craziest were the infestations. dead mice (plural) in the tower, ant hills, cockroaches, termites and all the shit and filth they left behind... The technicians at the repair facility would simply take a picture and immediately seal the electronic in plastic, box it up and send it back to the customer.

Call me retarded (i'm sure you will regardless) but, aside from any potential fuckups caused by the actual mechanical scrubbing and soap residue, wouldn't it still work if it was hypothetically 100% dry when plugged back in?
>>
>>739358599
Having an ant problem in your home isn't uncommon, but for that level of shit to happen, the fucker must be lazy as fuck to not get it taken care of
>>

Once you're touched by water, you will never be 100% dry
>>
>>739358878
I would imagine so if you used deionized water, my point is mineral deposits causing shorts or the pH of the water causing rust or decay.

this took a bit of thought

5. I guess i can kinda lump together all the baby vomit and milk because this was pretty common. kids would throw up on the computer or pour their drink down one of the vents of a computer. the shit got spoiled and moldy if it did not immediately short out the computer. i figure most customers did not use their computer often so it must have dried before they tried to use it again.
4. once a guy put spray insulation foam in the tower. i regret to this day not calling this guy back personally because i really wanted to know why he did it.
3. A wasps nest in the computer tower - i have no idea how the guy did not realize this, but apparently when they opened the tower they were still alive.
2. a dead garden snake (it scared the shit out of the service center guy)
1. the tower had become a nest for mice, aside from a two dead mice in the tower it was full of their bedding and shit and piss. the guy apparently just took out his fan because it was not working, and that's how the mice got entry. i figure they went in there because it was warm. i've never seen something like that in my life

washed computers in the sink before and had the work for 10 years afterwards

the key is to discharge the components before getting them wet

then drying them out making sure to shake, towel dry and then for 30min to 1hr in 200F oven and letting them sit out in dry air for

when new computer parts are made they go through a similar process only the water is filtered to get rid of any excess chemicals/minerals etc

but do it right and it doesnt matter.. just dont let them soak and dont be too rough with it all and give it time to dry

ez pz

I'll just do a few honorable mentions. I need to get to bed.

termites were pretty common in computers but the worst cases i've seen were in outdoor TVs - why anyone would make such a product i'd never know. these were particularly troubling because we were always worried they would spread to the facility. same goes for fleas and bedbugs.

i am seeing a lot of dust in this thread, and really that was pretty common. i know we are all shocked by those pictures but i have to say - im pretty desensitized by that shit by now.

i've literally had more than one customer put their computer in a washing machine. most of these people were elderly, so i can kinda forgive them.

I hate cockroaches. so many fucking cockroaches. they love warm places. they leave like this residue behind that's pretty easy to recognize once you see it a few times. it's actually helped me out a few times when apartment hunting or going to a restaurant. if i see that shit, i'm OUT

i've seen people wrap shit and attach stuff with duct tape and electrical tape all the time. i really don't understand what people think they are doing. like excessive amounts of tape. the most annoying is when they use scotch tape of all things.

i once talked to a guy that had put his computer in a mini fridge, he told me he'd keep beer in there and stuff. the condensation probably what wrecked his computer. i denied that claim, the guy was also an asshole.

also to add to that, i have denied grey area claims when the customers an asshole. that shit never gets you anywhere. normally if you are being reasonable but persistent i'll just give it to them. but when they are dicks - fuck em

You do realise that cleaning a motherboard with water and a sponge is completely safe and is basically the only way to properly clean your motherboard, right?

There are two things you must do to not break it:

1) Use the soft side of the sponge to clear dust from the different areas with precision, DO NOT scrub up and down the motherboard or you might break off the various micro components on it. The capacitors are especially delicate (the things that look like little batteries stick up from your motherboard).

2) Make sure that the motherboard is COMPLETELY dry before re-inserting into your pc.

You can get most electrical components wet, especially if, like a motherboard, they dont store electrical charge when not connected. The damage comes when you reconnect components or expose components to static electricity while there is moisture on the motherboard. The water acts as a conduit and allows electricity to arc between components.

The safest way of drying is gently laying the motherboard on a dense cloth towel (not a furry fiberous towel) and gently laying another towel ontop. Leave it for half an hour, flip it over, and then leave it till it appears to be dry. You can then remove the top towel and allow it to air dry for a while just to make sure.

Only when you're ABSOLUTELY sure its dry should you reconnect it. I've done this multiple times, and as long as you handle your motherboard correctly, it's the best method of cleaning it.

Think further...
What happens if it mixes with the dirt on the board and creaks under a chip?
Depending on the dirt it becomes conductive more or less.
There will be corrosion in the long term and in the short term it might weaken signals.
DC and water is always a bad combination.
