Navy vet here OP. I loved my time in the navy, it was the ultimate boys club of hilarity. People forced to eat other people's snot during crossing the line ceremony, laughing at friends who accidentally raw dogged Philippine hookers, sneaking drinks after work in the berthing. This is not the navy experience you will get and this has been confirmed by my brother on active duty. Anti hazing faggots and snowflakes have taken over the military and have ruined the party for everyone......but hey at least you'll travel to places you've never dreamed of.

I was in 2011-2015 and loved it. Not at first though, but about six month in when everything made sense and we were on our first cruise to the Mediterranean. There is still some hazing but nothing serious as this anon >>739098142

Navy /b/ro here.

If you go to the surface fleet, your life will suck. If you go on a submarine, your life will suck AND you won't see the sun. If you go aviation, you will get Thai hookers and lots of beer.

But as an enlisted, expect 2-3 years of dumbfuckery in the name of "tradition." Also, Chiefs are going to ruin your life because muh deckplate leadurship.

I was 8 years in the surface ; crossed the equator and the arctic circle. No one ever made me eat snot and if they did it wasn't going to happen. No one was ever made a better man by being tormented by others for their sick sense of fun. I believe in tough training and the instilling esprit de corps but if you want to humiliate grown people who volunteered thier lives to service of country then you don't need to be in the US military. Go join a college frat.

>>739099763
I knew lots of people who worked on subs while I was in the Norwegian Navy. It's not for everyone. Unless you're the captain or 2'd in charge you likely won't know where you're headed, and there's lots of restrictions on what you can bring on-board.

For some reason they're superstitious as fuck, if you've got anything that resembles a horse you'll hear it. (horses were used in the past to drag corpses from the dock or some shit like that).

Also, the rest of the navy calls them stink-tanks for a reason, the fucking smell that comes out of that hatch after a few weeks out is fucking terrible.

The tribalism is hilarious to be honest, every single profession and group hates another group for no fucking reason.

Only thing I heard was our reputation for being cowards, but to be fair, if your ship is raided and you work in the radio-room, your job is to lock yourself in and destroy everything while your friends die. It's fucked up to think about, but the KOI-18 Crypto-tapes are digestible, lol.
>>
>>739101831
You're definitely right about that. A while back we had our sister ship run aground somewhere in the Black Sea and half the officers were fired with several going to court martial, so after 7 death aboard, crucifiction doesn't sound too far-fetched.

The modern Navy is mostly-devoid of the classical "lock him in a fan room and beat the fuck out of him" nonsense. This is good, but there is also a lot of PC bullshit we have to deal with. The previous set of leadership (Mabus, mostly) did a really go job of trying to force libcuck politics into the military (see: transgender policy). The current SECDEF is, well, Fucking Mattis so things are on the upswing with actual military things and less corporate bullshit.

That said, I have found the Navy to be the most rewarding thing I have done with my life so far.

The Navy has its own air force, lts own infantry (Marines - which has its own air force), it is a mine sweeping navy, it has its own CIA, its own sepcial forces, it is a submarine force, a surface navy, an amphibious force, a combat construction force. It has a vast and complex logistics system. There are oceanographic and atmospheric research activities as well. It also has an estimable medical system (including research )for which also services the marines and often participates humanitarian activities with the Commissioned Corp of the USPHS. The are two navy rate which can be a part of nearly all these communities: one is HM or Hospital Corpsmen and the other is RP Religious Program Specialist.
RP is a good rate if you are a person of faith and like detailed administrative work at the behest of Chaplains who are notorious hard-ass task masters. But HM can be a rewarding that can take you anywhere in the Navy world. There are downsides to this rate of course (as with all rates) – one being training won’t convert into civilian certification as would other service’ s medic rates. But the HM rate is one to consider because it has potential for a career path: many former HM become Pas, Rns, LPNs and MDs

Subfag, here.
Firstly, the Norwegian navy is nothing even remotely like the USN, which I assume OP is joining.

We're not really superstitious, there's not really any big restrictions on what you can bring aboard (depends on the boat, but doesn't vary much), and with the exception of special assignments, we almost always know where we are and where we're going to be.

As for the smell: it is not a stench in any way, shape or form. However, it is definitely unique due to the chemical we use to scrub CO2. It smells like cat piss, but unless it gets on you, you won't smell like that at all.

But it's definitely not for everyone, because otherwise we'd be a bunch of fags just like the surface fleet. Fuck them.

im thinking of joining as an aviation electronics tech (AT?) or general electronics tech (ET?).

Why wouldnt aviation just be assigned to a carrier anyway? in which case, a diesel destroyer or something would hit more ports

Hahahahaha.
No.

Everyone on that shit was gay, just one guy took it home.

They enlist for the same reasons anyone joins the navy: for a job, adventure, career growth, escape family and be part of something big and meaningful and the hope of some fun. I don’t think they joined to be submissive masochists abused by sociopaths bullys

There's P-3/P-8, and E-6B squadrons that are land-based only. We deploy to a bunch of Air Force fields all over the world. Most of the guys who go this route avoid going on a ship at all in their Naval career.

Sounds like someone wasn't a nuke or a reactor dept conventional. I would walk around during watch and pull my nuts out and yell "Its fucking nuts in here!" and usually one or all of my watch standers would do the same(or the female one would laugh her ass off). Pussy bitch.

Here you go OP. Don't forget to take advantage of the financial benefits that the military provides for you.

>>739101735

Airman here. USAF has a strong reputation for highest quality of life standards and preparing you for return to civilian life. It's not uncommon for people to enlist just for job experience and training and drop out in 4~6 years. (staring at ATCers that do 6 years then head out for that $100k a year job on the outside)

You won't see much of any action unless you join as a battlefield airman (TACP, Combat Controller, Parajumper). Shoot, a SSgt just came back in my shop and the worst he dealt with was occasional mortar attacks on his position. (he was working on one of our combat radars to give context)

As far as Navy goes, the only sailors I've known were my dad and father-in-law, and it was their opinions that drove me towards the Air Force. Both heavily blame USN for their failed marraiges. So don't go Navy if you plan on having a normal family? Sorry I can't give much context there.

If you have a hard on for combat and being some kind of hero, USAF isn't the way to go though. Go join Army or Marines.
>>
>>739107162
Also, Carriers get really sweet port calls. Just because they are nuclear powered doesn't mean we don't put them in cool places. Those are the SSBNs.

>>739108320
The USAF is a corporation, not a military branch. It can kindly go fuck off.
>>
You're gay Tony
>>
>>739097719
Make 110% sure that you know if the job you're going for requires a security clearance, and if so what, if any, documents you'll need during boot camp to take care of getting it.

Because my recruiter didn't tell me what I needed (my father's citizenship papers and my parent's marriage license) I couldn't get the documents in time and lost a $40,000 sign on bonus and had to switch rates.

does navy have any way to find out i was prescribed ritalin for a couple months like 6 years ago?

>>
>>739108439

Yea, we'll fuck off with our C5s that fly 24/7 to deliver supplies to everyone on the frontline and bring home your half blown up bodies. (every dead servicemember is brought through my base first with the utmost respect. I got to help transfer a few of the dead sailors from the recent accident not too long ago, actually)
>>

You wait till now to ask? You confirm my love opinion of those who join the military.
>>
>>739097719

>>
>>739097719
My friend did a year there.

He said it was a lot of bullshit. Like yeah there are things like the commercials, training and going to other countries all exciting and shit. And he said there is a ton of downtime. How he would work 12 hours shifts just sitting 'on patrol'.
>>
>>739108747
Rude.

Also your pilots can fuck off with their "not having a ground job" and "getting a van to the flight line" bullshit.

Naval aviation gives me salt.
>>
Go nuke.
>>
>>739109858
Second, did 7 years as one, hated my life, but worth it. I make 110k a year now with out a degree.
>>
>>739109218

Yea I've heard a lot of ground crew hates pilots those reasons. Since I work RAWS (Radar, Airfield, and Weather Systems), I'm far enough away from them that I never have had to deal with them (other than commanders which are almost always ex-pilots of some degree)

How is the nuke training now? I was in during the 90s. ET. A school attrition was >50% but unless we got in trouble pretty much everyone made it through power school. EM and MM were opposite. They all made it through A school but half o them failed out in power school. Still the same? We lost just as many through 'demonstrated unreliability' as we did for academics. But I heard it's not that way anymore. I was only during the draw down so they could afford to be picky.

>>739110368
Same. I'm the only manager in my district that doesn't have a university degree.
>>
>>739110907
I went through back in 2011-12 and I was an MMN, we had an attrition of about 10% in A school, 40% in Power School and 30% in prototype and then about 5% in the first year and a half in the fleet. Power school sucked for me, I was on 35-6's but prototype I was a fucking beast and was on staff hours after the first 4 weeks, and then 2 weeks after the off crew exam(I failed that bad).
>>
>>739108063
Seconding for NAS Jax. Mayport's pretty decent too.
>>
>>739111146
They were 35-5 when I was in. Lots of my friends were on them. I was always V or S-15 but I usually put in about 20 just doing my homework and studying the night before a test. That was the real key to the classroom success. Doing your own homework. I saw my friends on 35-5s passing around the homework to each other and then fucking off for 6 hours a night then failing tests.
>>
>>739110907
EM in last 3rd of powerschool. Most of the attrition is in a school, but they try to keep as many people in as possible.
>>
>>739110368
Why 7? That's an odd number to be in. Did you re-up after 3 or something?
>>
>>739111969
I did all my home work, but the what fucked me was I didn't do any of the required reading. The only subject that really was easy to me was the mechanical theory stuff, but most of that is stuff I can see or replicate easily.

>>739112409
Medically separated/retired after a high pressure air compressor blew up on me and got me good.
>>
>>739111983
They used to witch hunt people to kick out. NO second chances for anything. They used to tell us that they knew we had already gotten away with something that they hadn't found out about yet so we were coming in on our second chance. Underage drinking was a guaranteed ticket out. No exceptions. Lost a lot of people in Orlando due to underage drinking.
>>
>>739112824
You would be disappointed, underage and DUI you get a second chance now. Shit my power school class had 6 DUIs in one weekend, all kept and allowed to proceed.
>>
Expect bullshit but it teaches you self improvement and management. Remember, no matter how much work you put in, everyone graduates the same way.
>>
>>739099278
Please explain
>>
>>739111983
Being a nuke on a CVN it can be a good deal sometimes, but it depends on your Reactor Officer and CO, if they like nukes, you're golden like a shower. If they hate nukes, you will do all your nuke shit(training, drills, work) and then top side bullshit(training, drills and working parties). By the time we got a CO that was all about treating the nukes like the rest of the ship(except duty rotation), I was senior enough my CoC protected me from it.
>>
>>739097719
If you're antisocial and like being treated like a fucking dog, then go for it. If you have any emotions whatsoever, then they're going to break you. Also, a lot of homeless people are prior veterans. If you don't take care of yourself, and/or if you get coerced into doing hazardous tasks that may wind up damaging your health, then you risk compromising your future. They will psychologically beat you down, and brainwash you. You may even come out having learned to be hopeless. If you aren't comfortable with this prospect, then I strongly recommend you cancel on them. I was in the Navy for almost 8 years, and it definitely wasn't for me. You can roll the dice if you want to, but if the bad shit I've just described actually happens to you, then you'll have no choice but to deal with it. It's your call. I'd say that if you have any doubts about joining, then listen to your gut instinct.
