Sort of agree, though gays don't always act up for attention, it's a part of gay identity to be loud and proud and for some it's a safety mechanism (identifiability and acceptance as a minority by fitting a well-received stereotype). I do think there are genuine trans people out there (like the 50-something police officer I read about a few months ago), but so many that I know personally (which, admittedly, is only a few) have had mental illnesses and violently swinging senses of identity since prepuberty, and have basically self-diagnosed themselves from information found on the internet before seeking a genuine opinion (by which time they know what to say to "prove" they're trans). Psych-Major here. Will keep it short.

There still has to be more science done on GID. But from the look of the research out there, it seems like a genetic/neurological disorder, specific to the parts of the brain which have to do with identity.
Meaning, for all intents and purposes, transgenders have a brain with a different gender than their sex. They are born that way. (Because your gender identity is not a social construct.)
Think of it like albino. It's just a weird mutation that happens more or less regularly and that can be treated, but not healed.
(And even if it could be healed, I'd expect more conservative people to be the first to be skeptical about surgically manipulating peoples personality/identity.)
Also I have yet to see any research which points to it being a "psychological disorder", meaning resulting from something like trauma.

Now this is not to say that there aren't false self-identifications of non-cis-gendered. i.e.: There is a reason the rate of self-identified transsexuals among subcultures like "furries" are about 50x higher than the average population. So I remain skeptical about the 3429842346 genders, which supposedly exist.
Tho I suppose if things can go wrong neurologically to "switch" gender identities, people may exist who are missing that identification altogether. Either way, I strongly suspect there are many confused people in those subcultures.

And I'd like to mention how worried I am about striking GID/GD from diagnostic manuals. Essentially all this accomplishes is making it more difficult for transsexuals to get the treatments they need and want.
And it's catastrophic for research, which is already difficult as is. All because snowflake morons ironically stigmatize psychiatric disorders.
