Don't discount the AK for home defense if that's all you have, but beware that the 7.62x39 round will pass thru multiple interior walls and remain very lethal. A cheap $200 or $300 pump 12 gauge shotgun loaded up with #1 buckshot is a great home defense option. Simple, easy to use, cheap, readily available ammo, and deadly effective inside a home.

Not that anon but there are some good options for around 500 dollars. Usually if you just stick with trusted brand names like H&K, FN, Glock, S&W, etc you should be fine. Plus private sales of guns in the US are very common on websites like Armslist and Gunbroker, and if you go into any state that is even remotely rural or conservative, chances are the person selling to you wont ask for any ID. While I'll admit I probably made mistakes, I still don't know what I could have done differently other than not have the weapon, for which I went out of my way to make sure was perfectly legal in every way. If I hadn't drawn and the guy tackled me he could have got the damn thing, and then maybe I'm not making this post. My lawyer told me at the time that even if witnesses backed my story, since the guy wasn't armed, I still wasn't allowed to draw on him. I would have just shown it holstered if I'd had the chance, but it happened pretty quick. The only solution I've ever though of was just not having the gun, but if the guy had be intent on doing violence and I didn't have it, why did I bother buying it, registering it, getting the conceal carry license, so I could lock it up in a safe?
