Too many factors that none of you are considering. #1 would be what are the 2 sides. Liberals and republicans? Think people are going to make war on each other over social issues? I think people give too much credit to politics. It's nothing but a sport where people have picked a team and they cheer for it. Once they leave the stadium, it's business as usual. It's all make believe.

Other factors: who controls what. Things like access to food, water, natural resources will matter. Those things generally flow from the outside into the cities, not the other way around.

Other factors: the military. Chances are that the majority of soldiers are not going to agree to attacks on their fellow Americans unless there is a really good reason. "I don't like Trump" or any issues today would not suffice. Society would already have had to deteriorate to the point of anarchy for the majority of the military to commit to war against their homes, neighbors, etc. So expect mass defections.

Other factors: foreign intervention. This can be guaranteed. Foreign intervention, more specifically preventing it, was how Civil War I was won. Lincoln was losing, the threat of British coming in on the side of the Confederacy was looming, and so by issuing emancipation proclamation this prevented them from coming in against the US - brits would not fight a nation who has vowed to end slavery. Present day civil war you'd see the western allies coming in on the side of the US and Russia and their underlings coming in on the side of the rebellion, all positioning themselves for a post war period where they replace US as top dog. I've thought this through. It's more complicated than "hurrrr we have the guns" or "derrrrr the money is in the cities".
