I was at a gunstore i some podunk town in virginia and employees kept asking if they could help me. I kept telling them I was just browsing, but a minute later someone else would ask me. so I finally said "Yes, I'm looking for a Gyrojet" thinking I was going to stump the redneck.
He said "right over here" and lead me to a counter that had a Gyrojet in it. Marked $2100. I said "I'll take it if you can sell me 500 rounds to go with it".
Obviously I don't own a Gyrojet now.

>>738021427
I would personally go larger than a .22. I would get a .380 or subcompact 9mm. I started with a huge beretta like in OP's pic and I didn't always carry it because it's not always super appropriate to have a giant pistol on your side. I still have that gun but since I've bought a glock 43 which is a single stack subcompact 9mm. I conceal it and it's so comfortable I take it literally everywhere. The best gun is the one you have when shit goes down. You can never predict when a situation will come up. It happens when you least expect it.

I has a query. That top part that's slid back, that hoods the shell casing yeah? So when you fire it, the boolet shoots out the fixed barrel, while the blast also forces that sliding bit backward and ejects the casing and reloads the gun...

Wouldn't the booletz shoot farther if the charge detonated and all the force went into driving them forward, instead of driving part of the gun itself backward? Like, a cannon that has two open ends on it shouldnt shoot as far as one with only one open end for the explosion to come out, right?

What am I missing here, in this concept...

Just go for it man, .22lr is fun as hell to shoot plus ammo and usually the gun is really cheap. You can get all the basics of shooting down with a .22 and then move to more expensive guns.

>>738023021
sorry, I just disagree. I have been a gunsmith for about 35 years (I know everyone on here is right) But the very things that make the AK so reliable and inexpensive to produce are what limit its ability to be a truly accurate precision rifle.

Thing is built off a stamped sheet metal receiver with leaded rivets. That just isn't conducive to an accurate base.

And I don't mean it is incapable of hitting the broad side of a barn. Just it isn't going to be able to hold a sub half minute group without a lot of work.

and if you get that involved you are significantly changing what the gun was designed to be so you are left with something that really isn't an AK anymore.

Which leads me to feel like the money is better spent on a better base gun.

>>738023269

I also never said it was a trash gun, just that I like my AK's to be cheap, not thousands of dollars.

I own a century in 7.62x39 and an arsenal in 5.45x39, honestly you pay what you get.

The century nearly sliced my hand open when I took the dust cover off, had to give it a run with a file to remove the knife edge. Also, I know the century simply is not made to last and there's plenty of videos online illustrating this. I had to hit a few spots on the hammer face and the bolt to debur and smooth out imperfections. The half assed installed rivets with some of them not fully flush was annoying but Did this affect performance? Not really but it's something that stands out on sub $600 AKs.

The arsenal is pretty nice, this is how all AKs should be at $600 but this one cost me $1100. No canted sights, really nice stamped rivets and sheet metal parts and deburred edges. Trigger was nice and overall quality of machining was good.

I also own a Molot VEPR in x54r, this one is even better than the arsenal. It just screams quality control. It's so nice I feel bad shooting I and making it dirty. Still the VEPR was $900

I'm not talking about modified AK's
I'm talking about a "mil-spec" AK like an arsenal that is made the way it's supposed to be
No one cares about getting sub .5 MOA with their battle rifles anyway.
The acceptable level of accuracy for a rack-rate M4 in the military is 4 MOA

And I know you didn't say it's a trash gun, but at least respect it for what it can do when it's built PROPERLY

A quality AK, especially the 5.45 variant is capable of CONSISTENT 1.5 MOA groups with regular ammo
Obviously as a gunsmith, you don't care much about AK's because you don't have the training or inclination to work on them
You have the mindset that older guys have
Look up Jim Fuller of Rifle Dynamics
He's probably the best AK builder in America, because he understands it

also I apologize if anything I said seemed rude

Best thing to do is go to a gun store that has a shooting range and rent a handful of different handguns to try. Ask the guy behind the counter for advise and find the one that feels best.
>>
>>738024029
You don't need a permit to purchase a gun in PA. You need a concealed carry permit, but get that after you've gotten the gun.

Do you want a rifle, shotgun or handgun?
Are you wanting something for self defense, hunting, target shooting, all of the above?

What's a good first gun is a very broad question and really has a lot of variables. You need to take into account why you want the gun, what you want to do with it, how much you're willing to spend, etc.

When in doubt buy. I kinda pushed buying my VEPR but finally just did it anyways. Glad I did since it's a nice piece. If you find them online or in stores, just buy them, they don't disapoint.

I wish I had used the money I spent on the century to buy another Molot AK. But anyway, my century even with these issues, has never stopped firing.
>>
>>738024274
are you talking made by century, or imported by century? cause there's a big difference.
>>
>>738023908

>>738023940
I think you may be misinterpreting my original statement.

I was referring to people dropping cash on an AK to make it a precision rifle.

And I have quite a bit of training on an AK. I have also done a lot of work on them.

I don't like to think that I have an older style mentality but I guess maybe it is creeping in with each day that I do this.

Either way. The takeaway here is that I love the AK as a battle rifle. I don't really agree with the practice of some people dropping a ton of cash into modifying them to be precision shooters.

I guess I didn't make that clear in my original statement.

I believe that a high quality AK as someone described in an earlier post should be able to be made available at about a 600 dollar price point.
>>
>>738024220

Thanks for the info. Just moved here so I'm not very familiar with the gun laws.

I guess you'd say I want it for protection. Not that I'm worried about anything but I'd like to have one in the house if something happened. Was thinking just a handgun to start and then maybe build some sort of collection.

Yeah that's either a WASR or a SAR. Imported by Century and made 922r compliant. Reliable and well built.
The AKs that century makes are less reliable than the imports.

It's not meant for that at all

it's just the quality of machining is beyond shit.

Fins just stripped their mosins to bare parts and dropped their parts into buckets, then women were just sitting and pairing parts from buckets when they matched. Those first "hand matched" finnish mosins were still made from russian parts but were already 100 times better then anything in russia.

Finland produced mosins were top tier guns.

I like the idea...what they're trying to do, but I think it could have been executed a bit better.
I have a feeling that if they are successful and can stay in business for the next 10 or 15 years, they will get that whole barrel/suppressor assembly a bit more streamlined and less clunky.

1. It was produced as more of a recreational firearm that's more of a pleasure to shoot
2. You train with firearms you use for defense therefore you'd be shooting it more than just for an emergency
3. Less noise and blast will disorient the shooter less and allow xer to hear details and be able to communicate during and after the fight

Often subsonic ammunition is used in combination with a suppressor, but the suppressor itself doesn't effect muzzle velocity in any significant way. If anything, a suppressor will increase the muzzle velocity by a small amount.

This is a dissection of the Welrod's suppressor. The gas expands into each of those chambers in sequence, which reduces the pressure of the blast at the end. The Welrod also has 3 rubber seals which are punctured by the round the first time the gun is fired, which helps.
Welrod best gun, btw.
