The universe is all and everything that we know about. And it expands! So what does it expand out into? Does /b/ have a good answer?

Theres a good chance we're expanding into some kind of 4-dimensional space, given that if string theory is true, there are 11 dimensions

Nothingness yes, void no. Void is something.

Instead of thinking there's an outer edge that is moving outward, wrap your brain around the fact that other than where local stronger forces counteract it, space is expanding uniformly in all places within itself as well. Expansion is a property of the entirety of the universe, not just certain parts.
>>
>>737924278
So is there an edge?

I used to think we were in a globe within another globe. I know it sounds stupid but. I just can't imagine what's on the other side of the universe.

What if the universe is spinning, but it is spinning so fast that what is inside of it is moving away from the centre faster and faster? Of course there is no way for us to feel that motion and can only observe it somehow (just like we don't feel Earth's motion but can observe it)
>>
>>737924441
We may never know, as our information is limited by the speed of light. We can see a certain distance, meaning a certain amount of time backwards... but whether there is an edge or not, it is beyond our ability to perceive due to the speed of light.

Not just our perception, but since no information can propagate faster than the speed of light - it really makes no difference whether there physically is an edge or not, since it can't have an effect on us one way or the other.
>>
>>737920790

Imagine the universe is the surface of a balloon that's getting inflated. There's no edges it expands into, the entire space itself is expanding.
>>
>>737924691
I like to think of it as a loaf of banana nut bread. As it rises, it expands, and all nuts move apart from each other. Same thing, more 3D analogy.
>>
>>737924441
Yes and no. It's expanding faster than light, so you could never reach it. One interesting idea is that even if you could reach it, space just folds back on itself, so if you went fast enough to the edge you'd eventually end up back where you started.

Some nice short answers here. I am in fact a professor, but I'm not even a science professor... just a musician who has a nerdy streak.
>>
>>737924634
Yes I get observable vs actual... but at a basic logical level there are 2 conditions

universe has no leading edge implying it is infinite

or

universe has a leading edge to the expansion, implying... well lots of problems. It must have a centre if it has an edge... what is at the centre?
>>
>>737924796
Banana bread has a crusty edge where the tin was
>>
>>737924691
The surface of a balloon is planar
>>
>>737925064

"In reality, ALL of space was filled with energy right from the beginning. There was no center to the expansion, and no magical point from which matter hurtled outward. The confusion arises in part because of the amazing conclusion that the OBSERVABLE portion of the universe was once packed into an incredibly tiny volume. But that primordial pellet of matter and energy was NOT surrounded by empty space... it was surrounded by more matter and energy (which today is beyond the region we can observe.) In fact, if the whole universe is infinitely large now, then it was always infinite, including during the Big Bang as well." - from that link I posted

Its likely that the expanding wavefront of the big bang is actually making the universe, so its not expanding into anything its just creating as it goes along.
could that wavefront be god?
i for one welcome our new wave overlords.
>>
>>737925320
There's no math there, it's true, but as a thought experiment it's sound (to my untrained mind at least) - we can calculate that everything that we can see was once packed near-infinitely densely. We also know there's more that we can't see. Where was all that stuff?
>>
nothing but nothing is nothing so how can something expand in to nothing thefore it would be something it has to go somewhere but nothing is nowhere
?

>>737920790

>>737925117

When we say the universe is expanding, we're talking about the material parts of the universe. The galaxies. Those are all moving generally outwards from the centre of the universe, hence 'expansion' into, literally, space. The absence of matter.
>>
>>737925782

And we never will, since as far as we know information can't propagate faster than the speed of light. For all intents and purposes, the universe does have an edge... for us.
>>
>>737925489
Yes this explains the expansion, not much of that is contested. Is there a leading edge to the expansion? This implies a geometric sphere which implies a centre... which everyone seems to say is impossible because 'balloon' or 'raisin bread'. I say logic wont allow it to *not* have a centre... unless its infinite
>>
>>737925866
There is no center.

First there was nothing.

Twit

Show how time=space. Preferably in less that 100 words.. and in greentext
>>
>>737924542
well spherical is gravitates perfect form so it wouldn't surprise me if universes were spherical, that then leads onto multiverse theory
>>
>>737924691

That theory doesn't work. If you inflate a balloon in your room, it has space enough to expand, hence it expands out into the room. But if you inflate it inside of a small box, it wouldn't be able to expand at all. So the ballon (our universe) needs some kind of space to expand into.
>>
>>737927012
For the purpose of my equation, t will represent time and S will represent space

Not sure that even counts as one word in greentext

Accept my apologies Cosmology Master

>>
>>737927181
you're applying physics that don't apply in this scenario, our brains cant comprehend simply nothing. the universe is all and that's it, outside there inst existence. there is no before, there is no after, it just always has been. p.s i have a slightly educated guess but in all things have no fucking clue but i love to ponder
>>
>>737920790
it expands till it hits a neighbour universe.
then they merge.
but we will never see because at some point its expanding faster then light.
the further we look from our position the faster it expands.
we will also never see the edge of the universe because of that fact.
we will only see to the point where its expanding under the speed of light
>>
>>737927828
Another brain dead fuck, congrats.
>>
>>737925866
is matter creating time=?
>>
>>737928192
Fuck I know...could I have written that equation any more clearer? Fuckheads need to shut up about shit they don't understand
>>
>>737925881
Wrong. The universe stretches faster than the speed of light.
>>
It expands into nothing, but not the kind of nothing that exists in the space between bodies within our universe. Outside our universe is a more profound nothing, a vast absence, unpermeated by the fabric of spacetime and quantum foam. Actual nothingness.
>>
>>737926478
we say time is the fourth dimension because we live in a 4-dimensional universe and 3 of them are spatial and 1 is temporal (time)

These conversations make me happy for two reasons. First, you see that as far as cosmologies go, science relies as much on faith as religion. These are questions our species will not live long enough to answer, but we want answers, so we get 11 dimensions or a multiverse or the edge of the universe or no edge. Absolutely none of this can be proved, but people believe their theory anyway.
It also reminds me of the story of Georges Lemaitre who was the originator of the big bang theory. He was mocked as a hopeless creationist fucktard because 1) everyone at the time believed that the universe had already existed, and 2) he was a Jesuit priest. Einstein sneered at him. But he turned out to be right, to the dismay of anti-clerical neckbeards everywhere.
