Joined USAF as an air traffic controller. Going on 9 years but getting out after 10. Loved my first 7 years, absolute best time of my life. PCS'd to a bad facility with bad people, even worse morale, and people that criticize the most benign stupid shit every single day. I planned on 20 years because the job is awesome. But I just can't do this anymore.

Getting out to either go FAA, DoD, or work contract-facilities in Afghanistan for 200k/year as a civilian. Haven't decided. At this point, I'm willing to even take a far less-paying job just so I can be happy again and have some job-satisfaction for the first time in 2 years.

I already joined. Served 6 years and deployed once.

It's a good option for some people, and other have different avenues that will help them with whatever they want to do. Either way if fine. I don't bash on civilians, or other veterans. Whatever, everyone makes their choice, and who am I to judge?

Bashing on military people is dumb as fuck. Like...bashing on all police. Yeah, some of them may be annoying or arrogant or whatever, but who really gives a fuck? They are an asset to any society.

For me, I have income from my medical issues (which aint all that bad), paid college (going back for a history major), home loan assistance, kick ass military banking, and some cool other stuff. So the military was the right choice for me in the long run, for sure. But hey, I can only speak for myself.

A little over a year later, I tried to enlist in the Army to fly helicopters armed with statements from six dermatologists (four military and two civilian) saying there was no indication of psoriasis, and the doctors at MEPS still sent me home for the second time. Maybe I'm too resentful of certain types of authority. But when people abuse their power over me, I resent it badly. I had heart surgery as a child. I got a recruiting call when I was in high school. I shit you not it went down like this- the guy starts talking to me. I politely explain that I had a heart condition and what it was, that I knew it was disqualifying, and he actually got annoyed- "the least you could do is come in and get it checked out, we have doctors you could go see" (the nearest MEPS was 100+ miles away from my shit town). I said yeah, I'm not interested anyway, but I'm pretty sure my condition is disqualifying, as my doctors told me. At that point the guy said I had a "bad attitude" and was "acting like an asshole." I thought, "what does he expect to accomplish by this behavior? Am I going to say 'oh no, please let me come sign up now?'"

Anyway, that's as close as I ever got to the military. Sgt. Jackson, if you're on here, sorry I was an "asshole!" Hope you were able to sign up your quota that month so they didn't send you back to the motor pool in Kentucky or whatever shithole you were heading to.
