It's inconvenient as fuck compared to everything I want to do on Windows. Every time I've tried to use Linux, it fucks itself up somehow and then it takes hours to troubleshoot. OSX's UNIX compliancy is a joke. They heaped a lot of shekels on the UNIX committee.

Just look at their file system hierarchy. That's definitely not UNIX.

Also their file system is a joke:

>>
>>737151453
No, they don't.
I did a consulting gig to apprise the OT network of a water filtration plant in [redacted], and they called in a second guy so they could compare our findings. Standard procedure in a lot of places.

I have a surface, and a ibm thinkpad with arch linux for when I need to do real recon and analysis.

The other guy had an iPAD. It couldn't do fucking shit. He eventually said "well the iPAD isn't gonna work again today so...we'll go with this guy" and pulled out some HP laptop with windows on it.

Mac isn't used in the professional world that actually matters. Too insecure, too locked down, its' feature parity to windows and linux is poor, and they cost a shitload more thanks to the proprietary ecosystem.

anons pls help a lonely fella.
I discovered linux with OpenSUSE when you had to install it with several CDs. I've got a copy of Mandrake which is older but the thought of partitioning the HD scared me back then.
I remember i was amazed at the shiny, glossy, glittery buttons here and there. sure it wasn't easy and the profanities I've said when setting up pulseaudio were many.
now I mostly use #! on a eee 1015px and on a rescued 6yo Dell Latitude that i wanted to use as a base for a Wah!cade retro cabinet.
the problem is... I've lost the excitement, the feeling of joy in looking for new software in the repositories, everything is tasteless. probably after I've burned two nvidias on two laptops, i started to question my faith in the open source community. why? what can i do? should i go back from laptops to "real" pc? where can o find satisfaction in amateur linux-ing again?

I'd avoid these, they tend to be able to run one distro with proprietary drivers and upgrading with hardware support is a fucking hassle

sure, but stick to the big names for the same reason above. a raspberry pi is going to get much better support long term than a smaller-run arm board.
>>
>>737156071
I'm not defending Winblows, I'm just saying that I don't think Adobe isn't specifically tailoring PS for Mac any more than they work with M$ to keep PS working well on Winblows.

Winblows is insanely bloated. Mac doesn't have nearly the same degree of bloat, they merely have mediocre GPU drivers. But it really doesn't take a bad ass machine to run PS well-- you just need enough RAM and some kind of GPU.

You have very good advice for the new user.
>TV boxes one distro, proprietary drivers
I tend not to collect distros all that widely, so I pretty much just use Armbian's compatibility list as a buying guide.
>support
>long-term
Armbian has been doing quite a bit of sometimes thankless work to get the Allwinner chips and their peripherals supported in mainline Linux, with not very much help from the chip vendor. I heard some of the TI and Amlogic chips and boards do have nice mainline support too.

>>737156700
Many Linux distros install the open source drivers by default. If you don't want to invest much time in it, you could install the latest vendor drivers and call it a day. That's what I did.

Windows 10 is absolute shit. The OS itself is malware. They even use the classic malware trick of making the X out button into the "I agree" button. You don't even have the option of deciding what you want your computer to do, updates are forced on you, they fuck with your computer all the time and just fuck the whole shit up.

That's it.

I don't even know where the fuck to begin... What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. You think because you get to sit in your warm homes on a computer that you can just joke about horrible things like this? What the actual fuck is wrong with you guys? Sick fucks, doing this shit does fucking nothing. So you want to come on an imageboard to be an asshole about things like this? Let me tell you guys, you are all fucking weak. You would never be useful to the world with such behavior you present. Honestly why do people like you guys even exist? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I've been using Linux since 2011, I think. I started with Ubuntu, but eventually I settled on Mint.

I switched from Windows XP because I was sick of getting viruses, regardless of what AV I was running or what websites I visited.

Eventually, I wrote my grad school thesis using Libre Office. Turning in my thesis required making a pdf with rich formatting that would've required shelling out hella dollar$ on Windows or Mac OS, but was completely free with open source software.

More recently, I compiled Ardour from source code because I needed a DAW and the idea of paying a subscription fee seemed literally retarded. I've had no problems recording, editing, mixing, or mastering songs in my spare time.

Switching to Linux was the best decision I've
ever made. Only a fool would pay a premium for an operating system.

pic unrelated.

I've been using Linux since I was about 12, before that I had only ever used WIndows XP/7, I used Linux on and off for years, upgrading from 7-8-8 Pro and now 10 Pro. But I became more concerned with my security after realizing the implications of proprietary software vs. open source.

Now I only use Linux, although I do have 10 Pro installed, I mostly only use it for FL Studio etc., I'm hoping that since Steam added Linux support more companies will, especially with the recent ransomware attacks against Windows.

If I could go back 10 years and say I told you so, I would.

Steam works for Linux, I don't care too much about the ones only available for Windows, because they're the types of games generally available for consoles.

>Some of us want to spend time outside of troubleshooting shit that doesn't work for an OS that only works as well as windows.

I've been using Mint for the last three years on my msi "gaming" laptop and I've never had to troubleshoot anything. Everything I've ever wanted to do just works thanks to the ingenuity of the coders over at Mint. Your argument is invalid; neck yourself, mate.
