No. But yes.

Probably.

The internet was not regulated then.

Yes. People weren't fearful and politically correct idiots.

The 90's were the afterglow of the 80's. The 80's were great, for a great many reasons but in particular because electronic entertainment took off big time.

The internet only really kicked off at the end of the 90's, coinciding with the dot-com bubble, so it's not like the 90's were a magical fairyland of the internet. During most of the 90's, the internet were BBS's, Newsgroups and that wonderful new technology called "e-mail", which computer magazines would helpfully explain stood for "electronic mail"
>>
80s were way better, but the 90s were cool, except towards the end as it started to lay the groundwork for the faggotry that is now.

Great music. Cool fashion. Just enough tech. People still talked face to face or on the phone. The world wasn't as fucked.

I was a kid in the 80's. My first half of the 90's were amazing and super sad at the same time and what followed until today is a flat, tasteless everybody life.

It's not the decade that's important, it's where you are in your way.

end of 60's and 70's must have rocked tho. Everything comes from then.
>>
>>737104599
>>737104707

The 90s weren't all that while in it. Obviously, the highlights of the 90s were mentioned already, and reflecting on the 90s definitely seem better than today.
>>
>>737105051
My first interaction with the internet as we know it now was around 92, I was in school and there was an English kid that was way into computers, so when we went over to his place of course he would show us this wonderful technology by showing us German Shit Porn. I still remember him telling me yeah type in www.***.com, and I was WTF is that.

So in the beginning the internet was awesome, cause you could e-mail and actually get information without having to go the library or whipping out your Encyclopedia Britannica(dam wish I still had my set, leather bound, gold leaf).

The demise of people has truly been social media, it's made a generation of retards that cannot deal with true social situation. If I wanted to break up with a girl, I had to face her and tell her, and deal with all the shit that came with my decision. Now you fags just send a text or a fucking emoji and change your relationship status.

If you made plans with friends, people actually showed up and stuck to their word, all that shit is out the door now.

Eh. No one had the internet.

We didn't get internet until like 2000... Even then it was on a disc.

No social media... Ya had answering machines...

Cocaine was significantly cheaper too. Same with smack

I wish you could break up by emoji. I guess if you have a broken heart that would work.

>>737105705
yeah, i remember going up to girl's front doors, knocking and that was the gamble. whoever answered you had to deal with.
the polite way was to ask if they're home and then if you can talk to them.

i wonder if this shit even happens anymore. you had to actually have balls as a kid back then, but parents were a lot more relaxed i think, especially in nice neighborhoods because people were used to kids always playing outside, not being inside on gadgets.
>>
>>737105951
almost as old. music in the 90s was better and it was past cold war. the future looked great feom back then
>>
The past always seems better because today's old were younger then, and popular culture only retains and repeats the good things while dumping and burying the mediocre shit. People are hugely biased in favor of the past. Having said that, social media has really poisoned public discourse and damaged normal social norms beyond repair.

>>
>>737104599
If it wasn't for this decade, the 90s might have been the most shit since WWII.
>>
Graduated in 98...the 90's was the greatest decade ever- the music, the freedom, the complete lack of political correctness- it was great.

I can remember stealing lunch trays and going sled riding the courtyard at school during winter months or just wandering the halls while eating because nobody gave a shit what you did knowing that we weren't there to sell heroin or vandalize anything and random asshats weren't going to walk into the school and start shooting. Now the entire school is on lockdown with guards and shit.

The 90's gave birth to an entire genre and style of music that will never be heard from again as most of the major talents have left us. Now the new thing is "techno" mixes that anyone with an amount of free time and no vocal talent can make. It's a shame.

The best parts of the 90s had nothing to do with why the 90s are popular today. The music was largely crap with possible exception of the hardcore/punk/grunge/hiphop scene, the fashion was absolutely abhorrent and anyone who says otherwise is invariably an overweight aging nirvana fangirl who still rocks ripped sublime T-shirts at age 37.

What was prime in the 90s was the hacker/phreaker/cyberpunk sort of scene. There were legitimately places like in the movie 'hackers' where people played dank primitive 3d games with maximum AESTHETIC VALUE on big-screen projectors with thumping sound systems in dark unofficial warehouse parties, albeit lacking the Angelina Jolie factor. Analog phone switching still existed and could be exploited for maximum fun. Nobody knew what the interdick was, BBS's were still a thing, you made friends on IRC, you had a safe space for your turbonerd lust that could never be tainted by summerfags or retarded Chads because they didn't have a modem or the phone number to your cool little microcosm of the interweb.

yes, that decade was highly experimental that opened people's mind about technology, entertainment, music, art, more than any other period. People did not live in a echo chamber, socializing and getting together was a major thing; however, every thing crashed down on 9-11. I can guarantee you that from 2001 on, everything changed drastically.

I think I agree with this.
It seems like everything got really fucked after 9-11. Everything seemed shittier, more restrictive, less happy, less social.
I was only in middle school when 9-11 happened. But fuck, you're right. It seemed like everything really started to suck after that.

Fucking idiot. Life itself was much better than anything the goddamn internet has to offer. The internet in your hand all the fucking time has DESTROYED EVERYTHING. Just this morning i saw a family walking single file down the sidewalk. the mom the dad and the kid were all staring directly at their phones as they walked. Together but nowhere near each other. smart phones have destroyed society as it was and the isolation is going to ruin all life on earth in 15 years time. fuck off with your fucking digital addictions your fucking nerdmonger. life was so much fucking better when we talked face to face and sat on the front porch and ate apples together that we cut pieces off with our pocket knives and grandma told us stories and gossip. FUCK THE INTERNET LIFESTYLE.

Yup. I was either stoned to the bejesus or drunj as hell the entire decde and still made a shit ton of money. The internet was in its halcyon days and social media was not the center of our existence. Gibson and Fender were making quality guitars and grunge felt new and exciting.
>>
>tfw you lived your teen years in the full-boom of 90s culture

It was probably the last era that had its own identity. Everything since then has been rehash/reboot/repackage.

It's why I simultaneously feel contempt yet pity for Millennials, since pretty much everything they think is so "uberkewl" in their pop culture is just recycled, regurgitated shit from the 60s/70s/80s/90s. Even thier "muh hedonism/muh No God" shit is nothing new.

The 90s tried way too hard to be the 60s part II. The 60s were great and all, but there was way too much missed opportunity in cashing in on all that social revolution, plus it wasn't controlled by the right people. The 90s was meant to fix those flaws, and we'll the decade ultimately sucked because of it.
>>
>>737106665
There was PC bullshit even back then just not as bad as now. I remember people taking about what to call black people, this is when they started getting called African American. Also Filipinos started getting called dark nips.

not really artist specific. I dislike that electronic pop, that made up mainstream 80s music and new wave also. rock and metal were pretty much continuous from the 70s and while there was some new stuff, that was called indie of which there seemed to be more in the 90s. Also grunge was something new.

But to name one outstanding musical memory: I'll never forget Third Eye Blind debut record.

>>
>>737106145

This was only true up to a point when talking about the pop culture of the last century of so. Every era before like 2000 had it's own distinct flavor. The mess that came afterwards has been nothing but a lazy reboot culture, fueled by the junkfood tabloid nature of the internet, on which everyone is hopelessly plugged into.

I don't look back fondly on any of my parent's "eras" with any degree of fondness, but I sure as hell recognize they truly had their own thing/style/etc. going.
>>
>>737107109
Racial tensions were high in the 90s.

Just because you weren't privy to it does not mean it wasn't there. 92 was the year of the LA riots, sparked by the beating of Rodney king being filmed, and the police who did it got no punishment. Shit was rough for black people, and still is.

>>737106575
The "90's" era actually ended some time in early 1999. Can't really explain it. You just had to be there. There was a definite shift that was felt, particularly in music, when all the innovation of the decade was suddenly overtaken with a boom of bubblegum pop and the dawn of "numetal." Between that time and 9/11 the world was already becoming different. 9/11 just tipped everything down the shithole.

you can make the same argument about cars, in the last 60 years they helped creating suburbia with gated community which isolated people physically and psychologically from the rest of the world. And what people in the suburb do all day: discharge their firearms, watch TV all day, drive to the closest grease-pit to get fat, while at the same overdosing on antidepressant to fight their own depression born out of this isolation.
Internet and smartphone are just a consequence of this isolation in order to reach people away from urban centers. If you consume trash over the internet it's just as bad as reading tabloid papers.

This, it's too true.

Having the internet everywhere we go and people being constantly plugged into each other all the time is just too much power for the average person. They don't know how to use it responsibly. Now people use it to essentially constantly access only the pleasantries they like and put blinders on to everything they don't like.

Bored in a room full of people?
>Get on your phone and talk to Facebook and Twitter friends that are also bored surrounded by others

Sitting next to a stranger?
>Get on your phone and ignore them so it's not awkward

Spending time with your family but you'd rather be with your friends?
>Your phone can solve That!

Sheesh, the future is getting worse.
>>
>>737107439
Not at all. It's why you can say things like

>60's fashion
>70's fashion
>80's fashion
>90's fashion

And each thing conjures up a very distinct look in one's mind. Same thing with the music of each time. Everything afterwards has been nothing but a hodepodge mashup and reboot of those previous 50 or so years. Each previous era had its own soul and style. The last almost 2 decades has been a soulless repackaging of better times.

It was the last decade of innocence for many...before 9/11. At the start of the 90's there was Glasnost, the Berlin wall had just come down, the USSR was breaking apart and seemed to be moving away from the Communist dictatorship model of government. The Cold War was essentially over, and many breathed a sigh of relief. Bad things happened, but not on the same scale as what came after the 90s.

- Video games didn't pander to "the wider audience" and were actually focused on gameplay

Since you got your asses wide open and are still feared as hell about that .. I think the mission was a success.

I was a little bit disappointed by the way America pissed itself these days. You have a history not much more peaceful than Germany and you did things, even Hitler would not have done.
But the moment some faggots killed a few thousand people, which is less than die on your highways in a month, btw, in that moment you turned into cry babies.
Face it, America is not used to have war on its front door anymore. And that's a problem. Who the fuck else but 'Murica has at least the potential to keep things balanced in the world?

The 90s were what I like to call "the extreme age". I was born in 81 so I got to see the 80s too. The 80s was basically /pol/s wet dream. Republicans everywhere, greed is good, capitalism rah rah rah.

Then things started to get weird with music getting all androgynous and with lots and lots of drugs.

Also it was the golden age of video games and movies.

The 90s rolled around with a complete opposite swing of the 80s. Comic books became extreme, music switched from things like hall and Oats and Humpty to Marylin Manson and Gangsta rap. TV shows also became extreme with things like Beavis and Butthead and extreme wrestling.

Were the 90s that great? It all depends on if you liked that extreme view. The 90s is when the internet started to take real form and social media came around. It's about the time when people started to retreat into their tech bubble.

Also the 90s paved the way to the crazy bullshit we have now with SJW bullshit and BLM craziness. Hell we have video proof of 5 or 6 cops beating the black off a negro named Rodny King and all we got from that was a few months of protest and riots. And that was a clear case of the police being in the wrong. Now if a cop bruises a thug piece of shit who has a gun pointed at his head we get a year of HE DINDU NUFFIN!

So take it how you will. I prefer the 80s.

We (the U.S.) weren't tangled up in endless, futile wars in the Middle-East (not overtly, anyway), the music was pretty damned great, the only people trying to police speech were right wing evangelicals who could be laughed off, and the internet was a total wild west.

So yeah, the 90's were pretty cool. But hey, there's a lot of cool shit today. Just gotta enjoy it all before some sub-human muslim whose kids got blown up in a hospital detonates a suicide vest at a concert and blows your legs off.

Yes they were. I went to college in the mid-90s, and I can tell you that even if they weren't quite as insane as today (because older, saner folks were still in charge of the departments then and wouldn't allow it), you could tell it was coming.
Every bit of SJW insanity that has happened since then I had already learned about from the then-Princess or Captain Moonbeam, Grad Student TA. Now 20 years later, those old TAs are now Professor Princess or Captain Moonbeam, PhD. They're tenured m and some of them are even running their own departments. They're still letting their freak flag fly loud and proud just as before, only now they have both underlings and nobody above them to hold them back.

>Everything seemed shittier, more restrictive, less happy, less social.
People were told they were targets, the terrorists were out to get them, be ready, be prepared, look around you.

This kind of paranoia ends up having a negative effect on people. I'm not saying hey if you see a dude leave a heavy backpack behind and start running don't do anything but they took it too far.

Agree that there was a major 60s & 70s retro tone to the 90s. I disagree though that this was at cause for anything; the 90s didn't suck, and any ducky part about the 90s had little to do with a retro orientation

We got RoadRunner through TWC in 1994, right when I started really going through puberty hard. It was ~128k speed. Downloading anything was impossible, though, because HDD were TINY. So I just beat it to pictures all day.

Doom II just about filled up the entire hard drive.

Good times though :)

Thanks, Dad, for all of the free porn I could ever hope to find!

Yes. We had just won the Cold War, kicked ass and left Iraq. We were the sole superpower. We had a surplus in the budget. Video games were advancing rapidly. Kids could play outside. Movies were actually funny. It was an exciting time. The 90's were better meme is not really a meme. Shit has been depressing, boring, and very derivative since 9/11.

That's when you know you are getting "over the hill" or to that "mid life crisis" point, when you don't understand today's youth and trends and think it's unoriginal and based rehashed shit you called original for your time. You have basically become your own parent.

You are right about this. There was something magical about Saturday morning cartoons. That shit is lost to time now.

No modern trends really are just a boring rehash of the early 90's, I was there and saw these trends when they were cool the first fucking time. Stop being such a youngfag and fuck off to one of your fap threads.

All within the first few posts, got it covered.

Since I grew up in the 80/90s my experience was that we got alot more Sophisticated but at the same time things were still "normal"

Internet was a rare thing, computers were even kinda rare - even in offices sometimes people were still using typewriters and copy machines and alot of paperwork.

TV was getting more sophisticated and that was pretty fun and exciting, the weather channel was almost hypnotic, old people frequently had screen-burn-in from CSPAN and TWC.

But you still flipped through ~50 channels, you still rented and watched video tapes.

Malls were in their *Prime* buddy. Being at the mall was the shit. And the only reason the chimps started showing up at the malls in the '00s was because there were fewer people there due to online ordering.

Compared to the 80s this added sophistication made the 90s a really interesting time to be around. In a word it was simply perfect.

But people were still doing the "same things" that they always did. There were older folks who had nothing to do with tech. Kids could still go out to the playground and play with sticks, go out in the woods and make believe and all that sorta thing.

There were older folks who had nothing to do with tech. You could have a house with no TV or internet, just a Radio and maybe a land line phone and probably get by if that was your thing, people might think you were a little slow on the uptake but it was still a thing. Simple pleasures, people talking to each other, boozing and getting fucked.

Based on what I remember about the trendy kids, the patrician lifestyle revolved around Sports and Fashion (clothes). Reinforced by the likes of Adam Sandler, Michael Jordan and Shaq.

I (guess) you could still be trendy now following the same equation but it feels like it'd only get you halfway there.

Back in the late 80's Nickelodeon was the greatest thing on television. It was fucking awesome. Saturday morning cartoons were fucking great on MAJOR NETWORKS. I used to watch Bugs Bunny on ABC/CBS. TMNT. The Mario Bros. Show, where every friday it was a Legend Of Zelda cartoon.

Friday night was Pizza night. Goddamn my life was great as a kid.
>>
>>737108922

The funny thing is that every generation says something like this. The only difference is that for the Millenials, it's tech.
>>
My feeble mind remembers the '60's as the beginning of experimentation and questioning authority. The '70's was the mellow, cool decade. The '80's were the yuppie/money decade. The '90's was the hot pink/corporate decade, people looking for their freedom and not finding it. But I'm an oldfag, what do I know?
>>
>>737111452
And what you thought was unique 90's grunge was a "rehash" of the late 70's punk and rock, sad that you can't even realize your own argument against you. Also, I'm swimming in pussy right now and I bet smells much better than the skanky chicks you bagged.

>>
Early 90s were really the peak. I had my rat tail and puffy pants.
>>
No.

I have lots of nostalgia for the decade, but it's no better or worse than today, just different. Consider this: in the 90s, when we were all kids, our parents bitched about how horrible it all was, and most of us probably said wed never act like that.

It's ridiculous to me; people who grew up in the fucking 60s bitch about how today is somehow so out of control. Get in touch with reality plz

Theres some quote out there that goes "Things always get better while ppl claim things are getting worse." That's my thoughts on it. Enjoy the present and stop with the membering

Punk and grunge had opposite messages. Punk wanted change, grunge was apathetic. Plus punk was the same rebellious movement as rock n roll.
>>
>>737111726
It's not the tech, it's their "world owes me a living" attitudes. Back in the 80's-90's if I spoke to an adult the way these edgy little punks do I'd get a good backhand, can't do that now OR spank kids so they're all mouthy, inconsiderate little douchebags with an unrealistic sense of entitlement.

(contd)

Yeah I agree the thing about Alternative/Grunge music is that it just had so much LIFE in it despite it being dark.

It wasn't the kind of music you dance to, but at the same time it just fills you with energy. It was otherworldly
> and as anon explained, those music talents have left back for that other world

>>737106387
All those influences still existed, the global warming people and the sjws and the feminists but Nobody Put Up With Them.

Now it seems like they're "protected" for some reason. Even though the laws haven't changed. Its kinda strange, cant quite put my finger on why these people are allowed so much breathing room.

Then again its also a factor of more people being open to listening to them. Maybe its like an exponential growth function that always appeared small before from the 60s-00s but then started reaching a higher peak in the last 10 years.

>>737106525
I was in my pre-teen/teens back then and I remember calling up BBS on my shitty 386. It was pretty neat and I got some stuff off of it that was fun that I would've had to order out of a catalog otherwise.

My teen fantasy was finding goth chicks who would be "in tune" with themselves and have no problem recognizing the value in me (and us getting together and fucking like crazy). But for some reason in my area they were rare.

Without dating sites or social networking you couldn't rely on finding people of Eccentric Interests because there were few ways to get people like that together. That sucked pretty bad.

> wanna find activities for people with eccentric interests?
> that doesn't happen, the underground scene is underground for a reason - its hard to link up with because you've got to know the right people

Bible thumping was also still a big thing, anything from alternative culture was railed against as the devil's work in some way even though (to me) it felt like it had more life in it.

Its much less of a thing now.

I don't doubt that kids 'break up' over text (If you can even call it a relationship) but adults don't, because that's looked down upon.
