You have 10 seconds to name a better composition than Holst's 'The Planets' (especially movement 1, 'Mars, The Bringer of War')

But I'll give your little space jam a listen because Mars: Bringer of War sounds pretty badass.

They still can't compete with Holst, sorry.

Moonlight Sonata is a good piece (though I really only like Mvt. 3) but it doesn't compete with Holst's piece.

>>
>>737077291
here's an easy one: the 4th movement of Beethoven's 9th symphony. Don't even try to argue against it.
>>
>>737081177
Große Fugue is better
>>
>>737080815
>>737081177
OP here. While most of these come close (some may even tie) I don't think any of these are 'better' than Holst's The Planets. Nice try.
>>
>>737077291
Jupiter is better than Mars just saying
>>
>>737081256
Grosse Fuge is great but the 4th movement of the 9th is arguably the greatest piece of music ever composed. The Great Fugue is angry, complex, intense. 4th movement of the 9th is equally intense, but in a overwhelmingly joyous manner. I don't even think the 2 pieces are even comporable, they're so different in tone and mood and purpose.

Xenakis is good but come on dude. I'm not even OP but that's a pretty absurd statement.
>>
>>737081416
And Mozart's Jupiter Symphony (No. 41) is better than Holst.

>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9OBf8f55tU

I think everyone here can agree on this.
>>
>>737081868
Glass' larger scale works are all great but I find his most compelling music to be written for the Philip Glass Ensemble. Music in 12 Parts, Einstein on the Beach, Koyaanisqatsi. best parts from those pieces are Part 8, Train, and the Grid, respectively.
>>
>>737081868
Agree 100%, or Einstein
>>
>>737081740
He's good, but to 99% of the public he's just the Ode to Joy, and they've never heard most of the pieces in this thread. So I'd agree he's overrated. While he's one of the best, he's not the only one.
>>
>>737082106
Einstein is excellent. Night Train, Train, Spaceship, all perfect. Hard for me to choose my favorite section, although it's probably Train
>>
>>737082186
I don't disagree with anything you've said. He's overrated by the general public in that the general public probably only knows him, Bach, and Mozart, and maybe Tchaikovsky because they've heard the Nutcracker.

yes, probably, especially the 2nd movement

>>737082088

>>
>>737079943
I disagree, but you are indeed entitled to your opinion.
>>
>>737077291
Now, don't get me wrong, Holst's Planets Suite Op. 52 is easily too 5 of any compositional list, but I think Shastakovich's Symphony No. 7: Leningrad, and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite should have some bearing in the race ahead.
>>
>>737082463
When it's all said and done Bach probably is the greatest of all time, with Beethoven not far behind
>>
>>737082088
Yes, I can agree. every movement is brilliant but this is probably the best.

Yeah, I agree that there's something interesting about those "artsy" or "philosophy" pieces, but I can't take it seriously as music for listening.

That's my exact problem with Cage, it's just not enjoyable to listen to. I'm sure it has artistic value but if it's unbearable to listen to what's the fucking point. Like, Steve Reich is one of my favorite composers, but even I can acknowledge that Four Organs is basically unlistenable. having artistic and creative value does not a good piece make

I absolutely think that two steps from hell fits in here. They write epic trailer music which doesn't count as classical, but trailer, film, and games music really are the only way that orchestra live on today in a grand sense.
In the same way that classical musicians wrote for opera and theatre, todays film musicians provide a modern day equivalent
>>
>>737084132
Exactly. A lot of my favorite pieces are focused on demonstrating new music theories, but Cage just completely disregards the idea that music should be enjoyed
