You have 10 seconds to name a better composition than Holst's 'The Planets, Op. 32: Mars, the Bringer of War'
>pro-tip, you can't
>>736980732
No argument from me. The Planets is by FAR the best musical piece ever written IMO. My favourite movement is Saturn, although my favourite part in the piece is when the cellos and strings take over the melody halfway through Jupiter. Makes me tear up every time.

1812 overture simply for it's wonderful sound as a driving piece of music however I must give credit, the planets are an amazing piece

Just finished listening to the whole piece. I was aight.
Stravinsky's rite of spring and sinding's rustle of spring contend. And while someone mentioned beethovens 9th I personally prefer the 6th. That and the 7th are monumental as well

Lol, what the fuck is going on. I've been going to some orchestration study sessions put on by a film scoring organization and have been volunteering with renotating the entire score. Pic related.
What a fucking coincidence for Holst, of all people, to pop up on /b/
I love this piece, but there is a shitload of excellent music out there. Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe for example is pretty superb as well.

Most of the pieces posted in this thread are great. The rest of the movements from The Planets are great, too. Dvorak, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Sibelius, Mussorgsky, Strauss, Mendelssohn, Elgar, Saint Saens are all fantastic, too. I enjoyed Holsts First Suite in Eb and Second Suite in F much more than the Planets. If we're still on the topic of Holst, "Ode to Death" is one of my favorites.
But as a Euphonium and Tuba player working on a music major I prefer the first two things to play just because they're easier to work with a large wind band with no strings or choir.
