I'm going to go against the grain and tell you different advice. I'm 23, been a heavy drinker since I was 15,16. I never liked beer. It was bitter, unenjoyable, flat, etc. The bubbles made it hard to taste the difference in flavours, etc.

I'm gonna say don't force it. I just last year had my first full bottle of beer, and its been easier since. Its an acquired taste for some and eventually it might be easier. If not so what. Learn to love and drink whiskey neat and no one will consider you a pussy.

When you do start, start with light beer. Like, Corona, San Miguel, Heineken. Even Bud light or Coors/Molson if you're Canadian. It will be easier to gulp down.

In beer, more hops mean more flavour and more bitterness. This is nice when you already like beer but for the non drinker can make it worse.

Give it time and enjoy drinking for now.

Don't worry about being a pussy. When I started drinking I was really only into vodka and rum and such. Beer was an acquired taste for me too and I'm still particular about what I drink, on the few occasions that I drink. If you want to acquire a taste for beer I would say to start with shandies (the summer shandies by Linenkugel and Sam Adams are a good start) and white ales and work your way into ambers, reds, and browns and eventually certain stouts will be good too. I don't like hoppy stuff so I stay away from pale ales and coffee flavored beers (which I think brings out the bitter flavors).
