I'm a 22 year old Controls Engineer making $53k a year without having any sort of Degree. I made the decision when I was 12 that I wanted to work as an engineer in industrial automation, set my will to it, and worked hard. There are plenty of other people my age doing a lot better than me even...So the question is, why are you such a skill-less underperforming faggot?

The question is why you think 50k is impressive. Im a junior software engineer. I sit in an air condotioned cube getting paid 80k a year, full health/dental, 3 weeks vacation, 10 days sick time, a 401 (k) woth a 5% match, and i literally graduated school less than 6 months ago.

I'm a 27 year old Building Engineer making $58k a year without having any sort of Degree. I made the decision when I was 23 and had washed up in my first career that I wanted to enter the trades, set a marginal amount of my brain power to it, and worked the bare minimum amount necessary to impress my bosses at least once per week at a staff meeting or someshit. There are plenty of other people my age (obviously) doing a lot better than me even...So the question is, why haven't I become an hero?

Good start.
I can electrically install and program automated equipment. I can design, manufacture/fabricate all parts needed mechanically, install them, commission the assembly, and troubleshoot problems.... this after 20yrs of trade experience.

Siemens PLC's are good hardware, but the interface blows. After weighing platforms, we're using Rockwell for our upgrade (about $4 million project, or so). They have their issues too, but they're easier issues.

You have the skills, now find the job that pays you for them. Or not. If you enjoy where you work, that's worth a lot too. I could be making ~250k in power generation. I choose to have low stress and cool shit to play with.

merely credibility and the ability to prove your "education"

it's funny, because you're right, and this has been the truth for as long as computers have been around, because colleges have been lagging in the industry. vocational schools and self-taught seem to be much more efficient, given that people want experience more than a fancy degree.

Jump on every opportunity and don't be afraid to fuck people over for the better deal. Don't make coworkers in to friends, friends are for outside of work. If they become your friends you'll hesitate when its time to jump. You miss that jump, and that opportunity could be lost forever.

I am scared of money.

Not in the meme sense of muh capitalism is bad but I grew up in relatively poor conditions, but I was happy because I had my sisters, my mom and dad and we were all really close.

When my dads work place shut down he decided to open his own firm and within a few years we suddenly were very wealthy, and it was awesome, got all the newest phoned, sneakers etc.
However I didnt realize how far I drifted away from my fam and especially my dad, he worked so much that I barely got to see him.

He also had problems showing his affection, I had and still dont have any doubts that he loves me, but he always showed it with money. Did good in school? Have a fifty. Bad day? Have a hundred.

After I moved out I realized how bad it got, we could barely hold a conversation without it getting awkward. What happened to the dad that played soccer with me in the rain? The one that watched cartoons with me all night when I was sick? All this got replaced by money and now its all we have we can share.

Money does not make you happy, a fullfilling job might of course bring you joy, but money has no real value when it comes down to it. The shiny Mercedez is gonna get boring in a month, that rolex will be out of your mind within an hour. I cant remember the last time I got something that I still am even slightly excited about.

I wonder how many rich people die with extreme regrets in regards to their priorities in live (generalization I know)

I am just a nofun NEET, who knows.

Amazingly enough, employers like to hire people that show they will work. They won't come rescue you. They want to pay someone to help get shit done.

Do a bunch of shit, then eventually, one of those things will be pretty cool. And, you'll probably stick with it.

I've made 60k a year since I was 22 and by 27 was making 80k working 10 days a month as a firefighter paramedic at a fire district in an upscale suburb. I am 29 now have a 50k truck with 30,000 miles on it I paid off a 300k house I owe 120k left on. You're not special. I don't think I am either but I don't go around acting grandiose over making an amount of money pretty much anyone could make or more working in a manual labor/union trade job. I bet by 40 you'll be buried in debt and ready to blow your head off because you'll fuck some hoes thinking your a baller and the money grubbing sluts will shit out your spawns and atop of funding their child support every month you'll be having to work a dead end job just to stay above water because you've blown all your money trying to keep up with the Joneses you self-identity joke. Here's an idea. Get debt free and find a girl who supports your pursuit of happiness so you can work any job you want because you love it not because you have to make x amount and work til 65 to pay off your debts you stupid millennial fuck. It ashames me I'm young enough to be considered part of your generation.

I could get 70 pretty easy now if I were to switch companies. I am past the 5 year mark of Industrial Automation experience, Have a bunch of Siemens course certifications, experience as a Safety Director, and an Internal ISO Auditor. I plan on leaving in a few more years, I will be fully vested in my 401k in one more, shits a 6% match, wanna make sure to get all that

They program industrial equipment to do pretty much anything in a factory setting. Also electrical or mechanical work can be involved and at times is a bit more physical than the office environment.

what is the typical mechanism for correcting / controlling errors via programming?

Yes, I am an internal ISO Auditor for my Company. I am very familiar with ISO:9001:2008 and am currently working on helping my company transition to the newly released revision of the standard.

I'm not sure what you're asking, controlling for error states is central to how the machine operates. Usually you monitor shitloads of I/O and get creative on how you build the program.

Are you asking about the programming languages or the structure of the code?
>>
>>736661303

Identify what isn't doing what you want it to do.
Figure out why.
Figure what needs to be done to make it do what you want it to do.
Make it do what you want it to do.

...in a nutshell

FBD is a pain if the programmer who made the FBDs did a poor job. I was so happy when I learned how to open and modify fucked up FBs I got from our German Sister company, before i knew how to do that I was basically just stuck with what I was given.

Correcting Errors in a Control System isn't a straight forward thing, its hard to answer his question because there are so many different types of errors and different causes. Controls Engineers that are working to Debug/Commission a system are like Mechatronic detectives. We use Deductive logic to try and resolve a specific issue using different tools, ranging from our Programming Device we use to connect to PLCs to using a Multimeter and a drawing set we drafted to figure why a Contactor isn't coming in when the PLC output to do so is turned on.

Better not lose that job, or you'll join the ranks of us who've been where you are and never had another opportunity like that again. Save your money. You have the rest of your life to waste away.
>>
>>736666597
I believe it 100%. There are a fuckton of OEMs that ship their equipment all fucked up or half done/half assed and are near impossible to get back into the field to fix their shit without getting a Purchase order from your company, while it should be under warranty. I'm experienced enough and understand our systems and PLCs very well, so I don't leave a customer with shit that doesn't preform as desired and is rigid. Trust me though, i know where you are coming from, there are a lot of programmers who are barely even able to use an Excel spreadsheet programming million dollar machines, it blows me away. Keep fighting the good fight brother.

Gay. You will neither make any world-changing discoveries, nor improve the lives of people who need it the most, nor contribute a net reduction in the total amount of suffering in the world. When you die, you will not be remembered for your lifes work.

You are a waste of resources. Get a fucking purpose in life that amounts to something you lazy fuck.

I could drop my job tomorrow and find another that pays more within weeks. Sure I could lose my job, but I'm not going to lose my highly sought after skillset. You can say I got lucky if it makes you feel better. It may be hard for you to believe, but if you set your mind to something, are enthusiastic about it, apply yourself, and maybe make some sacrifices you can build a good foundation that will make scrubs think you only got there by luck.
>>
>>736667707

Literally how retarded do you sound "uh I didn't make anything of myself in because uh...the universe is going to end one day uhh" No shit that's the case for everyone. Wouldn't that be more reason to become something? Like did your parents really fail this bad? You'll realize when you're an actual mature adult how big a deal find a useful purpose is to the significance of not just your life but your well being. If anything's going to give you existential angst, it's that.

eh im fine with where im at in my life

in my late 20s and have had a lot of different jobs, and ive gotten a lot of licenses and certifications along the way too

im making 16/hr in private security right now while im getting myself through nursing school and i really dont care if i make it or not because theres always something else

didnt have wealthy parents and nobody really cared about education in my family so im doing as well as could be expected paying for my own college tuition, bills, and etc.. i mean, if i had parents that would of paid for my college tuition id probably be a lawyer right now
>>
>>736665440
how much do you make per year?

24, automation programmer, no college, 85k a year....in a flyover state. What the fuck is your point OP....go back to soft keying your piece of shit Mitsubishi VFDs.
>>
>>736650741
Nice OP. Congrats on starting out in your new career. I followed a similar path. I worked as an industrial designer in my teens and twenties, & a design engineer in my early thirties. Then after a couple startups, two losses and a win, I now ride on my IP royalties and employ a small gaggle of 54 key innovators in our industry. I take a salary of $1 annually. Some years, that's all I do take.

I just read the rest of this thread. Unless you fix that attitude, the people around you WILL realize it, and no one will work with you, making you a liability.

Should have probably expected the worst of you to begin with, considering the territory. Good luck figuring it out kid.
>>
>>736650741
All hail the glory of OP's will and hard work.

Since that's all it took for him, clearly if shit does not work out for someone, it's because they did not work hard for it, or lacked... will.

OP, consider hanging your ridiculously naive, ideological lunatic ass with barbed wire. ...strung across a highway. Then at least you'd do something worth remembering.
