"Style" is a meme, and trying to focus on it early is cancer. Realism is the underlying skill set that will let you do any other style. All cartooning is just removing and exaggerating elements of realism. Once you get better, you'll discover you already have a style. It's like handwriting.

Do tons of studies, especially of skeletons and bones. You need to learn the basic proportions, and understand how the underlying layers of tissues fit together. This lets you make faces and bodies that are good without having to fiddle with things forever, as you'll understand the underlying shapes you're exaggerating.

Use photo reference whenever possible. Posed cg is much less useful because the lighting and facial expressions are almost always shit, but if you can find a way to pose skeletons it can be helpful. This is less true for cyborgs or robot subjects.

When working in digital and analog, never be afraid to draw big. Use the whole sheet of paper. Work at high resolution and draw lines that are thick to scale. You'll be able to see mistakes more easily, but that means you'll be able to learn from them more easily. You can scale it down later, and it will look better.

Sample your photo references with the eyedropper. Notice where the colors fall. Don't be afraid to use highly contrasting colors when doing skin and in general. >>736489251 is a good example of this. Just fuck with colors in general, and don't bother with trying to perfect any one piece. Doing a bunch of color studies of one shape instead. Try different color combinations constantly, even with markers and colored pens. Notice colors and color combinations in your daily life. Remember what looks good, and remember what doesn't. Try to understand why for each by applying them to your own drawings. You know how they say great artists steal? Do this from real life.

I really do like the way you're pushing down values in these pictures (i'm a sucker for greyscale.), It really sets out more of a darker-themed image. However, I feel that if you used light highlights, it would be more effective as a bold statement for the images.

As for this one, it looks like a screen capture that's redrawn, which is something you ABSOLUTELY DO NOT want to do if you want to acquire a style. To acquire a style, you'll have to experiment with your own content and synthesize it with observations. build your own foundation for building the drawing and work from there.

Get a pink pearl or polymer eraser and one of the eraser shields I pictured. Practice making highlights by erasing out parts to make highlights.

And get real friendly with the heavier B pencils. 4B and up and whatnot.

Highlights aren't too hard once you understand values, and how light affects them. The material an object is made of affects how values look. For instance, a solid matte material will have a large but soft highlight that declines gradually from light to dark, while metallic/shiny objects hold harder, smaller highlights and bolder shadows. As to where the highlight appears largely depends on the light source and the environment itself. from a broad standpoint, highlights appear on the closest surface to the light. if the light hits a surface beyond the form, it is reflected as a part of ambient light.

There is this one thing that I like to do where I take the very edge of a form and apply a subtle light to contrast with any background I may have, and emulate the ambient light.
any other specifics is down to your our depiction of value really. I recommend taking some time to play around with lighting and really get a feel for the dynamics.
