there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with belegarth, amtgard, empire, or any of the similar larping events. But calling them "medieval", and "full contact" is so wrong its laughable. Its a bit like sitting in a 25cc go-cart, and saying you're "Grand Prix Racing". Or being in the park throwing a ball, and saying you're "competing in the NFL".

Its a fantasy LARP. There's nothing wrong with that. It is not "medieval", any more than Lord of the Rings is. Historical reenactment events where equipment is exact to a particular date from the 8th to 15th centuries can call themselves medieval. And its not fighting, its a boffer tag game. Boxing, MMA,HEMA, Krav Maga. Those are fighting martial arts.

Describe it for what it is: A fantasy LARP with padded weapons for safe fighting. And as that, those sort of things are fun - But dont pretend they're anything else.

Why so much hate for calling belegarth full contact?

At Armageddon this weekend i saw two broken wrists and an ankle, I set a minor dislocation for someone, and I personally shield kicked three people off the field. Grappling, shield bashing, and shield kicking is all legal and encouraged.

And to whoever was saying that there is no real skill/tactic involved is clearly not part of a unit.

But then I have to imagine that most of the people bashing this are a bunch of keyboard Warriors who are too busy fapping in front of a computer to ever leave the house to do something active.

The depiction doesn't matter, my point which clearly went over your head (while you were still clearly trying to be an ass) is that a majority of people who were on the battlefield had little to no education in terms of fighting. A majority of the front line was made up of farmers and illiterates who, without access to books or any training, wouldn't know any more than what they had learned by swinging a sword with their fathers or brothers

Despite this, I do understand your Viewpoint and why you have it but I still disagree. I know at least three members of house drggoth in belegarth who have taken Italian longsword classes, I myself have taken Kendo and wushu (not that they carry over at all in belegarth)

And so we are clear I dislocated a finger last year at Armageddon lol

Medieval reenactment group that focuses on 500ad to 1500ad. We do both fighting and arts and sciences of those periods. There are three fighting disciplines recognized.

Heavy- full body protection (think nations) but we use rattan bats(which hurt more than wooden ones ill say from experience) instead of real steal. We swing as hard as things like HEMA and nations, but we don't do things like tackles and kicks.

Rapier/Fencing- real steel fencing, we tend to use more sturdy blades than collegiate fencing which tends to use epees and is based more on street fighting than its sports counter part.

Cut and thrust- a kind of middle man between fencing and heavy. Still use fencing weapons but with heavier armor and more force used.

I'm a heavy fighter myself been doing it for about 5 years. Currently recovering from a broken knuckle from an armor failure a few weeks ago.

One of the local knights (which is the honor you receive for heavy fighting prowess) Is also a Laurel (honor for "noble" or art skills hers is scroll work I believe) a Pelican (honor for assistance skills or more low born skills for her it's cooking) and a white sash (the fencing equivalent to knight)

It is a less focused group but I do love it.

Eh ,depends which bit.

1vs1 bohurts tend to be fairly good for using proper historical technique - it works, after all.

where bohurts are shit for it is messy mass combats - the rules are such that actual techniques aren't advantageous there - so they prefer mass weapons (like those falchions, which are nothing like real ones were) to pummel and to push the opposition onto one knee, which is the win condition.

their combat is a side effect of the rules system. Its not historical, but its highly effective for the system they're playing in.
