I worked at Burger King in the early 2000s and the process of actually cooking the meat was basically already a robot. The grill was a big conveyor belt you just put patties on and they came out the other side perfectly cooked. No flipping, no monitoring. All we had to do was keep an eye on the chain speed and speed it up as the grill got hotter from the grease dripping down into the burner. And that was almost 20 fucking years ago. By now I'm sure the grill monitors its own temperature so you can't fuck it up.

Besides that, the process of making a burger involves stacking things up in the same order every time, microwaving the bottom half exactly the same amount of time every time so the cheese melts, and wrapping the whole thing up in wax paper. Then you put it in a bag and hand it to the wrong customer because you don't give a fuck.

Robots could have done this 10 years ago, they just weren't cheaper than people yet.

I think that as machines continue to get better and smarter it is inevitable that they will replace humans at all sorts of things. That was always the goal. We want to make life easier. What we need to do is recognize that this is GOING TO HAPPEN and change our society accordingly.

I want machines to displace so many workers that the government is forced to recognize that it is just no longer feasible for everyone to be expected to find gainful employment. I want a guaranteed minimum income, or a 20 hour work week. There is no reason for people to be homeless and starving when it's possible to build machines that can crank out homes and food totally unattended.

The transition to a post scarcity society is going to be uncomfortable but you can't just stop it from happening. That has never worked.

If you have a massive amount of people who were living paycheck to paycheck suddenly making double, what are they doing with that extra money? They are spending it, putting it back into the economy. Things that may not have been purchased (Everything from cars, electronics, dining out, etc.) become significantly more commonplace as people have more disposable income; any loss of revenue in labor costs is easily negated by the increased business.

Higher wages = happier employees. Happier employees = better service. Better service = loyal customers. Loyal customers = repeat business and sustainability.

I feel like 20 years ago this would have been a problem. Kids needing jobs and people need xtra cash. But with today's society and how rude and demanding( also demeaning) your average customer is its really not an issue. The only time in my life when I was actually depressed was working food service. The money doesn't cover the stress or shitty environment especially when your bosses get rewards for cutting corners and putting it on you. I got money years later from three separate service jobs I worked that had class action suits against them for making people work off clock. So in this case let the robots have it.
