Acutally, I think it was a good move. After Artie left in January 2010, the show was in a bit of a rut. Howard is always thinking of improving the show, making it better. So that said, joining AGT was the perfect situation as it brought him back into the mainstream, to people's living rooms, and prime time television. He was appealing to a new audience, including younger people. He won a new legion of fans, which in turn attracted Marci, and in turn, more high level celebrity and musician guests. It was a perfect move by the King!

I listened for a while in the late 80's and early 90's. They actually started a entire Rock Radio station in my region just to carry his show in the morning. I guess people in my area weren't big fans. Only lasted a year or two.

Believe me, the show was way more than the edgy material. The best shows were them without guests, just riffing about their personal lives with Gary and John in the studio. Not to mention Gary's love tape segment from 1999, which is perhaps the greatest, and not one mention of sex or scat.

Look at it this way: he's basically retired, but they pay him huge coin to come in a few days a week, mailing it in, with old friends he's worked with for decades.
