Its a CNS depressant, that causes people to relax and reduces anxiety. A lot of people take xanax, or clonazepam. Phenobarb is very similar to those drugs, but can easily cause life threatening respiratory depression if you take too much

Viagra only improves blood flow. It doesn't make you horny, or make you bigger. It still requires stimulation, just makes it easier to get an erection and helps it last longer. It isn't a miracle pill by any means.

Alprazolam (Xanax), Lorazepam (Ativan), Clonazepam (Klonopin), diazepam (Valium) are all benzodiazepines. They are essentially the same drug, just with different durations of action and different methods of elimination from the body.

Barbituates are another class of medications, but because of the way they work in the body (they hold the GABA receptor open on their own) they are much more lethal in an overdose.

The reason barbiturates (like phenobarb) fell out of favor was that the benzodiazepines were just as effective for seizures and anxiety, but were a lot less dangerous

Not really, I would just be guessing.

The biggest thing would probably be patience. Build up your report with the doc. Try the things they want you to try to "fix" the pain. And let them work their way up to long term opioid therapy.

It probably involves MRI/CT scan etc, so hopefully you have insurance.

For adderall, etc... I would go to the DSM4 and look up adult onset ADD. Make sure you claim the diagnostic criteria

sage wisdom, thanks OP. I know I'm probably a scummy (former) drug dealer and addict in your opinion, but I'm genuinely interested in hearing about benzodiazepines' effects over long term use. For example, I've actually suffered two seizures now from withdrawals, whereas I never had them prior to being prescribed benzos. I've been weaning my dosage down for years, but it's never gotten to the point where I can go for long periods of time in potentially stressful situations (going out of town for example) without having some form of benzo every few days.

Benzo's work to reduce seizures by decreasing the "excitatory" aspect of your brain. Thats why they cause drowsiness, tiredness, etc.

If you are on them for a long time, your body begins to compensate by increasing the level of excitatory neurotransmitters- so that way you can continue to function (and not just be asleep all the time).

When you take away the depressant (drug) you are left with far more excitatory chemicals than you are supposed to have. Too much excitation = seizure.

Weaning down slow is the way to go, but the "need" for a benzo during stress is a learned/psychological response. Its just the coping mechanism your body is used too- and the easiest way to take the edge off.

Snorting doesn't do a ton. The drug still has to get absorbed into your body. The reason people snort is 2 fold.

#1- it bypasses the liver (so higher drug concentrations)
#2- it crosses directly into your brain (avoiding the blood-brain barrier)

Otherwise 1mg oral = 1 mg snorted... just a bit slower onset.
